Asian Culture Discussion Thread

I'm down for Affirmative Action cause we do need to have some positive regulations to attempt to balance out the negative ones. I think it needs to be investigated and revised, but definitely not thrown away. I think including socioeconomic status as a bigger factor might be something at least worth considering.

I tend to see Asian Americans express resentment more often towards African Americans when it comes to this issue because they see a bigger gap in that comparison. And they think, "oh, we're both minorities, how come we have to have such a higher score than them?" And I think this is probably the area where I still see the model minority construct still being in effect. White people will argue against Affirmative Action through the lens of an Asian-American: "Look at how Affirmative Action hurts Asian Americans. It's not fair." They'll group Asians and Whites and say things like, "why do Asian and White people have to have better scores than Black and Latinos?"

Here's my main issue with it. Why the f do we have to have better scores than white people? Where is the line of reasoning in that? They are still more than double the population of Asian Americans in most of these Ivy Leagues. They haven't faced roadblocks from racism cause they were the ones doing it. How do you explain that?

haha yeah. it baffles my mind how much say in politics/society she has
that’s the power of the mouf/kitty

Like frink85 frink85 said, it's all good until it's one of your own family members that's gunned down.

Scary how that applies to shootings here too...Americans don't have much to act superior about
one of my uncles got busted at a drug raid at some underground casino. he ended up going to jail. idiot move on his end, but thank goodness he wasn’t shot down. :smh: the administration ain’t ******* around, man.

Instead of quotas based on race, it really should be quotas based on socioeconomic status. If colleges don't even consider race when going throughapplications, and only consider test scores, socioeconomic status etc it'll probably be a more fair system than it is now. The drawback, however, is that universities may be more favorable to those in higher income households. Sad reality this world we live in.

Also, keep in mind, unless they're differentiating and getting specific in the college admission process, people from certain parts of Asia don't do as well as East Asians academically for a variety of reasons.

I believe Laotians, Hmong, and Cambodians have very high poverty rates and do relatively bad in terms of educational attainment. They are probably really getting ****** over just based on simply how we categorize people.

thought this was real interesting

Asians aren’t a monolith lol. Like whatscomplex whatscomplex said there are a lot of southeast Asian groups and even East Asian groups struggling out here. Also we understand that no AA would just let white applicants take the spots :lol

Despite what the NBA thread says we do care about social policy for everyone :{

For anyone here that tried to downplay the Reddick slur incident: F that, there is no forgiving/forgetting. When people use terms like that, they mean it. And the action will repeat.
Here's the latest example:

Taco Bell employee fired for 'derogatory slur' printed on receipt:

王八蛋

The overall blatant commercial pandering by NBA to Chinese fans is too much. It's nice to acknowledge and try, but don't really need to hear players wish Happy New Year. And certainly not after that vid.

Edit: sure he may have been tongue tied or was trying to hard be street slang talking. Don't care. Still annoying.

I don't want to generalize, but from personal experience, blacks have a very lax perception of racism towards Asians.

The amount of times I've heard "Hurry up and buy" and Rush Hour referenced is tired.

As an Asian I can't say general perception of most blacks is overly positive either, I hope things improve.

I was thinking about Black Panther today, and I was wondering, do you guys **** with any of the current Asian American actors where we could even have an Asian American dominated film with actors we actually like? Would you prefer new no-name actors if it somehow happened?

The only Asian American actor that I like that comes to mind is Steven Yeun. When these few Asian American specific roles pop up, people always start naming Asian American actors, and I always kind of prefer the idea of just giving someone new a chance.

John Cho, I would bet everything I own he would be even a bigger star if he wasn’t Asian.

Speaking of BP, I hope whenever Marvel decides to cast Namor they choose an Asian.

If, and a huge if, Marvel decides to do a standalone Namor film it's not gonna be anytime soon.

I guess it's possible for him to be a villain in BP or something.

that'd be pretty dope

Interesting mix of known and new names. Read the book some time ago. Curious to see how movie will work and come together. Hard to say. See what happens. Sidenote: throws me off seeing the Fresh Off The Boat mom in a different younger role. Just saying.

Yeah Constance is so gorgeous. I’d be tempted to wife someone who looks like her quick.

Yea fellas, althought i hate her character on the show...shes fine as hell.

An all asian cast could be Daniel Wu, Sung Kang, Justin Chon, Steven Yuen, Lee Byung-Hun, Benedict Wong, Rick Yune, Kris Wu, Ron Yuan, David So, Awkwafina, Jamie Chung, Aziz Ansari, Kumail Nanjiani, Priyanka Chopra, Fan Bingbing, Jing Tian, Zhu Zhu, Olivia Cheng, Claudia Kim.

That's a cast of 20 and yes I'm including South Asians in this cast
