2015-2016 San Antonio Spurs Thread: Tim Duncan Retires After 19 Seasons

Heartbreaking loss this year but I hope Duncan and Ginobili stay for one more year so we can give it another shot.

Duncan seems to have found the fountain of youth so I want him to continue playing for the time being.

What do you guys think we can do to improve for next season?

First and foremost like you said Timmy has to come back and I think he does on a 1 year 5M type deal. He doesnt want or deserve to go out like that. Manu can do the same if its for like 3Ms I wont mind it.

Danny Green is the first question mark of the offseason, hes gonna get a good offer of 10M for multiple years on the open market and I doubt the Spurs will be wiling to go that high for him. I also dont think he's really thinking about not taking money for the sake of the program again, at some point you gotta just go chase the money he wont be playing forever and doesnt have LeBron level money.

Kawhi is getting maxed out, that is a foregone conclusion

On to the Free Agency talk, I never thought Marc Gasol was a realistic option for the team, in terms of "Tim Duncan replacements" it was always Kevin Love or LMA in my mind. With the Kevin Love injury being what its become I wouldnt want the Spurs to take a risk on him like that, and IDK how serious these LMA rumors are. I would take him, but I woudlnt go out and spend the farm on him, and who knows if he even wants to go there. With a first round exist, albeit an atypical one, it may be hard to sell him on a winning blueprint in San Antonio at the moment.

I still want another big, I dont think I'll ever stop wanting one. Its been too long since Tim Duncan has really had a guy next to him who can be labeled a defensive presence.

I can see us making some sort of splash in the offseason though, Tim cant play forever and someone needs to be paired with Kawhi, but his deal should come at the end of all of this being that we could go over the cap for it.

Crazy how the best player on the team is a 39 year old guy who's been doing this for almost 20 years. I can remember at max 3 years where Tim Duncan wasnt the best player on this team and those were the knee injury years before he really figured out how to play with it. He really is ageless.

Disappointing season for the Spurs

Kawhi Leonard has earned the max, he needs to get better though

We should target LA or Love

Let Danny Green and Bonner walk

Manu should retire

Popovich rode Parker when he should have played Patty

This offseason is huge for the Spurs

I dont know about Love anymore. Kind of dont want to take a flier on a guy who's going to be out for that long with that shoulder injury, unless he really waits until August to sign a deal with somebody. Before this injury I thought it was a sure thing that he leaves Cleveland but now its probably his best bet.

Its Kevin Love's non shooting shoulder, I don't know how it will affect him
I still wouldnt want to chance it, but I dont have the medical resources to really judge anything. I was thinking about FA's this afternoon and JJ. Barea came to mind and even Monta Ellis. But the issue with Monta is that he's probably going to want more than Danny Green does, but I think he would fit in great there. He's already flourishing in a similar styled offense and there would be even more lane space in San Antonio. That would be great man.

I've read murmurs that Splitter could be on the trading blocks in order to accomodate a Gasol or a LA.  What was his deal? 22m or something?

When Splitter was healthy he was such an integral part of our inside game.  The High Lows with Timmy/Diaw and his effort and hustle is an intangible asset.

I haven't watched LA play throughout the season, although I did take note of his notable offensive power - not so much his defense?  I think he'll move away from Portland, he's 30 and not getting any younger.  I feel Parker/Kawhi/Timmy/Diaw is more attractive than Lillard and co.  I've read reports that his mother is sick and wants to relocate to Texas to be by her side.

I think Timmy will do another season or 2 - he's always maintained that once he isn't as effective he'll hang up his boots.  The man's still a top 5 PF in the league today at 39.  He's really really ageless.  He's that kind of dude you look up to and he's a safety net.  He's going to come back!

Ginobili is another story.  I get the vibe he's still got something to prove and still wants to compete.  I think he'll be a priority to sign if he does decide to come back and RC et al agree on a salary.

I hope we resign DG.  He's such a great defender and a formidable duo with Kawhi.  His greatness weakness is being forced to dribble and lots of teams have exploited that.  You can argue that DG won't be the same outside of the San Antonio system?  I think he's a priority and an integral part.  I hope we can agree on deal with him.

