So Rethlisberger isn't a 'big star'? A two time Super Bowl winner, on one of America's favorite team? Race has a lot to do on how they report/cover stories IMO, this story is a classic example of it. Kobe's case was ALL over the place, just like Tiger's and Vick's. I had to open this thread to see if there was any new news on this case, because it's seems to be swept under a rug.

No. Ben Roethlisberger is NOT a "big star."  The other guys you named (Kobe, Tiger, Vick)....THOSE are big stars.  Ben is not a BIG star.  I actually agree, that race is kind of a problem here, but your examples as to why are poor.

False. They're covering it every day now, but they were not the first ones who broke the story.. It took them a couple days and they were the last news network to report it.

It'll be interesting to see what Goodell does or doesn't do..

are some of you guys seriously arguing that there is no racism in sports coverage? like, for real?

I love when people r ignorant to the reality that racism still is alive and well and if u complain you're pulling the card.

I aint da only one who feels this either.

This is racist http://niketalk.com/topic/242771. Big Ben not getting as much media coverage as Tiger Woods because he has about 1/20th of his popularity is not. Racism absolutely still exists, but not everything is racist just because it involves people of race.

**edit

I didn't read that whole thread before posting that link. That would be an example of racism if it were real though. Although I guess technically whoever made the fake account is still racist though.

I was talking about the latest incident. I agree they dropped the ball with the first allegation, but all things considered I can see where they would want to get certain facts answered before reporting it. I just don't think it was racism. If it would have been a criminal case I think it would have been handled a little different.

One last point because there really is no use arguing because everyone had their opinions formed before they entered this thread to begin with.

Rape is a huge allegation, and guilty or not it can damage your reputation for a very long time. This coming after Kobe being falsely accused and all the dirt that was thrown on his name. Your ESPN and you get word that Ben Roethlisberger has just been accused of rape, but the woman accusing him did not file any criminal charges, she is just suing him for a very large sum of money. That wouldn't make you stop for a minute and question this? Throw out any information we know now on her reasoning for doing it this way or taking so long. Think about just getting this story and hearing that information. Seeing the damage this causes to someones career just from being accused, wouldn't you 2nd guess making this a big story? I do not care what athlete this is, I know I personally would think twice about it. Then again maybe I am naive, and maybe espn is racist. I am just looking at it through my prospective.

Your statement is false in the second case too.
Ben Latest: VIP Partier Tells Story, Private Eye Hired, Cop Seen In Photo
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- A young woman told Channel 4 Action News on Friday that she was one of about 20 who partied with Ben Roethlisberger at a nightclub last week on the night that a female college student told police she was sexually assaulted by the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback.

"Everyone keeps talking about how nice he was. He was not nice," the woman said.

The woman -- who asked not to be identified -- told reporter Ari Hait that people who were with Roethlisberger invited her into the VIP area of the the Capital City club."

A bunch of big guys were like, 'Come back in here,' and I was like, I'm just trying to have fun, whatever," she said.http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/video/22827036/index.html

She said that women were fawning over the star quarterback, and that he hit on her but she wasn't interested and didn't like the way he was acting, so she left."

He bought a round of shots for girls and said, 'All you #++#%$%, take my shots,' and I got pissed because that's very rude and disrespectful to call girls a bunch of #++#%$%," she said.

Before she left, she said she saw Roethlisberger with the woman who would eventually become his accuser. She didn't think anything of it until the next morning when she heard about the accusations."

The fact that people are talking about how he's such a nice guy at the bar, buying us a bunch of shots, because there's a bunch of drunk girls happy that they're getting free shots -- he was very arrogant," she said.

Roethlisberger has not been charged with any crimes. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing to look into the 20-year-old woman's claims of what happened to her in the early-morning hours of March 5.

Atlanta attorney Ed Garland has been hired by Roethlisberger, and the lawyer had private investigator Charles Mittelstadt in Milledgeville on Friday to ask questions and try to figure out what happened on the night in question. Mittelstadt has worked on behalf of Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis and rapper T.I. in the past."

I won't comment specifically about any particular aspect, but I think you can assume that we're looking into all aspects of this allegation," Mittelstadt told Channel 4 Action News on Friday.

