Whatever you may think of this ban in the context of national security, it’s political harm cannot be ignored.
Proponents of the ban think that young people disliked the ban because they were losing a source of frivolous and ephemeral entertainment. That’s part of it but that alone isn’t moving the needle for voters, especially younger voters.
What does move the needle is the impact on creators. And people need to stop acting like it’s 2014. This is a real sector and one that has allowed people who either cannot or will not do 9-5s, the ability to make a living.
Joe Biden opted to take that away and in the eyes of someone who escaped the rat race and now does far less alienated labor, I can understand that being a deal breaker politically.
“This man hasn’t made an interest payment since the late 70’s, he pays his lawyers in sports memorabilia, he’s willing to risk his life rather than pay hard currency to book an indoor venue; but yes, I think that this man simply wants to help me get a girlfriend.”
Good thinking there, Kaydyn.

Is this not the same argument that those who voted for Trump make? Sure, he may have sold off US secrets to the highest bidder, but he promised the price of and would be low!
If the information scrapped by Tiktok on its users and those around them (see ghost/shadow FB profiles) was useless, I could agree with you. The problem is that the openness of the western cyberspace is being used to wage war against their institutions, to sow division, and to increase misinformation. The information gathered on social media platforms facilitates the aforementioned goals.
There's an alternative to Tiktok going down, and Americans with a vested interest in Tiktok's availability in the country could and should lobby the company to separate its operations from the Chinese government.
eh someone will just buy it. problem solved.
Trump doesn't have the power to get rid of the law, but his TikTok investor donors don't want to see their investments reduced to zero so someone will def buy it.