Bellineli, Joseph are also question marks.  If you're San Antonio you want Joseph as a back-up PG, if you're Joseph you begin to wonder whether or not you'll crack the no. 2 spot behind TP9. Patty Mills is such a spark off the bench, instant offense, but Joseph is more steady.  Again I don't know what will happen there.  Not too sure about Bellineli.  He's a defensive liability but an uncanny shooter, AMAZING head fake (amongst the best i've seen) and can shoot of the dribble (unlike DG).  If we can offer him a small salary, why not resign?

I guess the season is long.. 82 games plus the playoffs.  You need guys who fit the system and will grind out wins.

We'll still be contenders next season and it's an exciting time for the Spurs to rejuvenate and re-tool as Pop says.  The last 3 season have been a grind.  Let's get some rest and come up sharper, injury-free and re-motivated.

Splitter being hurt this year really hurt us, and I will admit I turned on him really fast because of it. I've always been a proponent of us getting another big, and Splitter was filling the spot nicely last year, loved how he finished around the rim, never tried to go into guys cause he knew he wasnt athletic enough for that, used the rim as a shield and had a bunch of up and unders. You could tell he jus didnt have it this year, and Baynes unraveled as well.

The PG situation is gonna be weird for sure, both of those guys could be the #2 guy, and while Joseph played well for us especially when Patty was out, after his showing in the playoffs thats Pattys spot to keep.

Fifty pounds of scrap aluminum only cost Richard Ramirez five dollars. It has since turned his house on the South Side of San Antonio into a local landmark.

Ramirez can’t remember exactly when – sometime between 1999 and 2003, he says – that he ran into someone who had a bunch of scrap metal in the flatbed of his truck. They were two-foot-tall metal letters, taken from the signage of a closed-down store. While the man valued his metal at $1 per letter, Ramirez saw inspiration to create a “SPURS” sign for the front of his house.

There wasn’t a letter P, so Ramirez took an extra R, cut off a leg and had himself “SPURS.”

Now, hundreds of fans stop by Pendleton Street to take pictures at every playoff run. A local rapper has shot a music video at the house. A local artist has drawn a painting of the place. And Ramirez is known as “The guy with the Spurs house.”

“Best purchase I ever made,” Ramirez said. “I wanted to show my appreciation for the team and share my pride with everybody. And it’s just brought me all kinds of fun.”

Many San Antonians decorate their houses with Spurs flags and signs, especially once the playoffs begin. Ramirez’s metal Spurs sign may be the city’s most recognized front-gate accessory.

The sign stays up year-round. At Halloween, castle walls surround the sign for trick-or-treaters. At Christmas, the sign gets lights. And when the playoffs get going, flags and banners line the house’s fence as well.

A few years ago, when the Spurs were trailing in a series, Ramirez added a sign that said, “Honk If You Believe.” He hasn’t put the sign back up in years, not that it has stopped fans from honking.

“Police officers will come by to ask me what the score is,” Ramirez said. “Strangers have driven by and stopped to watch the game with us.”

Ramirez, 48, has lived in the house for his entire life. He is there now with his wife, Adriana, and their two children. He doesn’t remember exactly when he put up the sign, but knows it was sometime between the Spurs’ first championship in 1999 and their second title in 2003. Those are the dates he uses to mark time, because he was in his front yard for all the clinching moments.

“The first championship is still my favorite,” he said. “I’ve loved this team ever since I went to my first game at HemisFair Arena when I was 8, and they were still in the ABA. We’ve watched them the whole time. I just remember when they won, I hugged my best friend, and we were grown men in tears.”

Ramirez watches every game in his yard, a couple of feet away from the sign. Back-to-back games get tough on him, since he tries to throw a barbecue for every tip-off. Games also can be tough on anyone watching the game with Ramirez, since he’s a man of superstition.

In the 2007 playoffs, Ramirez’ ritual was to watch every game outdoors and shirtless, with his buddy Paul on his left, his friend “Skittles” on the right and his Spurs hat hanging off the TV.

