SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants and Marlins have been in talks about a deal that would bring infielder Jorge Cantu down the hall from the visitors’ clubhouse to the home clubhouse during the four-game series between the clubs that wraps up Thursday afternoon.

CSNBayArea.com has learned from a big-league source, however, that reports that the swap could go down before Wednesday’s 4:05 p.m. PT first pitch are premature.http://

In fact, the deal is far from a slam-dunk. Cantu, 28, will be a free agent at the end of the season and has indicated that he’d like to re-sign with the Marlins this winter whether he’s traded or not, and Giants general manager Brian Sabean has repeatedly said he’s not interested in acquiring a rent-a-player.

That thinking could change, said the source, if Cantu can be added under low-cost circumstances.

The Marlins, who are paying Cantu $6 million this season, are said to be willing to accept a prospects-only package, but there’s been some disagreement within the Giants’ front office as to whether parting with any young talent of note is worth two-plus months of a career .279 hitter.

Last week, Giants VP of baseball operations Bobby Evans confirmed to CSNBayArea.com that the club has spoken to virtually every team in the Majors in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline in search of relief help and/or an additional bat.

San Francisco most recently has been linked to the Royals, with discussions of varying intensity about acquiring outfielders David DeJesus (since ruled out for the year with a thumb injury), Jose Guillen and Scott Podsednik.

They’ve also had conversations with the Nationals about Adam Dunn, but Washington’s desire to get Madison Bumgarner in the deal effectively shut talks down. Talks with the Brewers about Corey Hart and Prince Fielder were similarly stunted.

Batting .260 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs through Tuesday, Cantu has seen time in the big leagues at every infield position but is primarily a third baseman for Florida. He’s appeared in 79 games at the hot corner and 40 at first base this season.

In other deadline rumblings, CSNBayArea recently learned that the Giants, who have an exclusively right-handed bullpen with lefties Jeremy Affeldt (side strain) and Dan Runzler (dislocated kneecap) on the disabled list, are prioritizing relief help in their pre-trade-deadline discussions but aren’t necessarily stuck on adding a southpaw for the bullpen.

In other words, they’re not going to pass on a reliable arm simply because it’s a right arm.

Recently acquired former NL Rookie of the Year Dontrelle Willis, 2007 10th-round draft pick Joe Paterson and Alex Hinshaw are among the internal left-handed options.

Add the Giants to the teams pursuing Blue Jays lefty Scott Downs, based on this tweet from SI's Jon Heyman.  From the right side, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote last night that they are "investigating" Seattle's Brandon League.

Downs has drawn attention from the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Reds, Twins, Dodgers, Rockies, and Phillies this month, but the asking price is huge at the moment.  It's been quieter on the League front, though the Tigers are known to be keeping tabs on him.  League holds the added appeal of being under team control through 2012.

That rumor about Cantu reminds me of how Freddy Sanchez was traded to us before a game against Pittsburgh last year. Then when Winn hit the walk off base hit I wondered if Sanchez was gonna run onto the field from the visitors' dugout to celebrate with the Giants
