I could see Lowe possibly leaving to join up with Simmons.. Before he was writing on the one section of the si site that I can't remember, but you had to go look for him

That was a great blog to follow. Lowe would write about every little thing NBA related and provide links to other great articles.

I don't even bother with SI's NBA coverage anymore (even though they've got reputable coverage). The only thing I check out are Lee Jenkins articles and Richard Deitsch media reports.

Lowe is boring but he is excellent at what he does.. He was good with Simmons and jalen cause it didn't fall on him to be entertaining.. Or when he has a good guest who can provide a little more than the just the in depth basketball stuff, it's good.. Like either of the van gundy's

They are still two guys, who are AMAZING at what they do, that would not be easy to replaced. I think they are more of an asset (now that Simmons has jumped ship) than you are giving them credit for. Same goes for Greenwald.

Not about being good at what they do.. I know that Lowe and Abrams are great. The problem is that they aren't really generating much in terms of revenue for the company. We tend to overvalue them as fans. Lowe really benefits from having ESPN as his platform. As someone else mentioned, he was writing on an obscure part of the website for SI before his gig now.

I think it's more of a point of ESPN not wanting them to leave to go over with Simmons. It's also irrelevant that he once wrote for SI. His work is respected, and he and Abrams are two of the best that ESPN has to offer.

From Sports Guy AOL blog, to potentially ripping ESPN to shreds, Bill would become a hero for that alone.

Would LOVE to see him rebuild a newer/better Grantland and create just an entirely new site on the web, with all major sports covered + pop culture/entertainment. Articles, podcasts, news, everything.

And that's the thing. Thinking about what ESPN has become...which at times is nothing more than a tabloid with awful articles, terrible on-air "talent," etc., Simmons could put together something that's the antithesis to what ESPN is.

Obviously, ESPN will be king due to the money they're bringing in...but if we're talking about the potential to have great quality over click-bait/low-hanging fruit, then Simmons could be a huge draw for many people in the industry looking for a change.

Imagine pulling Matt Moore and Lowe and Woj for NBA news/writing.

And getting the guy from SmartFootball or another guy from Twitter that is tremendous with X and O's who's name escapes me. He does All 22 write ups. Even Peter King would work.

And then gets someone like Stark, or Rob Neyer, or the guys that run the call hurts/helps from Twitter feeds.

Mix in his connections to Kimmel, and Corrolla, and other Pop Culture types, he could easily assemble an All Star team of information, news, articles. And still have podcasts and such.

ESPN couldn't beat them with Steven A, Skip Bayless, PTI, etc. No way.

The readers don't overvalue them, they value them.

It's a systemic issue within the company / the inability to properly recognize that, so they undervalue the creative decisions that could easily be turned into revenue generators and then funneled through Lowe, Abrams, etc. as the necessary jump-off points to profit accordingly. Need to get the best out of your talent, and the first step in doing that is recognizing who that is by nailing down who the readers think that is -> build the foundation around them that will make the money, and then the money will come.

We're the minority though. Most people don't have the interest or time to read those people even if they had a bigger push. Most sports fans take in the fast food version of sports media that is ESPN.com, SC, First Take etc. I believe even Deadspin has a greater readership.

Apples and oranges. Deadspin gets more page views due to their easily digestible, quick-hitter stuff. I can't imagine their long form stuff does any better than Grantland, and probably worse, overall. Deadspin's most popular post of the last week is just a video (accompanied by a paragraph) of Nick Chubb's knee injury. Grantland doesn't do that stuff (or work on Saturdays for that matter lol).
