Isn’t a panther a Jaguar?

If you allow me to nerd out for a second, a jaguar is this species:

In parts of the US, a panther is the common name for this species, the cougar or mountain lion:

But it gets confusing because worldwide, melanistic individuals of both the jaguar and leopard species are sometimes referred to as black panthers:

And on top of all that, there's also the Florida Panther. Which was long thought to be a subspecies of cougar, but then it was determined it wasn't, it's just a cougar, but it is a scientifically recognized unique population of cougars:

big cats gotta be the most regal and beautiful creatures on this planet. took my nephew to the zoo this past weekend and geeked the **** out over the tigers.

i have a house cat and she’s a hella loyal creature. but i frequently wonder what the hell it would be like if she were the size of a leopard

I agree there were a few bad looks back in the day but.... anyone over the age of 12 cannot possibly think today's era is better overall.

The old era was "how can we create an identity." Then these last 10-15 years era is "how can we come up with something the kids will ask for Christmas."

Well you picked some of the worst unis, but those aren’t even the current Vikings and Jags looks.

Big cats are by far the scariest animals to see in the wild, I've never been more shook in my working life than seeing one across the hillside. I'm cool for the rest of my life

My Dad was a big hunter and he told me a story about Elk hunting somewhere in North or NE Washington and was in his tree stand when he locked eyes with a Cougar who was in a tree about 30 yards away...he alleged that they were staring at eachother for 45 minutes....so, probably closer to 10 or 15. Cougar lost interest and eventually dipped.

I probably would've shot it out of fear right away...sadly.
