You obviously didn't even read the article you posted:

The arbitrator also issued an injunction against Carter ordering him not to endorse or wear the apparel or footwear of PUMA's competitors for three years, and ordered Carter to pay PUMA's attorneys' fees and costs.

Court order that he can't endorse another shoe for 3 years...so he couldn't even sign with Nike under court order. 

That's really the whole point.  Of course LeBron can just stop wearing NIke, but he can't jump to another brand, sign a contract, get paid, or wear their shoes until 2017.  The court said so to Vince.  So NO, you can't just jump ship and wear something else when under a contract.

What does that have to do with anything? Did Vince Carter stop wearing Puma? Yes. Did he wear Nike? Yes.
