**Official 2010 NY knicks pre-season thread** 10/6 vs T-wolves (PARIS) 2PM MSG/NBA TV

Feltons deal has a team option on the year where the 2 best pgs in the league will be free agents. Donnie is a beast of a GM and I believe he's going to maintain cap flexibility until he puts his own big 3 together.
I wasn't saying the signing of Felton was bad, it definitely wasn't. But my point was, if they start signing mid-level guys to deals, it's going to start affecting their flexibility in the future. Walsh and co. can't be giving guys 2-3 year deals for the next couple years if they really want to get Chris Paul.

Suffering may have been a stretch, but there isn't no way New York stays in the hunt for a top playoff seed (1-4) AND stay in contention for Chris Paul in two years.

Miami, Boston, Chicago, Orlando.

They won't be topping any of those teams with JUST Carmelo, Amare, and Raymond Felton, especially if they're going to be keeping guys for a year, renting them out, in hopes of getting someone better in two years (Chris Paul). With the core they'd have if they traded for Carmelo, until they get extra help, they'd be in the same group as Milwaukee and Altanta, second-tier. If yall end up wtih Carmelo, things will be very thin for yall. Don't give me nothing about Andy Rautins, Bill Walker, or Wilson Chandler,

. They need depth, but that requires money, and that's something New York needs to watch CAREFULLY if they want to stay in the sweepstakes for Chris Paul.

Getting Amar'e is a great piece. You need that cornerstone guy now. Carmelo is that guy. If they get him, more credit to him, but the real job will be done if he can get Chris Paul. I'm not willing to call anyone a beast of a GM yet. If you're that bad for so long, you're eventually going to accumulate great pieces. Be bad for so long, you compile lots of good prospects (Danilo, AR [acquired from a 20/10 guy]), and you get very nice cap relief. It's the reward of being on the bottom for so long. If he can construct this team, stay in the middle of the pack of the East, then go all-out in 2012, THEN I'll say he's a beast.

He still has a lot to work to do, Amar'e isn't the end of the road, and quite frankly, neither is Carmelo.
Knicks in the mix for Rudy Fernandez
Chris Sheridan

MADRID, Spain - I mentioned this in my report yesterday on the feud/pending divorce between Rudy Fernandez and the Portland Trail Blazers, but it belongs in the lead paragraph for this site: The Knicks are among the teams trying to acquire the Spanish shooting guard, and they have offered Wilson Chandler.

Other offers on the table include the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls each offering a No. 1 draft pick in 2011, a league source told ESPN.com.

But after the Blazers turned down several offers of first-round picks in the teens on draft night when the team was still being run by former general manager Kevin Pritchard, they are looking to see if they can get a similar offer from a team they believe will finish in the middle of the pack next season.

Chandler has had an eventful offseason, but his brush with the law is not something that is scaring the Blazers from taking him in a trade. New Portland general manager Rich Cho is simply trying to scour the league for the best offer he can find, and something more appealing than Chandler or a pick that'll probably fall in the mid-20s could become available between now and the start of training camp.

Since the Knicks did not have a first-round pick in 2010, they are prohibited under league rules from offering their 2011 pick (because teams are not allowed to go consecutive years without having a No. 1 pick, something known as the Ted Stepian rule).

The Houston Rockets own the rights to the Knicks' 2012 pick from last February's Jared Jeffries trade, and they also have the right to swap first-round picks with New York next June. That means if Knicks president Donnie Walsh wants to offer Portland a No. 1 pick, it would have to be a pick in 2014 or later.

One possibility for the Knicks would be to trade Chandler to a third team for a No. 1 pick in 2012, and then ship that pick to Portland for Fernandez.

Tony Parker wouldn't be a max contract. a core of melo, amare, and parker with 4-6 million after would be great. i'm not all that into the 3 superstar thing. plus it could be done this off season

It's safe to say that no matter what official role Thomas has with the team, he'll always be in the news for advising the boss.
 • ESPN 1050 has reported that the Knicks have a trade offer in mind to get Anthony. But one side who's not talking is -- you guessed it -- the Nuggets.
 • After actress Eva Longoria said her husband, Spurs point guard Tony Parker, wants to play for the Knicks, ESPN NBA Insider Ric Bucher provided an un-Hollywood-like analysis (no fluff, the real deal): "The problem is that if he is going to go now, [the Spurs] would have to trade him and New York does not have anything that San Antonio wants. So if Tony wants to go to New York in particular, then he's going to have to wait until he is a free agent."
 • Blazers shooting guard Rudy Fernandez is feeling very moody about his future with the team. He will not report to training camp and has no intention of playing out the remaining two years of his contract. Which is all the merrier for the Knicks who, along with the Bulls, have high interest in courting him.
 • This weekend, Spike Lee and John Starks will celebrate the return of Golden Hoops after a 15-year hiatus. The prestigious youth basketball tournament was created by the New York Daily News in the 80s and 90s. On Saturday, 40 boys and 20 girls, representing the nation's best in high school hoops, will compete in a one-day affair in Brooklyn. Other special guests include: Kenny Smith (host), Kenny Anderson (honorary coach of the NYC team), Brevin Knight (honorary coach of the Jersey team), John Wallace (honorary coach of the Empire team) and Evan Turner (honorary coach of the Philly team). With the Boost Mobile Elite 24 moving to Venice Beach this month (for four straight years, it was held at Rucker Park), NYC can still boast a rich playground event for high schoolers.
 • One final note: Amar'e Stoudemire is planning to rest on the Sabbath.

I'm Adventist so I know what the Sabbath is. I don't know how extensive he is going to take this but does this mean dude won't be playing Friday nights?

As the outsider/hated one here. Yes, Amar'e would be out Friday nights and Saturday afternoon games if this is true (which I would not hold my breathe on)

He would also be out on certain holidays in the Jewish religion as well but again, I think it will not happen

Hope that clears somethings from your favorite Swamprat.

He said he'll keep the Sabbath and all Jewish holidays, except on days he has games. I'm Jewish myself so props to him for keeping the Sabbath on some days, because honestly its pretty hard to imo.
