***Official Political Discussion Thread***

Yeah that part threw me too. Watching the video it seemed to me more like $200 was one of the fees for filing some of the paperwork. Just going in with the idea she was promulgating that they "did all the right things and didn't skip the line".
Between the paperwork and the visa to come in, you're looking at 4 figures.

If you're trying to stay, you're looking at five figures, including immigration lawyer fees (and you most likely need one).

Then, there's the application itself, which asks you to verify that either you make enough to support yourself in this country without work, or that the person that is sponsoring your stay makes multiple times the minimum wage. You can't sponsor someone to immigrate to the US if you're on social assistance.
But the overall point she's trying to get across is just deeply ludicrous because the wealthy in this country - all they know how to do is skip the line. Waiting in line is for suckers, and nearly every place in this country there are systems whether visible or invisible, for those with wealth and resources and connections to skip the lines, and it's the poor and the nonwhite folks and those without friends in high places that actually have to go through the lines.
Here's a fun fact: rich foreigners use investment loopholes to skip the residency line.

Drop between $500k and $1 million on a "business" that employs a minimum number of Americans (like cousins with US citizenship), et voila! They get a green card too.

But in all EB-5 projects, most of them legit, the investors get a green card assuring permanent U.S. residency (on the way to formal citizenship) for themselves and all family members under age 21 in exchange for a $1 million dollar investment, so long as the money creates 10 U.S. jobs. There’s an added sweetener for areas that badly need jobs. If the jobs are created in a rural area, or in a U.S. city “targeted employment area” with an unemployment rate 1.5 times the national unemployment average, then the visa price is cut in half: just $500,000 to create 10 jobs gets you a ticket to U.S. citizenship.

Honestly, I tend to avoid reading too much into individual moves like this in the house.

But Bouie is not exactly LeninGrirtty1917420 here.

At best, this looks terrible for Dems, especially in the eyes of the most gettable Trump 24 voters.

AOC is nonstarter for a lot of independents not just Trumpers. There will be other positions for her. I would argue her impact is already outsized.....

Video does a good job of hating on the pic, but doesn't really illustrate why picking AOC would be better outside of her age?

Because it signals that Democrats are happy with the status quo overall.

The messaging should be “hey median voter, you clearly want change. Here’s our alternative to rightwing, techno fascism.”

Edit:

And best of all, AOC would be getting to go negative against Musk’s corruption every day. So the more polarizing things that she’s known for would be in the background.

people don't like uncontrolled immigration,
no amount of appeals to populism is going to change this.
Is immigration in the US uncontrolled, or is it made to look uncontrolled?

This is one of those issues where perception doesn't match the reality on the ground. You still don't get a green card with your bachelor's degree in the US.

Anarchist say a lot of dumb **** but they were cooking when they said the Earth already has “open borders,” if you’re wealthy enough.

A ton of people have very strong opinions about migration at the southern border, yet have little understand of the issues facing the immigration and asylum system. Not speaking about folk in here, just generally.

Simply put, the southern border has very low capacity to handle refugees and migrants. Any sustain rise in people crossing overwhelms the system. Biden moves, no matter if I support them on principle, incentivized more people trying to cross.

If he wanted to do this, then the American Rescue Plan should have had like 100 billion in it to build up capacity. More agents, more judges, and more facilities to temporarily house people. Unfortunately, it would have been progressives House members and special interest groups, that would have been outraged over this and demanded it be removed.

I think it is time for Democrats to finally acknowledge that Obama was more right about the southern border than the special interest groups that tried to paint him as out of touch and a monster.

Putting political maneuvering aside he understood that the current system just cannot process a lot of people efficiently. So numbers need to be kept down. Considering politics, he took a major wedge issue for the GOP off the board.

By listening to the wrong people the Democrats just hand the GOP a political win. The GOP want chaos at the border. The Dems should want order.

If you want to allow a lot of people to claim refuge status at the border, and let in as many people with legitimate claims as possible in, then be supportive of the tens of billions it will take to build up capacity.

The GOP now knows they can turn not only white people, but enough black, Latino, and Asian people against the Dems using this issue.

The Dems don't have to be Bill Clinton cruel, dog whistling racist, and incompetent to be better on the southern border.

They just have to be realist.

1. yes the abuse of asylum is uncontrolled immigration.

2. and yes the optics also matter.

people don't like it for rational and irrational reasons
no amount of "well actually its the evil corporations that are using the resources " is going to make this not true.

people want both justice and order. but they will trade justice for order if pushed.

Canada went from one of the most pro immigrant countries, to super anti immigrant.
because the process started to look chaotic

im very pro immigration, but everyone who is pro immigration needs to be real about this.
you have to do everything possible to signal to the public that it is orderly and fair.

I know that optics matter.

That's why those who want to paint the image of a crisis at the border ignore the data resulting from Biden's policies.

The perception of the crisis at the border doesn't match the fact that Biden worked with Central American countries and USCIS to significantly reduce the number of illegal entries, without turning this issue into a spectacle of inhumanity.

there was an abuse of the asylum process that led to a surge in immigration and then GOP governors turned up the heat politically by shipping them to blue cities.

again we gotta be real, people don't like it,

yes your political enemies will exaggerate the problem for political gain.
but the problem isn't just entirely fake.

given that the latest school shooting is seemingly out of the news already…

It’s not hard to see how worked up people got over the single death of a CEO
