Asian Culture Discussion Thread

I’m always two minds about this stuff. Happy for her and we get more representative in athletics, but would they be clamoring to claim her as American if she wasn’t an athlete? Likely just another asian immigrant in the eyes of many. They only want you when you do something for them

Article said she was born in California so she isn’t an immigrant.

Beijing is the cleanest city he's been to? Must have been a really clean air day or missed some of the older areas. Time I just transferred flights out, they make you get off plane on tarmac to get on bus for terminal. Could literally not see across street length because of the pollution smog.
Mainland has some serious environmental control issues. And I'm not even a tree hugger to care. Think Singapore might be a better example of quality control.

Yeah, I hear about the bad air pollution in china. People must be developing some bad respiratory problems over there.

He was moreso referring to trash/littering. The streets are clean.

And Singapore is the GOAT city in terms of cleanliness. I despise most American cities after spending time there, as well as after spending time in Tokyo and Seoul. Parts of US big cities are sometimes worse than "third world" cities I've been to, which is why I prefer the suburbs here by far.

The amount of trash, urine, feces, etc. I've seen in the streets and public transportation of SF and NYC

She’s young. I’m not gonna be judging someone with what they identify with. That’s her business. Was reading an article in the barbershop about how her dad sent her to live in Switzerland and the kids at school spoke French and bullied her about how she stuck out from everybody else. She definitely knows she’s a minority.

So proud mane. Honestly since around 2010, we've been getting more and more positive representation. I feel like the needle has finally started moving this past decade.

Honestly waiting for the first big Asian-American NBA star. I feel like Lin was a small taste of how crazy the fanfare is going to get. Imagine an Asian American actually on a Curry-type of level. Dude would be a billionaire easy with all of the support he would get.

One of the last names to be confirmed dead from the FL school shooting: Peter Wang. Chinese kid whose Parents speak limited English. We should remember them ALL and their families in our thoughts and prayers, but always gets me when seeing an Asian face as victim of any crime.
Feel for the kid and family. Peace.

Truly unfortunate. Couldn't imagine what the family is going through coming to the United States to provide a better life for their children. Makes me ******* sick to my stomach. Kid just looked like a ******* psycho. We as a society are ******. I believe it. I remember playing CoD (PC), CSGO, LoL growing up and kids are ******* cancerous pieces of ****s who have sick humor.

On a more positive note. Happy Chinese/Lunar New Year. Enjoy the red envelopes. :)

Anyone listen to Tagalog songs? If you can recommend me some that'd be great. I'd like to listen to some to help broaden my Tagalog. I can understand fluently but when I speak it i blank out on words and it sounds so damn Americanized :{ :lol

We held on to our garbage for so damn long during the day cause we couldn't find a garbage can, yet the streets were so clean. Literally zero public garbage cans in the subway, on the streets, etc. We wondered what locals did with their garbage if they were out and about lol.

Happy lunar new year!

dont worry bout sounding americanized bro. there are a lot of filipinos who sound weird speaking in tagalog. there are those who sound bisaya, sound batangeno, sound anything. focus on just speaking it fluently.

I'm super proud about Chloe Kim's success, as a Korean, pretty much whenever any Korean is successful, be it Korean - any country in the world, the motherland and Koreans worldwide likes to claim them. What I found interesting was that there seems to be a sentiment among the younger generation in Korea feels like "Don't claim her, if she grew up here she'd be stuck studying 24/7 and captive to the system, she's successful because she is American". This may not be how most feel though.

To me this speaks to how rapidly the current millennial generation both here and there has changed and the gap is widening in so many ways. I was talking to a nephew about her success and how good it was to see a Korean achieve success. His response gave me the impression that the common Korean heritage meant very little to him, with no feeling of connection or bond whatsoever. But he also made me see that my definition of being "Korean" is far different from his being an "American" of Korean heritage.

