Asian Culture Discussion Thread

For anyone based in Cali, how big is the dance scene out there?

I see all these crews competing at VIBE, World of Dance, Bridge, etc.

San Jose has hundreds of Filipino and Indian dance groups. There's a lot of rival crews and drama :lol

Wasn’t there a dance group from UCI that made it on ABDC?

That's a vague question b/c I believe there was more than group that made it to ABDC that was based out of UCI (I could be wrong, but hell......all these dance groups are ******* close with each other).

Kaba Modern.

that was probably the most famous/prestigious one at UCI

a lot of teams tho

How many of you can cook??

Like traditional dishes

Filipino here. My three go-to meals I cook are Adobo, Sinigang, and Tinola. Though the sourness of my Sinigang varies depending on the kind of ingredients available in our pantry or my overall mood

One thing's for sure is that meats here in the US are bigger (for obvious, genetically modified reasons) compared to those sold in the Philippines.

It's hard being on a strict diet knowing the kinds of food serve in my home but I'm doing my best! But I'm a sucker for noodles like Pho, Ramen, and Laksa from time to time.

All our Asian cultures (American and homeland) is so about the food huh. I like how this thread flows from food, serious business/news topic of the day, back in the day stories, racism, social media hotties, trends then back to food real quick >D

I rarely eat out at Korean places, don't get me started on the ayce kbbq, these days..mostly because I can make most of the menu at home, and the wife's food is bomb. Oddly, when I'm back in Korea, except for the first night eating with my parents at home, and then in laws, its street food, restaurants, drinking and eating up to right before boarding the flight back.

True. But they been living like that for generations and been doing just fine. I mean, it was their way of thinking that allowed them to raise a family and give you opportunity that people can only dream about. They have to be right somewhere... Look how far our ancestors came.
I didn't say anything about their right to be somewhere. There's nobody I respect more than my parents. But they can also be totally wrong about certain topics. Example: You have to eat rice everyday.

Yeah, they're the biggest as I could remember. I could've swore there was another on that show, but like I said.........there was a **** ton that came of dance groups that came out of the SoCal area on ABDC that I get them confused every once in awhile.

But I'd be the last person to complain about that, since I live in the Houston area that has like 5-6 dance groups all close too each other (SoReal Cru being one of them).

That's uncalled for. Bruce deserved to be canned cuz of his ignorance.

When I was in middle school, it felt so weird when my teachers tended to me more often than my other classmates because I was a "foreign student" during classes. Like, I know English isn't my first language and I didn't fully understand the racial undertones/implications of being different in America, but I was raised to value everyone equally and to face challenges however possible.

Adaptation was/is still crucial for me and the only way to keep up is to have a "show 'em up" mentality, so in those years, I had A+ averages and collected certificates. Even had a complete attendance in my two years in middle school (my mom thought sickness was for the weak )

They put my sister in ESL when she was in grade school. English was the only language she knew. My parents found out a year or two later and were mad they just assumed she didn’t speak English because of our last name.

I plan a 10-12 hour layover in Seoul for most of my Asia trips exactly for these activities  A trip to Kyochon in Hongdae is a must on every trip, although I skipped it on my most recent trip to Jakarta since there's a large Korean population there as well as Kyochon/many other restaurants.

Damn i couldn't imagine growing up somewhere like that.

My high school had literally 30 or so white students in the entire school. This was also a 4A HS.

I went to middle school in San Jose; our yearbooks had 3-4 pages of just Nguyens,Trans, and Patels :rofl:I think there were maybe 10-15 white people in our entire class.

High school was a HUGE culture shock to me, since my parents sent me to a private high school in the rich white side of town. No more DBZ t shirts, lightning gel, and rubber banded jeans anymore; it was now Hollister, cargo shorts, and floppy surfer hair everywhere. The handful of Filipinos and I were basically outcasts that formed our own hypebeast crew

Bruh, they put me in ESL in elementary school too. I was born in the US. I was a shy/quiet kid so maybe that’s why. Me and my baby sis had the same tutor. I remember on our last day we had a root beer float party with me and some Mexican kids.

Oh yea and I won most of the classroom spell-a-thons we had

I was in ESL too and I spoke fluent English, I just trouble with my Ls and Rs at the time since I was learning English from my mom and her Korean friends. I also had to take speech class.

I actually enjoyed it though, not only did I learn more about my culture but I learned about the culture of my classmates in there who were from Germany, Puerto Rico, etc.

I still remember how to sing a couple Christmas songs in German and Spanish from ESL.

Hearing everyone in here saying they were chosen for ESL when they were younger just 'cuz they were either shy OR couldn't pronounce certain words at the same rate as other kids and the fact that they're "asian," now it is making me realize that I kinda got screwed as well as a kid.

Actually, I think I got the worst of the barrel. I was so shy during my pre-school years at the age of 4 that I ended up in "Special Ed" for kindergarten just 'cuz I was shy, and they put me in a few of ESL sessions at least 3-4 times a year between kindergarten to 3rd grade just 'cuz the school district thought my "shyness" was linked to the fact that I had to Filipino-immigrant parents (they were still at green card status at the time, and they didn't become full American citizens until I was halfway into 4th grade).

Crazy that it is all starting to make sense now that I'm hearing how the rest of you guys ended up in ESL early on.....wow

You know how even if you have a 90% American accent, you still have a 10% "foreign" accent based on the neighborhood you grew up in? I grew up in a mostly Latino and Asian area, so I sometimes slip up and have a slightly "different" accent and speech pattern that white people sometimes ask me about. "Did I hear an accent? Where are you from?" while my Asian/Latino/foreign friends don't think anything of it.

It ALMOST landed me in ESL at my private elementary school until my parents threatened to pull me out of there (eventually I got expelled from there for bad behavior anyway, but still ) Sorry I don't sound like Connor and Tyler :rolleyes

Kyochon, man haven't been in a few years. They used to have a few here in Ktown/Orange County but I think other chicken places took over.

Hongdae dude. You must have some good times there. I went to HS near there and alot of fun times for me during the 90s. I didnt go back until the mid 2000s and was blown away by the change that was setting in (clubs and all that). Then went again in the early 2010s.....and head exploded haha.

Oh yeah, I definitely have good times in Hongdae. Last time I went, I was out until 5 AM, took a 1 hour nap, and headed to my 8:30 AM flight to Tokyo with a massive headache :smh:

The one club I went to was strange. I dressed formally like I do here, and when I went in, everyone else was dressed like an LA gang banger from the early 2000s (this was in 2016 by the way). Just a ton of red and blue LA hats, white tall tees, bandanas, etc. everywhere. My Korean friend told me that "This is where all the rich kids come to fulfill their hood fantasies and rebel against their parents"

I usually go to this bar called Thursday Party; it has a bunch of douchebag American military members on most nights, but it also has the most girls open to meeting foreigners...so yeah

It makes me sad that there’s no Korean wing place near me. Don’t wanna deal with traffic and driving 45-60 minutes to get some.

Anyone do the 23 & Me thing? Amazon was having a discount on them but I didn’t bother to check the price. I’ll buy one eventually. My aunt told me my great grandfather was from spain. I’m also wondering if there’s some chinese from my mom’s side of the family.
