Probably because of the reflective thread woven in. They're definitely not standard SB laces, they look like SB laces after they've been used everyday for five years.

I didn’t think mids had back tabs?

They don't...I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's just super thin in the back compared to other mids? It just looks weird to me.
