Illinois governor toasts diversity — with chocolate milk
The governor of one of the most diverse states in the country showed his commitment to cultivating that diversity by drinking a glass of chocolate milk.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) sipped a mouthful of the syrupy drink Wednesday as part of a peculiar demonstration about workplace diversity at a Black History Month event in Chicago.

“It’s really, really good,” he said after taking the sip. “Diversity!”

The demonstration was the idea of Tyronne Stoudemire, Hyatt Hotels’ vice president of global diversity, who is black. He poured Rauner a glass of milk — which he said represented the white men who sit at the helm of most organizations — and then squeezed a dollop of Hershey’s chocolate syrup into the glass. The syrup, which sat at the bottom of the glass, represented how diversity “sits at the bottom of the organization.”

“You don’t get inclusion until you actually stir it up,” Stoudemire said. “I want you to stir it up, Governor, stir it up.”

Rauner used a spoon to blend the syrup and the milk together. He took a sip, and said the union of the two ingredients tasted good.

“Diversity is the mix, and inclusion is making the mix work,” Stoudemire proclaimed.

Stoudemire told the Chicago Tribune’s Kim Janssen that he’d been using the chocolate milk analogy for 16 years to convey the lack of diversity among those who lead Fortune 500 companies. According to Janssen:

[Stoudemire] typically picks on the most powerful person in the room to be his assistant, he said, adding that Rauner “didn’t know what he was getting into.”

He declined to comment on Rauner’s efforts to improve diversity in Illinois government, but said, “I give him credit for his willingness to step up and put himself out there. … He could have said, ‘No.’ ”

Rauner, who is up for reelection, faces state Rep. Jeanne Ives in the Republican primary March 20. Ives’s own take on diversity was attacked this month after she aired an ad deemed “racist, sexist and homophobic,” in part for its insensitive depiction of a transgender woman by a deep-voiced actor, the Tribune reported.

A spokeswoman for Rauner, Rachel Bold, said in a statement that Rauner’s demonstration Wednesday was “the event moderator’s example of diversity that an audience of all ages could see and understand.”

“It was one of two demonstrations at the event, both of which received ovations from the crowd,” she said.

Top Republicans on Capitol Hill have made a concerted decision in their Russia inquiries: They are staying away from digging into the finances of President Donald Trump and his family.

Six Republican leaders of key committees told CNN they see little reason to pursue those lines of inquiry or made no commitments to do so -- even as Democrats say determining whether there was a financial link between Trump, his family, his business and Russians is essential to understanding whether there was any collusion in the 2016 elections

How many deferments this dude got again?

There is Howard Stern audio of him saying he once turned away from a bleeding man in disgust at Mar-a-Lago

“I was at Mar-a-Lago and we had this incredible ball, the Red Cross Ball, in Palm Beach, Florida. And we had the Marines. And the Marines were there, and it was terrible because all these rich people, they’re there to support the Marines, but they’re really there to get their picture in the Palm Beach Post… so you have all these really rich people, and a man, about 80 years old—very wealthy man, a lot of people didn’t like him—he fell off the stage,” said Trump.

Trump proceeds to explain that it was a $100,000-per-table fundraiser filled with deep-pocketed billionaires, and that the Marines were—for whatever reason—given tables in the very back of the ballroom (“the worst table in the whole place”). Oh, and that he was more preoccupied with his ballroom’s pristine marble floor than the octogenarian bleeding out on it.

“So what happens is, this guy falls off right on his face, hits his head, and I thought he died. And you know what I did? I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s disgusting,’ and I turned away,” said Trump. “I couldn’t, you know, he was right in front of me and I turned away. I didn’t want to touch him… he’s bleeding all over the place, I felt terrible. You know, beautiful marble floor, didn’t look like it. It changed color. Became very red. And you have this poor guy, 80 years old, laying on the floor unconscious, and all the rich people are turning away. ‘Oh my God! This is terrible! This is disgusting!’ and you know, they’re turning away. Nobody wants to help the guy. His wife is screaming—she’s sitting right next to him, and she’s screaming.”

Thank God for the Marines. “What happens is, these 10 Marines from the back of the room… they come running forward, they grab him, they put the blood all over the place—it’s all over their uniforms—they’re taking it, they’re swiping [it], they ran him out, they created a stretcher. They call it a human stretcher, where they put their arms out with, like, five guys on each side,” shared Trump.

“I was saying, ‘Get that blood cleaned up! It’s disgusting!’ The next day, I forgot to call [the man] to say he’s OK,” said Trump, adding of the blood, “It’s just not my thing.”

I know this is wishful thinking but let’s say we got rid of lobbying and placed some sort of cap on money in politics. Would there be any unexpected bad outcomes. Or would this be a key step towards having a democracy that actually serves the majority?

We would have a real democracy if we abolished Lobbying. We should take money out of the media and politics and this country would be immensely better.

Unless there’s a negative consequence I’m not accounting for, I think this whole Parkland thing should spur another discussion that uses the NRA as the poster child for why lobbying should be abolished. Imo it should become a major part of what we push for to make steps toward a more functional government. In a world where folks are getting richer at an alarming rate, and technology will be used as a means to exploit us if there’s no pushback, this is as important as civil rights and healthcare imo.

Take the money out and these greedy slimeballs we have in office will stick to the financial sectors they belong to, paving the road for real public servants.
