ces: Petrino leaving NFL for Arkansas job
ESPN.com

Updated: December 11, 2007, 6:16 PM ET

Bobby Petrino will resign his position as coach of the Atlanta Falcons and is close to an agreement to become the new coach at the University of Arkansas, multiple sources tell ESPN.
According to sources, Petrino and his agent have been talking with the Falcons about his preference to return to the college ranks. The former Louisville coach was looking for an opportunity to break into the Southeastern Conference ranks, and Arkansas was a natural fit.
There is no deal yet between Petrino and Arkansas, but once there is, Petrino is expected to be paid around $3 million a year, sources said.

Petrino signed a five-year, $24 million contract to be the Falcons head coach, so he will be taking a pay cut to re-enter the college ranks. The Falcons are 3-10 and have had their season torn apart by Michael Vick's involvement in a dogfighting ring and subsequent 23-month jail sentence, which was levied Monday.
Petrino will succeed Houston Nutt, who was hired by Mississippi immediately after resigning at Arkansas. Tommy Tuberville and Tommy Bowden were both linked to the Arkansas opening, but they remained as coaches at Auburn and Clemson, respectively.
Arkansas flirted with hiring Jim Grobe -- a private fundraising arm for the Razorbacks approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach -- but Grobe stayed with the Demon Deacons.

Information from ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton was used in this report.

Another college coach who couldn't cut it.

However this is big news for hog fans. Only if D-Mac wasn't gonna be a #1 pick. Him with Petrino would be crazy.

can things get any worse for the Falcons. This guy came in and cut players, changed things and then decides to leave talkin about rough. The Falcons are in atough place for the next couple of years. This will be a team that i will be cheering for the next couple of weeks

They just played a game last night....Dude should have just stayed at Louisville....Everybody ain't built for the NFL.....

Lets go ahead and blame this on Vick too....

Les Miles better take that Michigan job and get out the SEC. He's not even close to the likes of Petrino/Saban/Meyer/Spurrier etc. Once the talent Saban isentirely gone, he's going to get exposed Larry Coker style.

I dont wish bad things on anyone but Arthur Blank thought he was about to put things behind him with Mike Vick being locked up..

[Lee Corso] Not so fast..... [Lee Corso]

Damn.

Not unbelievably surprising though, and I can't really blame him. Things went completely to the crapper from the moment he got there.

Well I'm torn here... for one, these college coaches that leave cushy jobs to test the waters in the NFL are morons in my opinion... you can make nearly asmuch in college, if not more, and have far less stress put on you for it... not to mention, the going is just easier in college from a control standpoint,it's YOUR program.. you're at the mercy of ownership and contracts in the NFL.

BUT - in this case, given all that's happened with Vick and what not down there, I can't blame him for wanting to bail...

Lets go ahead and blame this on Vick too....
well I mean, he was brought there specifically to work with Vick and build his O with him... and wound up with John Joesph Harrington

Excellent decision for Bobby since the pro level was tough for him. Hopefully he'll turn the Razorbacks into national contenders.

As for the Falcons
