The bottom line is, Chandler fired his agent. And this is a tough loss for Luchey, who had to accept Donnie Walsh's decision to not offer Chandler a contract extension in the fall. Walsh wanted to maintain salary cap flexibility, though he has consistently said he planned to sign Chandler in the summer. Walsh may not get that opportunity, however, if he includes Chandler in a trade for Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks want to keep Chandler, who is a favorite of the coaching staff for his coachability and very quiet, hardworking demeanor (not to mention his steadily improving talent), and his status as a restricted free agent might actually be what keeps him in New York. The Nuggets like Chandler as a talent, but there is concerned about what they'd have to pay him as a restricted free agent. Luchey was looking for money similar to the five-year, $60 million deal Danny Granger signed with the Pacers in 2008.

Now if Chandler gets that kind of money, Luchey won't see a dime of the new contract, which will be negotiated by whomever represents Chandler next. That's part of the risk agents take with players, who have the right to fire their agent at any time. And that's also why a big part of this business is stealing clients, especially ones who are on the verge of a big payday and have a relatively small-time agent who, so far, hasn't gotten a deal done.

By rule he can't sign with another agent for two weeks, but you don't normally fire someone until you know who you want to hire as the replacement. According to the Daily News, Chandler is believed to be choosing from Carmelo's agent, Leon Rose, Dan Fegan, Arn Tellem, Andy Miller or even Amar'e Stoudemire's rep, Happy Walters. Note that every single one is a heavy hitter. It'll be interesting to see who emerges as his new agent and how that may play into trade talks with the Nuggets.

Luchey, who also represents Golden State rookie Ekpe Udoh, came under fire early this season when a report by Yahoo! Sports alleged that Luchey worked in cahoots with Knicks scout Rodney Heard to arrange for Chandler to work out exclusively for the Knicks. Chandler, the report said, worked out for a week under Heard's watch. Chandler did not work out with any other team in the pre-draft process, which he said was due to an ankle injury.

The Knicks drafted Chandler 23rd overall, which came as a surprise to many at the time. But by his third season, Chandler proved to be not only a keeper, but a promising young player who has emerged as one of the best from the 2007 draft class. He is averaging 17.4 points per game this season, which is second to only Kevin Durant (28.4) among '07 draftees and his career average of 14.1 points per game is tied for second among the '07 draftees with Jeff Green

Lineup Change

From today's practice at the AT&T Center, Amar'e Stoudemire called tomorrow's game against the Spurs "a must-win for us" because he said, "we're looking to break this losing streak. It would be a great, great win if we can get this tomorrow night." For the record, the Knicks haven't won in San Antonio since March 18, 2003, a span of seven straight games. . . . Mike D'Antoni spent the practice re-emphasizing the pick-and-roll, which has disappeared from the offense over the last four games. "It's been a long time since we've really had some great exchanges," D'Antoni said. "We tried to establish that today and get back to it a little bit. When we're really good, we have that kind of going first and everything plays off of it." . . . D'Antoni said he might change the starting lineup but would not commit to anything, therefore he would not elaborate on who he would send to the bench between Danilo Gallinari or Chandler if he decided to start Ronny Turiaf at center.

Since we need a backup PG, why does coach play Felton and Douglas together ?

When Douglas is in the game... Felton should be resting..

Douglas shouldn't play SG, let him be a scoring PG off the bench.

you can put Walker / Williams / even Rautins / Gallo / Chandler at the position...

you guys will be pleased to know that Wilson is going to the bench and Turiaf is starting even though Wilson has arguably been our third best player this year.

Even in slump, Knicks have it half right

THE RECORD

STAFF WRITER

In July, the Knicks would’ve taken 22-19 at this season’s midpoint, coach Mike D’Antoni admits.

Two weeks ago — just before his team embarked on a stretch of five losses in six games, including the last four in a row entering tonight’s game against the Spurs — nope.