I don't know all the details but apparently some NBC/CBS commentator spewed some nonsense about how Korea owes it's fast growth and modernization to the Japanese colonization :evil::smh::stoneface:  and many are grateful........I asked him how he felt about that, it was clear he had no idea (not surprised because his parents know very little) and it was not too different from any other Imperialistic colonization in history. Sigh.

I've always been really curious how other Asian- Americans felt about the colonial history and how that plays role in today's respective cultures.

Sorry for the dissertation , I'm just bored after taking all the Ls on this week's releases

Waddup, kababayan! Anyway, this may be tricky depending on how you want BROADEN your Pinoy vocabulary since most are rock/love/pop songs. Usually it's more of practicing with Tagalog-speakers to get yourself familiarized with words and expressions. I have a Fil-Am friend here in Boston that had trouble putting words together and fluent speakers like my friends and I helped him by having convos in some TagLish (Tagalog and English) until he was comfortable enough to sew up sentences. Though he still had an American accent (understandable), we'd now have convos in Tagalog. It's totally cool if you feel uncomfortable or shy about mispronouncing some words/sentences, we all go through it at some point. At least you're putting in time and effort to LEARN about the Pinoy language

I'm sure you have friends/relatives that have access to TFC or anything related to Pinoy networks which can point out some of the pop culture trends that may help you.

(Song - Artists)
El Bimbo - Eraserheads - anything they released became classics
Hallelujah - Bamboo
Oo & Tadhana- Up Dharma Down
Torete - Moonstar 88
Huling Sayaw - Kamikazee
Mga Kababayan - Francis M

Other notable bands/singers - Parokya Ni Edgar, Rivermaya, APO Hiking Society, Side-A, True Faith, Itchyworms, Urbandub, Spongecola, Gary Valenciano, Yeng Constantino, etc.)

(Pinoy hiphop is still a toss up for me because it's sounds weird and some are forced - imagine Migos or other mumble rappers but in Tagalog. But there are rappers like Gloc-9 that put out good songs so yeah)

These are some of the songs on top of my head that can help you. But if you're looking for nursery rhymes like "Bahay Kubo" or "Leron Leron Sinta" then that's a different ball game and I think you might want to ask your parents or other old folks about that

I hope this helps!

Yeah that's understandable. The problem too though is that I've got no one to talk Tagalog to :lol Salamat po.

Ano ba Pare! Yeah see just like what you said about your friend, I speak Taglish. I can speak Tagalog enough to get by if I really had to but it's just that some words I completely blank out so then I say the English word. My main goal though is to learn more words so that I can speak Tagalog fluently. I legit have thought about getting TFC but it would be a waste because I'm not watching the dramas and the game shows are corny so forget that. I'd rather learn more words through songs because at least I'd like the music. Them Pinoy love songs just know how to get to me :lol I've heard Pinoy Rap and Rock and it just doesn't sound too good but I think I just haven't found the right group/artist. Idk if you ever heard of Bambu but he's a Pinoy rapper from LA he's dope I mess with him but he doesn't rap in Tagalog but in one track he does and he kills it. If you can recommend me some Pinoy Love /RnB songs that'd be best. Salamat pare!

I was more referring to the fact that if she wasn't out there claiming gold medals for America, America would just view her as another immigrant (despite her being born here) who's probably good at Math and mediocre at sport. It's the typical "I'm from California", "No, where are you really from?" nonsense.

Maybe being from NY, I don’t really experience that. People understand the concept of Asian-American.

I think the commentator said how every korean looks up to japan for modernization and uses them as an example. People have agreed with what he said except the “every korean” part made people mad.

Yea I may be speaking out of terms here as I grew up in New Zealand then spent a bit of time in Australia. I'll never forget those days of school where kids would tell me my lunch made up of dumplings and other Chinese food were disgusting and strange. Spent 20 years in NZ with a full blown NZ accent yet people still imply I'm a foreigner. NZ is probably one of the most open minded and least racist countries in the world, but it almost seems like they default to thinking not white = not kiwi. This is why I always still get a strong sense of "This is my true home" whenever I go back to Taiwan. That's the only place I can truly feel fully accepted no matter where I go.
