It started before that though. He was competing for the gold medal against a brazilian. On his final vault, which if he made it, would likely have given him gold, the crowd was booing him. He gave a thumbs down to the camera before he attempted, and looked upset. Then he missed the attempt, and the brazilian won the gold. Afterwards, he gave this quote:

"In 1936 the crowd was against Jesse Owens," he said of the black American sprinter whose four gold medals in Berlin were an affront to the Nazi ideology of racial superiority.

"We've not see this since. We have to deal with it."

Today, they booed him on the podium.