Also on Friday, the local Union-Recorder newspaper published a photo that shows Milledgeville Police Sgt. Jerry Blash posing with his arm around Roethlisberger hours before the alleged victim approached Blash to report that she was assaulted.

Police Chief Woodrow Blue told the newspaper that even though Blash wrote the incident report -- which did not include Roethlisberger's name -- he had little involvement in the subsequent investigation and the picture of Blash with Roethlisberger did not affect the investigation "at all."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the majority of the investigation because of the Milledgeville Police Department's limited resources.

According to Carl Cansino, a lawyer for Capital City, Blash came to the nightclub to arrange the VIP room for Roethlisberger and his friends.

Cansino said he doesn't know if Blash was focused on helping Roethlisberger or if he was trying to keep the streets safe."

It could even be crowd control -- like, say, there's a lot of people in the line there, maybe at the instruction of one of them, can you see if you can get us in so we can get off the street because we're just tired of maybe giving autographs or whatever the case may be," Cansino said.

Ben now doesn't have to provide a DNA sample, and apparently the woman is not cooperating and talking with authorities anymore. Hm...

Goodell still wants to meet with Ben regardless, and even if dropped I think he still gets suspended for 2-4 games.

Ben is nowhere near the popularity scale as those other three...Not even close.
These racism shticks are aimless and ugly accusations. You guys just start spouting racism any chance you get, whether it's relative to the story or not.

At most, the amount of racism involved in this story is probably < 5%.

so the security tape that would have had the footage was "taped over" .... hmmmmm sounds suspicious

One question tho, does it seem like a n even playing field when Warren Sapp was falsely accused of an assault before the superbowl he was immediately pulled off the air by the NFL, but Big Ben hasnt been asked to even speak to Goodell?

one day after Vick was reported in the dog fighting scandal, he was in NY visiting with Goodell...

Big Ben and his rapist wit are buying himself out of this case. Girl aint talking to police, footage taped over, no request for DNA. Must be costing him a pretty penny. Leader of men and raper of women.

That was almost incoherent....

Gunna Godell has already said he was meeting with him, and he was waiting till after the meetings. I'm sure it will be next week if not sooner, then again after he is either charged or it is dropped

The manager of the club where Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is accused of having sexually assaulted a 20-year-old Georgia woman said Thursday one of the woman's friends told him a member of Roethlisberger's entourage had denied her entrance to the area leading to the bathroom where she believed the accuser and Roethlisberger were that night.

The accuser told police later that night Roethlisberger had assaulted her in the club's bathroom.

Rocky Duncan, the manager of Capital City bar in Milledgeville, Ga., said Roethlisberger and his entourage of "about nine" people, not including the accuser or her friends, had arrived at the bar at approximately 1:10 a.m. Duncan said a member of Roethlisberger's group had asked for VIP seating in a private section of the club and a bouncer from the club to be stationed outside the area. Duncan said Roethlisberger's friend said, "We want the girls [to be allowed back into that section]."

Duncan said he escorted Roethlisberger and his group to the back room, sealed off by a curtain, that serves as the VIP area. Duncan said the bouncer, stationed outside the curtain, allowed women into the VIP area throughout the night.

Later in the evening, according to Duncan, most of Roethlisberger's group had wandered from the VIP area to a larger room that opens up off it -- a room also closed to the general public. Duncan said there were about 25 people in that area, called "the stage room."

Duncan said he saw Roethlisberger standing and talking with what appeared to be a woman sitting on a stool a few feet from the bathroom door, which was separated from the stage room by a 4-foot divider. Roethlisberger's frame blocked Duncan from seeing the woman. But Duncan added he had never seen the accuser and did not know what she looked like. Duncan said a member of Roethlisberger's entourage, whom he called "the ringleader," was sitting on a stool about a foot away from the door that led to the area where Roethlisberger and the woman had been talking.

Approximately 30 seconds after he saw Roethlisberger talking to the woman, Duncan said one of the accuser's friends approached Duncan and said, "I think my friend is in the bathroom with Ben, but the door [leading to the bathroom area] is locked, and I'm trying to get back there, and this guy [one of Roethlisberger's friends] wouldn't let me through." Duncan said she also told him, "I think my friend may be drunk."

