Jeff Sessions' “religious liberty task force” is a white nationalist agenda backed by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)

Founded in 1994 as the Alliance Defense Fund, the ADF is a legal advocacy and organizing coalition for Christian nationalists that has been aggressive in pushing for a decidedly unequal definition of religious liberty. The ADF believes not only that America was founded as a Christian nation, but also that religious conservatives like themselves must save America from moral decline. Sessions and the Trump administration’s ties to the ADF are well-known — in 2017, Sessions consulted the ADF while drafting new DOJ guidance on how to interpret federal religious liberty protections.

The ADF seems particularly focused on limiting the liberty of LGBT Americans, however, in his 2003 book “The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principle Threat to Religious Freedom Today,” former ADF president Alan Sears accused fellow Americans who advocated for marriage equality of a secret agenda to “lead young men and women into homosexual behavior.” In Sears’ conspiracy theory, gay marriage is part of a larger plot to silence conservative Christians.

The idea that LGBT and other minorities groups were threatening the rights of the Christian majority gained traction during the decade when marriage equality was winding its way through the federal courts. Painting themselves as victims of an amoral scheme, Christian nationalists have argued that their religious freedom is slowly but surely being curtailed by gay wedding cakes and transgender bathroom bills.

Like Sessions, apparently, Trump has embraced this narrative wholesale. In his declaration celebrating Religious Freedom Day on January 16, 2018, he wrote that “No American — whether a nun, nurse, baker, or business owner — should be forced to choose between the tenants of faith or adherence to the law.”

In reality, these arguments boil down to one thing: discrimination. It is not enough for Christian nationalists to freely exercise their vision of a good life. In the name of “liberty,” they want the right to discriminate against those with whom they disagree.

Man....what?!?!

Cop out answer. She always supported The Bigot™ and now she has a public "reason" for it.

Never quite understood this argument, even as a clear copout to justify whatever the argument is used for.
When people claim the media is "pushing" them towards supporting an individual or party they claim to not support or even like, they either don't want to admit their actual views for whatever reason or they're idiots who need to be told what their opinion is by the media.

It must be real hard for those adults who can make their own decisions, seeing all those mean tweets and negative articles on Trump. Even though they don't like Trump and don't support him, just seeing those mean articles leaves them with no choice but to support him. What else are they supposed to do? Reflect on their personal views and think for themselves? That'd be ridiculous.

Excerpt (remarks from the press secretary):
“It’s not an order. It’s the president’s opinion,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a news briefing when asked about the president’s Twitter posts.
She denied that Trump was obstructing the probe. “He’s fighting back,” she said. Sessions recused himself from the investigation and his deputy Rod Rosenstein is the person with the authority to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Trump Tells Sessions to ‘Stop This Rigged Witch Hunt Right Now’

Excerpt:
The president’s lawyers, Jay A. Sekulow and Mr. Giuliani, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Trump was not ordering the inquiry closed but simply expressing his opinion.
“It’s not a call to action,” Mr. Giuliani said, adding that it was a sentiment that Mr. Trump and his lawyers had previously expressed publicly and that it was a statement protected by the president’s constitutional right to free speech.
“He doesn’t feel that he has to intervene in the process, nor is he intervening,” Mr. Sekulow said.
The president wanted the legal process to play out, his lawyers said. “He’s expressing his opinion, but he’s not talking of his special powers he has” as president, Mr. Giuliani said.

The WH and Trump's lawyers seem to be pushing back pretty hard that the tweet has nothing to do with obstruction and emphasizing that Trump was simply giving his opinion and not giving an order.
They sound like it must be pretty bad if it Trump was to order the shutting down of the special counsel probe, perhaps by ordering Mueller fired.

Kind of like what Trump has already done. Twice.
On 2 separate occasions he has ordered Mueller's firing to stop the probe. Hannity brushed off the initial NYT report as fake news when it was published but had to eat his words shortly after when Fox News independently confirmed the NYT's reporting that Trump carried out the order to fire Mueller and gave it to the WH counsel.

Here's the report on the first time he ordered Mueller fired, which was in June 2017.

Trump Ordered Mueller Fired, but Backed Off When White House Counsel Threatened to Quit
President Trump ordered the firing last June of Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, according to four people told of the matter, but ultimately backed down after the White House counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the directive.

Excerpt:
After receiving the president’s order to fire Mr. Mueller, the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, refused to ask the Justice Department to dismiss the special counsel, saying he would quit instead, the people said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation.

And here he is the report on Trump's second attempt to fire Mueller, this time in December 2017.

Trump Sought to Fire Mueller in December
In early December, President Trump, furious over news reports about a new round of subpoenas from the office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, told advisers in no uncertain terms that Mr. Mueller’s investigation had to be shut down.

The president’s anger was fueled by reports that the subpoenas were for obtaining information about his business dealings with Deutsche Bank, according to interviews with eight White House officials, people close to the president and others familiar with the episode. To Mr. Trump, the subpoenas suggested that Mr. Mueller had expanded the investigation in a way that crossed the “red line” he had set last year in an interview with The New York Times.

In the hours that followed Mr. Trump’s initial anger over the Deutsche Bank reports, his lawyers and advisers worked quickly to learn about the subpoenas, and ultimately were told by Mr. Mueller’s office that the reports were not accurate, leading the president to back down.
