SMH at what's happening to Sergio. I don't want him weight drained fighting PBF or Manny. He's super entertaining and talented but IMO he loses his advantages at 150.

I know I'm a couple weeks late on that Mayweather/Ortiz fight, but I was just barely able to finally catch it a couple nights ago on a re-air.

I knew about what happened the night it happened; just never actually saw it for myself till a couple nights ago. And when I heard about it the night it happened... from friends texting me, twitter, quick headlines on sports sites... my INITIAL opinion was "Hey, the bell rang, they touched gloves, ref backed off... it was go time," and I had no problem with Mayweather.

But when I saw it myself, it seemed like a cheap shot. Not illegal by ANY means, not dirty at ALL, but not classy I guess.

So that's my opinion on that. MY QUESTION, for those of you who maybe follow Ortiz: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T HE GET HIS HANDS UP AFTER THE FIRST HIT?! They did the whole hugging thing, they touched gloves, the ref backed off, and BOOOM, Floyd got him, and got him CLEAN. But then there was a pause... by Mayweather AND Ortiz... and Mayweather came in again to finish things off.

But during that pause, Ortiz looks away, hands down, and seems to be thinking something like 'Alright, it's like that? You gotta cheap shot me now?," and while he's apparently thinking that... BOOOM... again.

What the hell? Who does that? What professional boxer... no, no... what fighter on ANY stage ANYWHERE... stands there with their hands down after getting punched in the damn face?!

I was almost mad at him.

I know you guys have probably talked about all that ad nauseum. Just wanted to throw my thoughts out there now that I've seen the fight.

Protect yourself at all times and stop trying to hug and kiss the guy. You hugged him a few times why do it again? Besides, throwing rabbit punches and intentional headbutts is a lot dirtier and more classless. Ref clearly said fight.

No, I completely agree with all that. Like I said, I wouldn't even call what Floyd did 'dirty'. How can it be dirty if it was completely legal? It can't be... and since it was legal, then in my mind, it can't be dirty.

I couldn't have done what Floyd did. OK, last night, I'm playing ball, dude guarding me loses his shoe. That's happened to all of us before, right? We've had opponents come out their shoes, and we've all come out our shoes. I sure the hell have. Well he lost his shoe... and I held up. I kept dribbling and looked at him and said "I'll wait." I could have most definitely had free lane, but nah, couldn't do it.

I can hear people now. "

@ you comparing your little pickup game to a professional boxing match"

I'm not. I'm talking about seeing an advantage you didn't earn, and pouncing on it. Like if I would have CROSSED dude out of his shoes, yeah, I'd go to the cup without feeling bad about it at ALL. I earned that advantage over him. But dude just loses his shoes in the course of a game? Hey, it happens, and I'll wait.

Like if I were boxing, and the fight is still on after I've got dude stunned and stammering, I'd continue to bust his head till the ref said stop or the bell rang. I earned that advantage; his staggering all over the place is because of me, so I'm'a keep going.

Like I said, though, I have no problem w/ Floyd claiming victory here... and I can't stand the dude. I can't stand arrogance... but I'll defend his victory on this one whenever the conversation comes up. He won, fair and square. Period. No cheating. Nothing illegal. Well within the rules of the fight he was fighting.

Just saying I couldn't have done that, just like I can't blow by a dude who lost his shoe for no apparent reason while guarding me.

But if the guy is punching your behind your head all night while he holds you and is pretty much leaping off the ground trying to headbutt you, why should Floyd show him any kind of respect or sportsmanship? That's the main issue to me. I understand your analogy but this guy was clearly starting to get flustered and wanted to foul to get advantages. Ortiz was doing all that because PBF was picking him apart and he was getting frustrated. Would you want to hug the guy who just busted cuts open inside and outside of your mouth with an intentional headbutt? Floyd embraced him once but the dude keeps coming forward arms open to hug him again after the ref clearly says to fight.

Actually... you're absolutely right I could, SHWAP.

I thought of that as soon as I hit reply.