Duncan said the accuser's friend "did not seem frantic, it was someone just looking for her friend." He said he told the woman she could either try to hop over the divider that separated the stage room from the bathroom area or "go around to the back and go through the backside entrance, because that door doesn't have a handle to it and you can go in that way." Duncan said he didn't know if the woman tried to get back into the bathroom area.

When asked if he thought there was anything alarming about a member of Roethlisberger's group was standing outside a locked door, prohibiting someone from going into that area, Duncan said, "No, not really. Those guys had been protective of Ben all night. You wouldn't want someone taking a snapshot of Ben using the toilet."

There are seven cameras inside Capital City, according to Duncan. There are no cameras in the VIP area or in the "stage room" because those areas were added during a renovation. From camera footage that records the entrance and the main dance floor area, Duncan said he believes he saw the accuser and her friends -- which included the woman who had approached him earlier -- leave the bar around 1:45 a.m.

"They just walked out together," he said, "like you see any other time."

Duncan said he learned someone had made an accusation against Roethlisberger when "I got a call from Sergeant [Jerry] Blash, and he said a young woman approached him and said Ben assaulted her. He asked if they [Roethlisberger's group] were still at the club, and I said, 'Yes.' "

Duncan said police came to the club and spoke "briefly" with Roethlisberger and his group, in what Duncan described as an informal way. Duncan said he talked with police March 5, the day the allegations were made.

When he was asked if Roethlisberger had seemed inebriated that night, Duncan said, "You see a lot at a bar. Was he the drunkest person I ever met? No. Did he have a buzz? Probably."

On March 8, three days after the alleged incident, Duncan said police reviewed video footage of the night at his office in the club. The police were called away suddenly because of a murder in the area. Shortly afterwards, Duncan said, his "tech guy" tried to make a copy of the camera outputs to give to the police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which was assisting on the case, but encountered problems. Duncan said they had trouble accessing the video again, and he was later informed by the GBI that there was nothing on the recordings.

The GBI said it has spoken with every member of Roethlisberger's group, except Roethlisberger. The GBI's initial request for a sample of Roethlisberger's DNA was rescinded more than a week ago, but its request to speak with Roethlisberger is still outstanding. Despite recently published reports to the contrary, the accuser "is still actively cooperating with the GBI's investigation," a source with knowledge of the investigation said Thursday.

ESPN phoned two women who were listed in the police incident report as being with the accuser that night, to ask for comment or corroboration. One said, "I can't comment on any of this, I'm sorry;" the other woman hung up.

Roethlisberger's attorney, Ed Garland, was not immediately available for comment.

Kelly Naqi is a reporter for ESPN.

This dude serious?  You can leave the bar, take the 3rd right at the 2nd set of lights and talk to some guy named Ron and he'll let you in.  Why not just take her back there?

Lets see here.

A star-struck town and bar.
Police Sgt posing with Ben for photos hours before having to help write up the report.
Locked doors with no witnesses and he-said, she-said stories.
Video cameras that ended being "accidentally" taped over despite this woman going to police that very night.
A likely small-town set of prosecutors overmatched for Ben's power attorneys.
The accused having deep pockets.

Take all that in plus use recent examples of how this works and one can see the odds clearly favor Roethlisberger at this point. But who knows.

It would be nice to get this figured out one way or another I'm already tired of wondering if Dixon is going to be starting QB

PFT:
Boston attorney says he investigated another Roethlisberger incident

So with the possibility of a Georgia prosecution official gone and only a civil lawsuit in Nevada remaining, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger can exhale and focus only on playing football and not barhopping, right?

Maybe not.

Boston lawyer Harry Manion told WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Show on Tuesday that Manion was involved in an investigation regarding another Big Ben incident.

Said Manion:  "[T]here is a history here this is just super troubling."

Manion specifically referred to an incident from 2009, also in Nevada.  "Six months ago I was retained by a client of mine and a close friend to investigate allegations against Ben Roethlisberger in a Las Vegas nightclub that were absolutely identical to this Georgia girl's story," Manion said.

Manion believes that, if Roethlisberger ever is going to change his ways, the near miss in Georgia will be the impetus.