“We won the title that year, so it worked” he said.

Inside, the house is filled with Spurs bottles, cereal boxes and other memorabilia. Ramirez’s prized possession is a game-worn jersey of his favorite Spur of all-time, Sean Elliott.

A former background vocalist for Tejano singer Eddie Gonzalez, health issues have kept Ramirez at home for the past few years.

But it hasn’t stopped him from being on his front lawn for every game. Ramirez jokes that he can’t go to the AT&T Center for a game, because if he wasn’t at home when the Spurs were playing, his neighbors would be worried.

“He has rough days sometimes,” said his wife, Adriana. “During games though, he comes to life. This is his house, and he made it the Spurs House.”

Bit of a good read here: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ge-would-keep-san-antonio-spurs-dynasty-going

What are thoughts on Kawhi accepting a lower salary? He definitely deserves the max - but as you know it's no secret that players have sacrificed their salary in order to bring back key parts of the team.

We'd need to bring back Green, Bellienli, Joseph, Ginobili (?) and Duncan.

The thought of LA or Gasol is difficult and i'm in favour of keeping Splitter.

The Spurs shouldn't bring Manu and Green back

Kawhi shouldn't take a pay cut

Duncan should be the one taking pay cut

Marco and Cory can come back on reasonable deals

Danny Green is an excellent defender who can lock up most PG/SG's.  I think that alone is worth him signing on again.

Manu is debatable - numbers are down.  But he has an xfactor.  Pay cut.

Starters:

Duncan?

Splitter

Green?

Leonard

Parker

Bench

Ginobili?

Diaw

Bonner?

Baynes

Mills

Joseph?

Ayers

Anderson

Our 2nd unit has no leader without Ginobili..

Manu should come back on a 1 year 3M deal. His production is down but I agree he's been the bench constant. He and Patty Mills moreso Patty can share the load going forward.

I have no doubts that Duncan will also take a paycut, I'm thinking 1 year 5M for him.

Kawhi should take the max or something really really close to it, at this juncture he shouldnt be the one looking to take less money, in a time of rising salary cap and guys who have already had their big pay day. We're prepared to accept that fact and give him the money.

Bonner can go, but everyone else needs to come back.

Yall are being way too sentimental :lol

The Spurs roster needs a major revamping

Manu and Green should go for different reasons

Manu is way past his prime and over priced even he goes down to 3

Green will be super over priced in this market. Offensively he's a good shooter but he cannot create or score off the dribble Hes a good defender mainly against SFs and some SGs.....what good point guards did he lock up?

The Spurs need to start looking for the undervalued players like the Demarre Carroll's or Speights of the NBA not overpay our role players because of sentiment

3M for Manu is hardly an overpay, hes still a high level passer and the offense is predicated on ball movement. I think Green will chase the money though, and I wouldnt blame him. He's going to see 10Ms on the open market and if he can get it then more power to him.

You know who I would really want if we can get him? Monta Ellis, but I know thats a pipe dream and he's going to chase the money.

Green locked up CP3 fairly well, albeit his offense fell through.

I just think at the right price we should resign him.  Can't blame him for chasing money, but his skillset works well in the system.  Rumour's were going around Pop told him he wasn't part of his plans at which he denied this through his twitter account.

I get your point re. being all sentimental, but Manu is critical to the 2nd unit and a fierce competitor.  He's a streaky shooter, pinpoint passer and just has that uncanny nature to his game (that sometimes is frustrating).  But if he were to come back on a reduced salary, you'd be hard pressed to pass up a player of his quality.

With the cap increasing in the coming years, surely we can go after bigger names when we have the space?  Right now it could be a short-term strategy around Timmy and Manu/Leonard.

Latest rumours i've heard stipulate that DIaw/Mills are candidates to be offloaded to make way for LA/Gasol/Millsap.  I'm sure you're all against this.  Diaw = IQ, Mills = instant offense.

Let's keep this going fellas - i'm always keen to chat about The Spurs.  Even if we don't agree, I ain't got nothing but love for Spurs supporters.