"Wonder if I could blow by a dude who lost his shoe if I'm in an NBA championship."

Ummmm... yes, yes I could.
laugh.gif

So yeah, that definitely makes it a different situation altogether; that was a championship bout.

Good point.

I still feel like I would like to THINK that if a dude lost his shoe in a championship game I was playing in, I'd hold up like I did last night... but... nah.

Not for the respect of the opponent, but for himself. Self-respect would be my reasoning. And I want to reiterate; I'm not even mad at Floyd.

I feel like in a split second, Floyd thought of 3 things: #1- guard down, #2- dude been cheap shotting him the whole fight, and #3- now he's hugging and hugging and hugging like crazy. I feel like in a split second, he realized all 3 of those things and decided "Eff this, we're done here," so he ended it.

Cortez said and made the motion "Let's go!" but then looked at the timekeeper. In a common circumstance a referee would get two boxers together, put his hand between them and yell "Box!" Which Cortez never did. I feel like maybe that's what Ortiz was waiting for and he didn't think the fight was resuming. So when the left hook came and Ortiz looked at Cortez he was expecting Floyd to be penalized like he was. Then the right cross came and the ten count was on. Not illegal, but definitely dirty. Dirty doesn't have to be illegal, it just has to be disrespectful.

To relate it to basketball it's like jumpball. Referee gets two players, makes sure theyre ready, and tosses the ball in the air...under normal circumstances, of course. Cortez didn't gather them for a jumpball, he just kinda let the ball roll and let whoever get it first keep possession.

Still don't know why Ortiz was all smiles though. If you beat the cash cow in boxing you become the cash cow, Floyd knows that best.

We've seen for years how childish/mentally unstable Ortiz is, I honestly think he got caught up in the moment and was too dumb to realize the fight was back on since Cortez didn't SAY anything, even tho he motioned to resume. I don't really care for either fighter personally, but it was entirely Ortiz's fault, and he got what he deserved. It's not like the guy fell out of his sneaker like the situation you described, it's like a guy fouled u on the last play, and is all smiles and cant stop trying to shake hands hug u, and apologize, even though u started playing again. Are you really going to wait for that clown to stop smiling and trying to hug u, or are u just going to start playing again? Taking into account that he tried to flagrantly foul u 10 seconds ago, ur just going to wait?

The only reason I have a slight problem with what Mayweather did is that he tries to say so often that he cares about having good fights, entertaining fans, and here he just took an easy way out and it was over. He was composed and he didn't have to go out like that if he truly wanted to give a good fight. I remember after seeing that ending, I felt like it proved absolutely nothing about either fighter. It proved Floyd could outbox Ortiz for 2-3 rds, I guess. If I paid for that ppv, I would have been pissed. But even with that in mind, the whole situation wouldn't have happened if Ortiz wasn't so dumb. The sad part is, I think it would've been an entertaining fight. It was somewhat one-sided to that point, but we havent seen Floyd fight someone his size in his prime in a long time (I think Zab was probably the last time), and I think Ortiz was strong and reckless enough to actually barge forward and make it into a fight, like he did right before the headbutt and landed a combo on the ropes. Unfortunately, we only got to see 3 rounds.

Yeah, you can't come away as a victor from that fight and talk about how you just want to win good fights.

As far as proving anything is concerned, I definitely think Floyd proved 2 things: 1- he could outbox Ortiz, and 2- he can knock Ortiz out w/ 2 hits if Ortiz has his hands down.
laugh.gif

I mean, that first one's legit. But that 2nd one? Who the hell really wants to make sure people know that?
laugh.gif

And Ortiz proved he's delusional.

That's everything I gathered from the fight, and this is the first fight I've actually seen from them. I know about both of them, definitely Floyd more than Ortiz, but this is the first time I've seen either of them, and I watched everything from pre-bout setup/interviews to postfight aftermath.

I learned that Floyd can outbox Ortiz, Floyd can knock Ortiz out w/ 2 hits if Ortiz has his hands down, and Ortiz is delusional.
