***Official Political Discussion Thread***

the problem with the shooting and subsequent protests is the lack of actual direction. People are calling for assault rifle bans and "gun control" etc etc. NRA and their supporters both high and low... are easily countering with you have no idea what ur talking about and so...denied.

Media is a circus turning every kid from the school into a celebrity for 15 minutes and also spreading misinformation. The misinformation is why no changes will get passed. Asking to ban "assault rifles" misses the mark because theyre already banned. So people dont know what theyre actually asking/protesting for. The media has people believing that semi-automatic is some ultra death machine classification, not understanding the handguns theyre suggesting people use instead....are also semi-automatic.

You can't possibly think you can tell congress to change a law and you dont even have the specifics down. Its a losing battle until people actually become informed. If you're going to wage war on the 2nd amendment, be prepared. You cant go to war without knowing who or what you're fighting against. right now its just a bunch of knee jerk reactions, buzz words, and pointless marches.

I agree that we need a strategy and we need to organize to be able to match the propaganda machine of the NRA (of course, nra/trump will cry conspiracy the minute anti-nra forces show some organization).

without jumping to bans on specific guns or other specific policy, we should first advocate for federally-funded research into gun violence -- as a public health issue -- and empower a committee to use the findings of such research to implement policy changes on the federal level.

Everyone dumps on millennials (present company included), but they aren't falling for a lot of the dumb **** that has plagued this society for years. They see and understand the tactics being used and they just aren't buying. It's great to see.
it's rather sad that the generation before them (ages 25-45, whatever the hell they're called) are the ones who are idiots, easily conned by conspiracy theories, etc.

there's some hope if this newer generation is better at seeing bs and understanding how easy it is to manipulate information on the internet.

Agreed, I'm in that generation and you gotta remember the internet was just starting out too. So it allowed a lot of it to breed because it was all still new and it was sort of "underground". I'm not gonna say there aren't conspiracies in the world, but the "everything is a conspiracy" crowd is a joke. It's great to see the kids standing up to the nonsense.

they know when this second half of the generation turns 18 a lot of them wont make the cut. however, in the meantime... they need to come up with real solutions. saying "common sense" reform and things like that wont get it done, as the florida legislators showed yesterday when it denied them to their faces. theyre treating it like its a disney channel original movie and that as long as they believe.... theyll overcome longstanding systemic evils.

Dude you sound like a fool. :lol

I turned 18 in 2003 right before Obama’s first term, things were gravy back then....

Kids got comfy to the point of complacency I guess

Comfy? We graduated and dealt with the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Most of us have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of lost income over the course of our lives.

The younger kids then. People old enough to struggle were struggling. Were you as worried about politics back in 2008? I was trying to stay above water. Also I graduated late :lol

Teacher here. I talked to several other teacher today after a LONG day where a Student listed 30 names of students and faculty he wanted to shot in school on social media. He was arrested which lead a staff meeting about this. This is a SERIOUS! consideration in the state and no one in the building was feeling this idea.

Lulz @ special training...they should entertain this idea for a second and ask the GOP to fund these programs and guns for teachers....clowns don’t even want to allow teachers to claim school supplies as expenses on their taxes....despicable