Now, as they christen the second half of their resurrection season, the possibility of Carmelo Anthony playing with Amar’e Stoudemire by the Feb. 24 trade deadline looms larger than ever with the Nets dropping out.

Even if they don’t get him, look for team president Donnie Walsh to cash in some of his potential Carmelo trade chips to tweak the roster (while preserving future salary-cap room) and shore up some of its obvious weaknesses (i.e. effective size, a go-to shooter).

All that said, here’s a look back at the first half and ahead at what might follow:

What went right: Certainly the performances of free agents Stoudemire and Raymond Felton eased the pain of not getting LeBron James.

Wilson Chandler, although slumping recently (24-for-62 overall and 5-for-25 on three-point attempts), also has their back more often than not as he continues to improve while lessening the need for Danilo Gallinari, who has suffered the only significant injury thus far (missing six games with a sprained knee).

Landry Fields’ glue-guy performance as a starter has been beyond surprising.

And while Gallinari remains inconsistent, the unexpected shooting performances of Shawne Williams and Bill Walker have offset that somewhat.

All that and more helped produce a 13-1 run that all but saved the Knicks’ season after a 3-8 start.

What went wrong: The Knicks are just 10-9 at the Garden and squandered a plethora of winnable games there and on the road that could cost them a potential first-round home-court playoff spot.

On opening night, they blew a nine-point lead with 5 1/2 minutes to play vs. Portland. Thirteen days later in Minnesota, Kevin Love stunned them with 31 points and 31 boards as they squandered a 21-point lead in the final 21 minutes.

November home losses to the 76ers and Warriors also weren’t pretty, nor was the Jan. 14 loss to Sacramento.

They also got too excited about Timofey Mozgov by starting him straight out of training camp when he’s actually a project.

What needs to go right: Continued good health is essential, because if Stoudemire gets hurt, forget the playoffs. Perhaps Felton, too. With D’Antoni’s eight-to-nine-man rotation, there’s little margin for error — but none with those two.

Another capable big body (Chris Kaman? Samuel Dalembert?) that lets Stoudemire slide back to power forward would also help, as would the go-to "second scorer" D’Antoni said Thursday his team lacks.

’Antoni and Stoudemire also acknowledged the offense has gotten away from its pick-and-roll foundation that served it so well during its early season surge. That lack of attention to detail is a prime reason for the current 1-5 funk.

What can’t go wrong: Besides injuries, Fields, Williams and Walker can’t turn back into pumpkins.

As for their latest schneid, the Knicks need to get it out of their system because they’re on pace to win 44 games, which got Charlotte the seventh seed last season and a one-and-done postseason.

Sixth wouldn’t be much better this season, with a likely big three of Boston, Miami and Orlando lurking.

Their goal should be to move up, even with fifth-place Orlando 4 1/2 games ahead entering Thursday’s play, fourth-place Atlanta five up and third-place Chicago 5 1/2 ahead.

That level should be their goal if they want a chance to reach the second round.

It’s a lot to ask, but after the Knicks’ breakthrough first half, the preseason goal to just make the playoffs shouldn’t be enough anymore.

I like Chandler off the bench. He can play more positions than Gallinari and if he comes in off the bench he can focus more on being a scoring threat and a burst of energy.

He'll probably close out games with Chandler-Amare at the 4/5 so it's not the end of the world in my eyes. We're losing right now, people criticize the coach for not making enough rotation changes, now he is. So let's see how it works first.

@ yall lashing out on Cake. Come back when we winning man. Dudes got a taste of a winning record and don't want to be sharing the emotional pain of losing.

Chandler off the bench is a good idea just to have a boost since Fields has been quite for a stretch and I'm guessing D'Antoni wants more of a boost from the bench since the starting line up is flat. Chandler, Walker, and Williams off the bench gives us more fire power. Plus Chandler aint accomplishing nothing guarding Duncan tonight or that other dude that Turiaf got a T for pushing