I would be angry if Mills and Diaw leave, even if came with the addition of LMA/Gasol (I want no parts of Millsap) for exactly the reasons you listed. Both of those guys are must keeps to me, besides Tim Duncan, they were the two best players for the Spurs in the post season.

Ewww i cant see popovich getting along with monta

Eh IDK. I've watched enough of the Mavs these last couple of years to see a new coachable Monta Ellis. Will he totally buy in to the Pop system at first, the yanking of guys at the first boneheaded play they make which Monta is good for a couple? Probably not, but if he had half a season with it and us, then he would be fine.

Only person that should be let go is Bonner, defensive liability

I honestly don't see Manu leaving anywhere.

I would like to keep Danny, but dude is easily replaceable, so no big deal if he walks.

Diaw and Mills I hope resign, too important to the bench

If i'm the Spurs i'm targeting LMA, possibly Brook Lopez (just have to stay healthy), i'd even try my luck at Dragic, (Tony is slowing down and I think Dragic can flow in pop system)

I would say Marc Gasol, but Gasol already expressed he loved Memphis and see it less likely he will go anywhere.

Khris Middleton would also be a good pick up, but I doubt he sign with us.

Tony Parker needs to pick up the slack.  His mindset is definitely there, but his body isn't quite on the same level (injuries = fatigue).

Bonner is loyal, i'm not too fussed.  Great 3pt shooter, plays Z-bo pretty well.. wouldn't be surprised if resigned.

Monta Ellis is a great 1-on-1 player, super athletic, gets to the hole when he wants.  Not too sure if he'd fit in the system or what his attitude is towards the 'team' mantra SAS predicates.

Haven't heard of any new rumours so far..

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2015/05/15/2014-15-season-review-manu-ginobili/#30048101=0

Manu Ginobili
SG (6-6, 210), 13th season

2013-14: 22.8 mpg, 12.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.0 spg, 46.9 FG%, 20.0 PER, plus 12.9 net rating
2014-15: 22.7 mpg, 10.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.0 spg, 42.6 FG%, 16.2 PER, plus 9.6 net rating

For a guard on the verge of his 38th birthday, who has suffered a total of 40 known injuries in his career, Manu Ginobili played pretty damn well in his 14th NBA season. Unfortunately for him and the Spurs, it’s a bottom-line business, and nobody takes qualifications into account on the court.

A Spurs staffer said privately that Ginobili is only good in about one out of eight games any more. Or at least good as we’ve come to expect out of Ginobili, rather than the slightly above-average performer he generally was this season. That’s a harsh assessment, but not completely off the mark. He was somewhere between bad and ineffective in probably half his 70 outings, culminating with a first-round series against the L.A. Clippers in which he shot a miserable 34.9 percent. (To be fair, Ginobili also led the Spurs in assists.)

His true shooting percentage of 54.4 was the second-lowest of his career, while his 5.0 turnovers per 100 possessions were a career high. Ginobili’s Player Efficiency Rating dropped accordingly, to his worst since his rookie season in 2002-03. With trends like that, Ginobili isn’t just wondering how much desire he has left to play one more year, but how effective he’ll be if he does eschew retirement.

Of course, the Spurs will be happy to have him back for his impeccable intangibles alone. But, after having bounced back so strongly in 2013-14 from his mediocre postseason the previous year, it’s doubtful Ginobili has another vengeance season left in him. Or any seasons at all, for that matter, what with the lure of retirement calling after one of the most illustrious careers in Spurs history.

3 Million Dollars is still a great deal for what Manu Ginobili is brining to the court. Anything more than that then I will have to question it. He's still the best surveyor of the floor we have on the Roster, and his main PnR guy Splitter was hurt, and that hurts him.

I will gladly have Manu back for the right price.

50/50 with Manu... he did say that his decision would also depend on Timmy's (who's certain to come back).

It must be tough playing in the NBA day in and day out at the age of 38, a family and an everlasting legacy.

If we do resign him, I wouldn't expect glorifying numbers - just leadership and being able to control the 2nd unit.
