OFFICIAL HOCKEY THREAD: NHL, KHL, NCAA, IIHL

Right, thats how I have always understood it. Then I see people on social media posting a rule where as long as they are out of the play and within 5 feet of the bench it isnt considered too many men. So having watched hockey for 30+ years... I guess I dont have any idea.

Now looking at it again, the players have to be within 5 feet?

I dont know. It seems like a rule thats called at the discretion of the referee at this point.

Edit:

From the NHL Hockey Ops:

A too many men on the ice penalty is a judgement call that can be made by any of the four on-ice officials.

Following the game, Hockey Operations met with the four officials as is their normal protocol. In discussing the winning goal, each of the four officials advised that they did not see a too many men on the ice situation on the play.

This call is not subject to video review either by Hockey Ops or the on-ice officials.

I did not know about that "within 5 feet of the bench" part until last night. I always thought if they realized they had an extra guy and didnt ay the puck til the guy left it was ok, keep the play going. Similar to a hand pass, letting the opponent play it.

I saw another angle that showed kadri had gone on the ice and had the puck well before mackinnon left the ice. I dunno, if its a discretion of the ref type call its a pretty wack way to end a game.

It’s totally a judgement call and depends on possession. Need to see the video again v a screen grab to see how it went down

Yeah the 5 feet thing I figure is like an unofficial thing, because you’re not gonna call it if it’s obvious two guys are swapping in and out and not affecting the game. Purely subjective though I’m sure some refs prob give more leeway some less.

Edit: this ain’t relay swimming lol doesn’t have to be timed exact

I just watched the replay again a few times these dudes need to not take their sweet time getting to the bench lol

I dunno if it was so much mackinnon taking his sweet time getting to the bench as it was kadri jumping the gun and going on the ice too fast

Prob Kadri lol he was at least at center ice when Mack got anywhere near the bench but in general these dudes casually glide to the bench on changes

So they win Game 4 on a missed too many men on the ice call, and they tie up in G5 after a questionable icing call....

Oof.

Val just skated into Sergachev thinking he was gonna make a first move and Val could skate right through, nope lol

Need this to go 7. I love baseball, but if we can drag this out a few more days before baseball becomes the only show in town for a few months, I’m all for it.

That being said. I think Colorado bounces back and finishes this Sunday. But if they don’t, Tampa having the goalie advantage in a do or die game 7 would be huge.

Congrats Avs. Denver’s Year In Review:

Hockey - Win the Cup
Basketball - Jokic wins NBA MVP
Football - Russell Wilson traded to Broncos
