Asian Culture Discussion Thread

I went to middle school in San Jose; our yearbooks had 3-4 pages of just Nguyens,Trans, and Patels :rofl:I think there were maybe 10-15 white people in our entire class.

High school was a HUGE culture shock to me, since my parents sent me to a private high school in the rich white side of town. No more DBZ t shirts, lightning gel, and rubber banded jeans anymore; it was now Hollister, cargo shorts, and floppy surfer hair everywhere. The handful of Filipinos and I were basically outcasts that formed our own hypebeast crew

What HS you go to?

Archbishop Mitty. Hated every year of it there; just full of stereotypical douchebag rich kids. I wanted to go to Silver Creek (which at the time was a bad school but is decent now) with all my friends, but my overdramatic parents thought I'd drop out and end up being a drug dealer. They bribed me to go to Mitty by getting me the Sony Minidisk player, which obviously became irrelevant in 3 months because of the iPod :smh:

It was a really nice campus, and the teachers were great, so I won't take that away from that school. I also liked how despite being a Catholic school, the staff members were extremely liberal in every aspect and didn't treat me any differently for being atheist.

I just hated being looked down by other students for being dropped off by my parents while they were rolling into the parking lot with their new IS350s and H2 Hummers with spinning rims (not even joking on that one)

Shoutout Aaron Gordon tho

I went to school with Drew Gordon, his older brother. Aaron's everything Drew was supposed to be; Drew was too ignorant :smh:  I mean playing professionally in Europe isn't bad, but still, he was supposed to be much more.

So much activity in this thread today and the past few days, why does that lead me to believe that most of the asian contingent of NT are just now discovering this thread?

ESL took me to great field trips. So I pretended not to speak English lol

damn i shoulda finessed ..

i got called in once and admin asked me if i wanted to get placed in ESL cause during my enrollment my mom said we spoke mandarin at home.

That gal's standup comedy when she was pregnant was kinda entertaining.

Interesting reading younger guys' school experience and the language thing. Came here back in the day just in time for kindergarten. Had to go full day (was half day w/nap time then) and hang with the first graders during lunch. Younger brother went half day but repeat next year in time with his age peers.
No such thing as ESL. Sink or swim. Got treated the same like everyone else. Something to be said for that.

What are your thoughts on non-asians that are into k-pop, etc? Does it feel weird like you're being fetishized? or na? In terms of dating/relationships.

Fetishized is the wrong word to say for k-pop being accepted in the mainstream.

I don’t listen to it, but my sister be saying she sees all types of races being at k-pop concerts, so I would say it’s a universally accepted genre.

I guess the scope that I'm thinking about it is just on Tinder lol. Where I guess the objectification that's inherent on Tinder kind of made it feel more like fetishizing.

At the same time though, I guess all races have this lowkey and we're just seeing it as we start to get more mainstream representation. Don't really have an opinion on it or really mind, just wanted to hear your guy's thoughts.

It really just depends on the person, I wouldn’t say any Asian into hip hop is fetishing black people.

However I’ve noticed recently I’ve been matching with a lot of non Asian girls on tinder and bumble who are into k pop, anime, Asian cuisine, etc. and I’m not sure what to make of it. Most of them have been chill but a few did feel like they only matched with me cause I’m half Asian.

Now that you bring it up, this happened to me once on tinder.
The Mexican chick first hit me up saying “do you like k-pop?”
I was like nah, and I never got a reply back hahaha

Yea, that's where I'm conflicted. Cause it's like American media has historically been majority white, so is it fetishizing white people if a girl references predominantly white films in her bio? Or fetishizing black people if she has black musicians all over her spotify playlist?

I guess it's basically the same thing.

I think it's great. I'm not necessarily into "K-pop" (mainly because i'm an old man) but I grew up listening to Korean music along with rock, rap, r&b etc (80- 90s) and couldn't have imagined one day it'd be so mainstream. The yearly k-concert at the Hollywood Bowl used to be pretty much ALL Korean, Korean Americans, and some other Asians.........went to one last year and was blown away by diversity. One of the security guards was getting down to one of the old time "trot" singers LOL. We proceeded to have a discussion about "soul" vs. "han" and some of the similarities which no doubt struck a chord with him.

One day I was standing in line at a breakfast place, when I overheard the young white girls in front of me talking about some K-boy band. One was stressing over what "Korean" name she was going to pick in her Korean class.........how times have changed.

you mean white girls would date asian guys, the ones who don't have double eyelids, so they'd know what staring into g dragons eyes feel like? j/k

Look at their anthems lol. I could definitely find more too. Nothing wrong with it honestly. Especially cause k-pop is getting to be kind of mainstream now. Just kind of an interesting topic/thing I noticed while on Tinder.

Not just k-pop either. Like mastamind said, there's anime fans, "obsessed with [list of various asian food]", etc. Idk how fetishization is defined, but it almost feels like it. Cause if this isn't, then what is?

Maybe cause these things are subcultures so their fascination with it is more noticeable.
