[BR]crazy hearing about dave brubeck passing man. i remember last semester in music theory our teacher played one of his songs and asked us to guess the time signature, od difficult. we just performed 'take five' a couple of months ago in our jazz choir, it was like a pre-tribute or something. r.i.p brubeck you music lives on.
song we had to guess above

Ah, Work Song... haven't listened to that in a bit... played that in high school too!

I've also posted some Eliane Elias and Stacy Kent vids a while back... definitely a couple of my fav lady-singers...

Continuing with the Brubeck cuts...

Vince Guaraldi- Christmastime Is Here (vocal & instrumental)

My favorite Christmas songs of all time...Happy Holidays everyone....

Cambridge Choir And Orchestra Of Clare College

What the heck, I know this isn't jazz, but aside from the 2 up there, this is my other favorite Christmas song of all time. Not religious, but love the beauty of this song...

Do you live in Bmore DT43? Maan, ratbird fans are hot & upset about losing at home...You should hear them on 105.7 this morning, I had to turn it off. Couldn't start my Monday morning out with so much negativity...Good post up there. Love Coltrane...You earning a lot of reps with me...Keep it up...

I posted some young cats a couple of pages ago but I thought I'd share more with my NT jazz brethren...Hope you enjoy...

Gilad Hekselman - Prelude To a Kiss
I live like 10min outside the city (in the burbs).. and yeah the callers on 105.7 are one of a kind :lol

By the way, you know of any dope record stores in the area? (Whether well-known or lesser known)

RIP Dave, this was a really cool moment:

DT43 -
As far as record stores it begins & ends with Sound Garden in Fells Point. It's actually considered one of the top 25 record stores in the country (been mentioned in Rolling Stone several times throughout the years). This is the best place to go in town really. It makes for a nice Saturday or Sunday visit (or week day if you're a student or work non 9-5 hours). When I make treks there, I'll have lunch at the Nanami Cafe (Japanese place) on South Ann St, right on the water...

Then you got Record & Tape Traders in Towson, CD Depot in Loch Raven, & Vine St Records in Hamden. If you want vinyl, you also have Trax on Wax in Catonsville. There's also a place called An Die Musik in Mt. Vernon but they specialize in classical, opera, & jazz only. They have an extensive jazz section with a lot of stuff. The owners are good peoples...

Sinner P - you mentioned playing in a band in high school. What instrument do you play? Do you still play?

I can't believe I forgot to mention El Suprimo in Fells Point. This is another place to go for vinyl. Also, should not have forgotten Dimensions In Music (or DM) in the city (not far from Lexington Market). I shouldn't have forgotten to mention this because judging by your musical posts, you'd love this place. It specializes in jazz, hip-hop, r&b, reggae, etc...It's black owned & operated. The owner, Larry Jeter is extremely good peoples. I haven't been there in a minute because it's the furthest from me but this place is a treasure trove. I'd actually put it as #2 in the Bmore area specifically for the jazz, hip-hop, r&b, & reggae...Once Larry gets to know you, that place is like Cheers. Parking is a real b***h though. Once your done there, I'd get something to eat at Lexington Market. If you do & like steak subs, go to Andy's which has been there for years. If you like chicken, I forget the name of the place there, but get you a Bmore tradition...A chicken box with a half & half...Make sure to add some ketchup & hot sauce... :lol

Sinner P - you mentioned playing in a band in high school. What instrument do you play? Do you still play?
Yes sir... I played the alto-sax.  Started in middle-school and through high school.  But that was about it though... haven't touched the sax in years.

Anyway... more from my fav. Christmas album.

Ellis Marsalis - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Too bad you didn't continue playing, but at least it exposed you to new music right? Cool ish....Here's another Christmas CD I just pulled out. The Marsalis patriarch. His A New Orleans Christmas Carol album is really nice. I couldn't find other songs from the album on YouTube. This was the only one...

If anyone is interested, here is the link to Amazon to preview the tracks.

^ Yeah, I knew I wanted to learn the sax going into middle-school, but wasn't really into jazz at the time. Through middle-school, it was all the typical school-band stuff... no jazz. The interest in jazz really began in high school when we started playing more advanced stuff and actually had a proper jazz-band. A few of my other band-mates even decided to form a small jazz-combo quintet. Played stuff like Chameleon, Watermelon Man and other random funk/jazz/blues-type stuff.  Used the blues-scales a lot cuz it was easy and it sounded good...

Didn't continue in college cuz I didn't have the time and, frankly, wasn't good enough.  Oh well... those gigs in high-school were fun, no doubt.

Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin'

JJ Johnson - Stir Fry

Neal Smith Quintet - The Cup Bearers

Some more young cats with Dezron Douglas on bass...

Esperanza Spalding - What A Wonderful World (Oscar In Memoriam performance Feb 2012 with the Southern California Children's Chorus)

When I watched the awards earlier this year, I was actually very moved by her performance. I think this stands on par with Armstrong's version.

Lee Morgan - Cornbread

I could go for a big bowl of chili & some cornbread... :smokin

Ronnie Foster - Mystic Brew

Please tell me you can guess what group sampled this for their song...

And more Oscar, of course!

A writer for Vulture, the hip section of New York Magazine rewrote the theme song for Showtime's Homeland theme song. In case their player doesn't embed, the link is provided below. The song was very amusing...

http://www.vulture.com/2012/12/vulture-wrote-a-better-homeland-theme-song.html

One of the early defining elements of Homeland was its lead's affinity for jazz music. Does jazz emulate Carrie's freeform, occasionally erratic mental energies? Does it score her lust for Brody? Or is it just a cool element of an otherwise tense drama series, daddy-o? Whatever the reason, Homeland emerged as one the jazziest shows on television. And yet, this season — with the exception of an unfortunate jazz incident that went down after Carrie fiddled with her car stereo — has been less jazzy. Why has the series de-jazzed itself? Is it a coincidence that this sub-jazzed arc has been more grumbled about, critically? Maybe all the complaining about the hard-to-swallow plot arcs is misplaced, and the real issue is that it needs to be re-jazz-ified? In this video, Vulture's Julie Klausner talks to a jazz singer, Marianne Solivan, about these pressing, jazz-related issues and then, with the help of some students from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, offers a new, jazzy-riffic theme song for the producers to consider swapping in under the credits. You can even sing along!

Yeah, forgot to comment on that in the Homeland thread, but I thought it was an LOL-horrible...