"Unless he's totally brain dead -- and we don't know -- he would be scared," Manion said.  "Because he has really walked a perilous line here.  There's a whole litany here, not only my experience, I have connected with several other people that have experience.  And you know, there's only so far that he said/she said will get you.  There's only so far that paying hush money will get you, if hush money is paid.  And there's only so far that, 'Gee, we're celebrities, we have a target on our back,' will get you.  When you see this much smoke, month after month and continuously . . . .  It's the scene that he's gotten himself caught up with, and the belief that he can walk, and so far, so good.  But it's hurting him.  He's hurt.  He has been damaged.  And the next one, the wrath of God's going to come down on him, if there is a next one."

No charges against Roethlisberger hints at possible settlement with accuser

Journalists are sometimes accused of burying the lead, when the most compelling piece of information appears almost as an afterthought in the middle or bottom of a news item.

Ocmulgee (Ga.) Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright arguably buried the lead on Monday when announcing that charges would not be pursued against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. After discussing the evidence that prompted the decision, Bright added in "oh by the way" fashion that the alleged victim in the sexual assault case had indicated, in a letter written by her lawyer on March 17, that she no longer wished to pursue the matter. As the letter indicates, the alleged victim chose to abandon the matter not because she believed she hadn't been sexually assaulted, but because she concluded that participating in a public trial with intense media scrutiny conflicted with her long-term best interests.

Most parents of 20-year-old daughters likely would agree with that sentiment. But it created a major problem for Bright. In most criminal cases (except in the event of a murder, where the victim is physically incapable of cooperation), no viable prosecution can proceed if the victim has no desire to participate. Given the very high American standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, a case premised on the star witness being a reluctant victim has no chance of success.

Frankly, Bright should have made that point from the outset of his remarks. It would have made it far easier to understand the situation if Bright merely had said, "Look, there were only two people in that bathroom. One of them isn't talking. The other one doesn't wish to proceed. It's a case no one can win."

Let's be candid about this. The alleged victim and her family didn't promptly hire a lawyer with the goal of having someone communicate on their behalf with the prosecutor. They hired a lawyer to advise them as to the alleged victim's rights -- and in turn to represent her interests in conjunction with an eventual civil claim.

Even if the amount of settlement reflects only the expenses that would have been incurred by Roethlisberger if the prosecution had proceeded and/or the costs of defending against a civil suit, the amount would have been sizable. Still, and as suggested in the wake of the initial charges, it would have been very prudent for Roethlisberger to attempt to use his vast financial resources to put this matter behind him.

Bradshaw on Roethlisberger: "He doesn't like me, and I'm learning not to like him."

Steelers Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who has made a great post-football living as a football analyst and commentator, has offered up some strong analysis and commentary regarding current Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

"Our relationship is not any good," Bradshaw said of Roethlisberger, in video available at ESPN.com.  "When I told him to park the motorcycle, he got pissed.  Then he had the accident, and since then he doesn't like me, and I'm learning not to like him."

Added Bradshaw, "He has got to realize who he is.  He is an elite athlete in the National Football League.  He's got an image problem right now.  Best thing to do is never put yourself in that position again."

The full interview deserves a listen, including the part where Bradshaw acknowledges that the only reason women would flock to him and to Roethlisberger is because of their ability to throw a football.  "I'm not that attractive," Bradshaw said, "and neither is Ben."

TMZ:
Big Ben's Other Accuser: We're Not Giving Up

Ben Roethlisberger ain't out of the woods in Georgia just yet -- TMZ has learned the lawyer for Ben's other alleged rape victim is planning to use the findings from the Milledgeville investigation in the one remaining case against the NFL star.

As we previously reported, Big Ben is accused in a lawsuit of raping Andrea McNulty in a Lake Tahoe hotel back in 2008. No criminal charges were ever filed.

According to McNulty's lawyer, Cal Dunlap, he is currently "seeking whatever portions of the Georgia investigation that are available" -- including interviews and police reports.

Dunlap also tells us they also expect to sit down and talk with the Steelers' QB in the near future -- but due to the fact that Ben wouldn't even talk to investigators in Georgia, a meeting with Dunlap seems highly unlikely.

l love Bradshaw, cracks me up. Ben will settle a civil case with the GA woman most likely. Also he needs to learn that sex in a club bathroom isn't the best idea. You can do it at a house or hotel, you don't have to do it right there, moron. That GA DA was pissed he couldn't press charges, you could tell he really wanted to be able to go after this case
