Here’s something to keep in mind if you’re keeping an eye on the Knicks’ coaching search: Jeff Van Gundy said on Thursday that he’s never ruled out the possibility of taking the job.

In other words, if Phil Jackson calls, it sounds like Van Gundy will listen.

“I never said I wouldn’t consider [the Knicks],” Van Gundy, an ESPN NBA analyst, said Thursday morning on ESPN Radio’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

“One thing I try to stay away from, Colin, is talking about things in public. Interest in jobs or other jobs, I don’t think it does the teams any good. I don’t think it does, frankly, coaches any good. I’m very content in whatever I do to sort of stay in the background. The Knicks, no matter who they hire, will always have a special place in my heart. They gave me the opportunity to come into pro basketball as an assistant. I stayed there 13 years. I love the New York Knicks, always will, regardless of who coaches.”

Van Gundy coached the Knicks from 1995-96 to 2001-02 and had the third-most wins in franchise history before walking away from the job in December 2001. In a radio interview last June, Van Gundy expressed regret over leaving the Knicks in the manner that he did.

On Thursday, Van Gundy praised the organization for its hire of Phil Jackson.

“I think the Phil Jackson hire was a great hire. ... It’s just one of those unique places that once you work there for as long as I did and you live there, you can’t help but root for them to be super successful,” Van Gundy said.

Jackson was hired as president in March but struck out on his first head-coaching target, Steve Kerr. That has led to speculation that Jackson could look outside of his “inner circle” for the Knicks’ next head coach. Hence, Van Gundy.

But sources told ESPN’s Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne that Jackson is not worried about selling New Yorkers on his eventual hire and that there have been no indications that Jackson will hire an established coach.

For the time being, that would eliminate Mark Jackson's name from the list of potential coaches. Van Gundy, Jackson's former broadcasting partner, praised Jackson for his success in Golden State. The Warriors fired Jackson last week for reported clashes with management.

"What he did there was he took a team that wasn’t very good and made it very good in a powerful Western Conference and he took a team historically, who was very poor defensively, and made them elite," Van Gundy said. "And then he took a team in the playoffs this year that was very hurt and got them to overperform in the playoffs, losing a tough seventh game to what I consider the best team in the NBA right now in the Clippers. I just think we should be careful in negative labels over what he accomplished."

Van Gundy also discussed the possibility of Phil Jackson taking over as coach.

"Certainly, I think when you’re the president of the organization, you have to evaluate and do what you think is best for the organization as long as it falls within the parameters of what he is comfortable with," Van Gundy said. "I would suspect that Phil Jackson the president would think very highly of Phil Jackson the coach and all that he’s accomplished and think that this could be a really workable situation. Most definitely. I'm sure it’s run across his mind. Whether he feels up for that challenge or not, or wants to do it, or wants to stay in the background, I couldn’t speak to."

I got no hate towards Marv at all. He was the only dude who wasn't a yes man. If we had more dudes with his mentality in the front office we could've been better off...before Dolan fired them at least.

Breen just criticizes obnoxiously. Marv was real about this BS the organization was masquerading as a "team". Even with his weird fetishes :lol

And Mike Dunleavy Sr.? Hmmm. Took the Lakers to the Finals and the Blazers reached the conference finals twice but never broke through. Never hear anyone talk positively about him either., probably because he had some crappy squads also.

Loyalty bro , Marv feels a certain way well than he can go **** himself , wether I agree or not ...
How can you be that loyal to Jim Dolan?  Because that's basically what you are saying.

Marv is just sharing his own feelings about being done dirty in a job he used to have...  He's got a right to go there.  How's he supposed to remain loyal to someone that fired him?

I guess I'm not a Knicks fan, but I always thought they had some of the best announcers because they weren't crazy homers like the idiots that Boston has.

Im loyal to the threads, nothing else . Do we have nothing else to bicker about in here :lol

Gus calling football games is magical.

I would watch Texans games just to listen to him.

Pausing Spike makes me laugh till this day.

Nah, Marv was better than breen

Eff everyone in this thread that doesn't think so

Enjoy your weekend :)

Yea, I liked Marv more too. Like dude said - he kept it real & wasn't a yes man. He worked for the Knicks for like 30 years, he knew everything behind the scenes. Can't blame him for letting Kerr know just how dirty and schemey Dolan is behind closed doors.

I'm just saying if the sensitive dudes on here who complain and can't handle some criticism from Breen on occasion, they would no way and no doubt would have been able to handle Marv. :lol

Marv Albert is an American treasure, though.

Mike Breen hopped out a Life Alert commercial.

There's a special place in hell for the majority of the New York media. One of the biggest reasons we can't have nice things. Some truly disgusting people out for self.

Marv is much much much better than breen. As stated, breen is just obnoxious. He's the kid who raised his hand when they forgot to assign homework.

I think it's a stretch to say Marv got done dirty though. :lol

Been saying it for years, they really go out of their way to stir up **** ...little unrelated but the daily news puts a headline up of the Jets DC "slapping" a oman at the bar, turns out there were at least 13 witneses there saying its not true and the woman was out of her mind, but of course the cockroaches want attention.....wash rinse repeat....i ont blame big names for not wanting to come here bc of the media which happens a lot im sure

Gotta agree with this

JVG :hat

When Dunleavy decides to take a job elsewhere after flirting with the Knicks, give Jeff a call.

Cue 'I'm coming home' commercial.

I would love to have jeff van gundy as coach of the Knicks. I dont really like Phil trying to bring in a former player who will essentially coach Phil's triangle offense but allows him to not have to be head coach himself. Rather have NYK bring in an established successful coach. Do you really think 'Melo will want to stay and play under Derek Fisher? when he could go to Chicago and play with Derrick Rose and Boozer or team up with Harden, Howard and Lin in Houston?

Houston doesn't have the cap for Melo, do they?

They have 4 big contracts with Harden, Howard, Lin, and Asik so if he were to go there it would have to be a sign & trade.

Y'all have to let Phil do his thing. He's tryinntonchange this organization around and he's trying to implement his personality. If that means hiring a coach whose a former player so be it.

No point in dwelling in the past and going after JVG or picking up Mark Jackson. Those are "Dolan type" moves. If you really want Phil to take control you have to trust him now. He is the basketball mind.

I think Phil will make a good decision. I trust that hes not a championship coach for no reason. The man seems to know what he's doing.
