we need to sign some vets for the low. we have pretty much the same team minus thomas, kidd, and wallace, and camby. the veteran presence helped straighten out the goons like jr. if we could get some veteran leadership, it would help the team immensely.

Pippen bout to seal the deal. :{ :lol

@TommyBeer: Jim Dolan, on WFAN, says his family got him a t-shirt for his birthday that says only 2 words: "Ask Phil"

:lol

I hope Dolan keeps his bad karma away from the Rangers this week....

Would yall have a serious problem with sign and trading Melo this summer to Chicago, getting their 2 first round picks this season in the process? Ive been debating this internally/with people. Before the Phil signing I would have absolutely been fine with this scenario. Melo has done nothing but bust his *** since hes been here and I truly want him to achieve success be it here or somewhere else (the same way I still always root for David Lee, Nate, and Crawford). Also, I cant blame him for leaving a situation that other superstars would be sprinting from right about now with how soft the NBA has gotten. What was formerly considered a "coward move" at the time of Lebron's Decision is suddenly considered the standard in the NBA today 4 years later. Gone are the days of working through struggles to win championships, and it has become harder to do so with the likes of Lebron and Dwight forming super teams. And that Bulls team would be serious if Rose bounces back. Chicago would also be inclined to do this trade rather than sign Melo outright because they need to S&T him (and include the draft picks) if they want to have the available funds to sign Melo (even with a pay cut) and keep Taj Gibson.

This way we would essentially have a tank season next year (finally having a draft pick to use after a bad season), let the expiring contracts come off the books next offseason, and move forward with the 2 picks we would acquire  from Chicago, whoever we draft next year (possible top 5 selection), and cap space for Phil to bring in some players that he likes on the roster.

I love Melo and I do think that Phil/the triangle can turn around his career for the better. He is a phenomenal all around player who I think has become incredibly underrated around the NBA. However I was initially not thrilled by the Phil Jackson hiring because I thought that this team was beyond repair and we should just let Melo be and blow this thing the **** up. I thought we should have brought in an executive with a history of building through the draft to lead this process but of course Dolan needed to sway the media away from the trainwreck season and sign the big name for $60 million. Ive since reconsidered my stance a little bit after reading Phil's book, but this could still be a very solid alternative plan and a total "un-Knicks like move."

Another potential plus is that in the process, it would essentially render the big deal made by James Dolan a failure... and not because the one potential Dolan scapegoat, Melo, couldnt live up to his expectations, but rather because he didnt have the necessary pieces around him (and our 2014 draft pic) to form a winning roster, which is EXACTLY what Donnie Walsh was looking to avoid back in the day. A public failure of that magnitude with nobody to scapegoat but himself could be exactly what we need as Knicks fans to give James Dolan the reality check he has circumvented over and over again, placing the blame on a number of other individuals in the process. With that kind of reality check under his belt he may finally call it time to sit back, sign the checks, and let his $60 million dollar man earn his pay day.

Thoughts?

EDIT: the pippen pic tho

I was all for trading Melo for draft picks, but after the Phil hire I think he can win one here if he stays patient.

Its easier to attract top FAs with Melo already on the team, than with unproven young players (top 5 next year and lets say both the Bulls picks).

IDK why you guys would want picks from Chicago. it's not like we would get lottery picks in return. Now, if we were to get Butler, Noah, Gibson and some picks in exchange then I'd be for it.

Yea honestly if anything Melo should atleast opt in for the last year to see what phil can bring to the table

I'm so glad GR8 is posting again...

Still not reading, but happy to have you back.:lol

I'm kidding be back tomorrow after I finish reading his last post.

@PhilJackson11: Undaunted by "stuff" we will continue to have a relationship with the press, which informs our fan base#chagrined

Does this mean they'll be open and truthful about player injury statuses as well? That might be asking for too much too soon :lol

What? I dont think Chicago does that deal even if it was the only possible way they could get Melo

My point about the trade is that Melo is great, but he has 4-5 years left in his prime. So by retaining him you are banking on the possibility of building a championship contending roster around him over the next 3 seasons. I get that it is obviously easier to attract marquee free agents with Melo but there is still A LOT of work to be done if the Knicks want to contend with Lebron (wherever his future is), OKC, Houston, or whatever other teams arise in the coming seasons.

Obviously Melo's value is greater than 2 mid first round picks but if we cant build a winning team around Melo in the coming seasons than what is the point of having him around. A seperation might be in the best interest of both him and the Knicks. Like I said before pre-Phil Jackson I 100% felt it was time to blow things up, now I am a bit more ambivalent. But 2 mid first rounders in a very good draft plus a potential top 5 pick next season (after a Melo-less tank year), along with whatever young players Phil decides he wants to stick around, plus cap space, is a pretty good look moving forward with a new regime compared to just trying to reload through free agency which failed us in 2010. Only difference is that now we have Melo so im down but Phil has to really believe that Melo is capable of leading a championship roster and also that he can build a roster capable of winning a championship around Melo. If hes not confident in either of those, than im all for blowing this up and moving forward through the draft like we have never done before.

Basically I want to see the Knicks sign Melo to less than the max if Phil believes in him (most likely scenario IMO and one that I am 100% fine with because I believe in Melo and this would mean that Phil does also) or I would like to see the Knicks let Melo go his own way, get picks and/or young players back in return and rebuild the roster through the draft.

The 2 scenarios that I ABSOLUTELY, under NO circumstances, do not want to occur out of this situation this summer are:

A) Sign Melo to the maximum deal

B) Let Melo walk, but still try and load up on expiring contracts at the risk of future assets in an attempt to reload through free agency next year like we tried/failed to do in 2010 rather than trying to make moves through the draft

Doing either of these would be EXTREMELY short-sighted/ CLASSIC Knick/Dolan bull **** IMO that would give us 0 chance at going anywhere beyond the 2nd round of the playoffs or maybe a lucky *** ECF appearance in a watered down eastern conference for the foreseeable future...

We either gotta keep Melo at a reduced cost so we can afford to sign quality free agents around him next summer or blow this thing the **** up and move forward through the draft.

And thanks for the backhanded compliment HTTB... I missed you too
