Not true when you look at historical precedents.
Da slide to da more extreme right is a recent thing.
The best thing for the Republican party to do is to move back from the right on the social issues and cast away all the right-wing tea party extremists. The social and fiscal principles of the Republican Party have really been taken over by a bunch of right wing nuts who champion things that really have nothing to do with politics or effective government. Unfortunately, these extremist right wing nuts are an easy, easy vote so it doesn't make much sense for the GOP not to pander to their craziness.
How many seats have the GOP already essentially forfeited in Congress by putting up some extremist joke of a candidate? They need to scale it back and push these guys out of their party and not let them run as Republicans.
