Pac-10 says refs erred by not calling a penalty on Notre Dame's fake field goal vs. USC


WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pacific-10 Conference says its officials erred in not calling a penalty on Notre Dame for a fake field goal in last Saturday's game between the Fighting Irish and USC.

The Trojans won the game 34-27.

The trick play resulted in a 25-yard gain that set up Notre Dame's first touchdown. Dave Cutaia, the Pac-10's coordinator of officials, says a foul should have been called for using substitutions to deceive. The Fighting Irish should have been pushed back 15 yards and the down repeated.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis would not talk specifically about the Pac-10's assertion that a penalty should have been called. He did say that he let officials know before the game that he intended to use the "kitchen sink" as far as plays.

The Notre Dame/USC game had some terrible calls, leave it at that, people are too quick to toss the homer card. Glad we got out with a victory.

I could have sworn that it was a Big East crew working the game, guess Pac 10 officials were just being Pac 10 officials.

There is no such thing as a moral victory on the field in college football, so Notre Dame's 34-27 loss to USC last Saturday simply is another "L" in the loss column. But there are moral victories on the recruiting side of things and a close loss at the hands of USC following back-to-back blowouts in 2007 and '08 allowed the Irish to improve their standing with numerous big-time recruits. [/td] [/tr][tr][td]Notre Dame helped solidify its status with Chris Martin.[/td] [/tr][/table]With 18 official visitors on hand and numerous prospects on unofficial visits, the Irish increased their chances with some of the biggest names.
Let's start with the five-star prospects. The nation's No. 1 player, offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall, enjoyed his visit and sources say Notre Dame now is in the top three along with Ohio State and USC. Minnesota has faded in a big way, Florida and Oklahoma are long shots and distance could be a factor with USC. This could come down to a two-team battle between the Irish and Buckeyes. But Henderson still has visits left with USC and others.

Defensive end Chris Martin of Aurora (Colo.) Grandview is committed to Notre Dame, and the game against USC solidified that status. Sources say Florida is No. 2 on Martin's list but that the Gators aren't charging hard. Visits to USC and Cal are possible, and with Martin, anything can happen. But as long as Notre Dame finishes strong and Charlie Weis remains in charge, Martin should sign with the Irish in the end.

Sources say cornerback Lamarcus Joyner of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas liked his Notre Dame visit better than his visit to Ohio State and the Irish have improved their chances. But the Buckeyes remain the team to beat. Ohio State has had the lead for a while now and there are more forces working for the Buckeyes than for Notre Dame. Florida and Florida State also are in the mix and can't be counted out.

Things are suddenly looking good for Notre Dame when it comes to wide receiver Kyle Prater of Hillside (Ill.) Proviso West, the nation's No. 2 prospect. The Irish weren't in the mix until recently, but word has it that Prater's family would prefer he stay closer to home so they can watch him play; that means Notre Dame and Illinois have a chance at swinging him away from USC. Prater committed to the Trojans in early September and apparently will take his official visit to L.A. the weekend of Nov. 28. Sources say Oklahoma is now almost out of the picture and that his recruitment will come down to how he likes his officials to Illinois (Oct. 31, when the Illini play host to Michigan), Notre Dame (Nov. 21, when the Irish play host to Connecticut) and USC (Nov. 28, when the Trojans play host to UCLA).

[/td] [/tr][tr][td]Notre Dame is coming after Miami commitment Louis Nix.[/td] [/tr][/table]Numerous four-star prospects are higher on the Irish than they were before. Miami commitment Louis Nix of Jacksonville Raines, one of the nation's top defensive tackles, now is considered by some to be a lean to the Irish and could de-commit unless UM coaches can reel him back in. Illinois commitment Corey Cooper, a defensive back from Hillwood (Ill.) Proviso East, is rumored to be ready to de-commit and choose the Irish in the next couple of weeks, something that would help with Prater. And Notre Dame is in much better shape for offensive linemen Brandon Linder of St. Thomas Aquinas (seems to be a Miami-ND battle) and James Stone of Nashville Maplewood (Alabama, Auburn and Notre Dame battle).
Notre Dame still is on the outside looking in for running backs Giovanni Bernard of St. Thomas Aquinas and Jordon James of Corona (Calif.) High, but running back isn't a priority and Notre Dame likely won't push for either. Bernard is looking at Tennessee, Florida State, Oklahoma State and Oregon State; James is thought to be favoring Arizona, California and Washington. The Irish are a long shot for defensive backs Cody Riggs of St. Thomas Aquinas (a Florida-Georgia battle), Dietrich Riley of La Canada (Calif.) St. Francis (USC lean) and Joshua Shaw of Palmdale (Calif.) High (Ohio State-USC battle).

This weekend, when Notre Dame plays host to Boston College, defensive tackle Beau Allen of Minnetonka (Minn.) High and linebacker Christian Jones of Casselberry (Fla.) Lake Howell. Even if Nix were to commit to Notre Dame, the Irish still would take Allen, as they need big bodies on defense. Jones is considered a lean to Florida State.

If Notre Dame continues to play well and finishes the season strong (i.e., in a BCS bowl), they could have a shot at the No. 1 class overall. If that happens, this past weekend will have been the key.

Second thoughts

Chula Vista (Calif.) Eastlake safety Tony Jefferson is a UCLA commitment, but will take visits. Jefferson will take an official visit to Miami on Nov. 6 and also is scheduling an official visit to Michigan. But the most interesting situation is with Florida.

[/td] [/tr][tr][td]Tony Jefferson is planning to take some visits.[/td] [/tr][/table]Jefferson wants to take an official visit to Gainesville on Nov. 28, when the Gators play host to Florida State, but word has it that Florida is done at safety. Florida loves Jefferson as a player, but with all the issues with Elam's commitment - he has visited West Virginia and Tennessee recently - there's no way the Gators going to mess around with another safety and have told Elam as much.
More changes for Floyd

Things change weekly for five-star defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, something recruiting fans love. Last weekend, Floyd - from Philadelphia George Washington - was supposed to take an unofficial visit to Penn State, but that had to be postponed because of bad weather. This weekend, Floyd had been scheduled to take an official visit to South Carolina, but he has moved that one and now will be at Ohio State instead when the Buckeyes play host to Minnesota.

Floyd will take an official visit to North Carolina the weekend of Nov. 7 and plans to re-schedule his official visit to South Carolina. The Gamecocks have been considered one of his two leaders, along with Penn State, but the reason for the delay in the visit is because Floyd wants to take the visit with his teammate, linebacker Vernon Dupree, who also is being recruited by the Gamecocks but may end up at in junior college at Georgia Military.

Floyd will take an unofficial visit to Penn State when the Nittany Lions play host to Ohio State, and it appears the Buckeyes could pass the Gamecocks as the biggest threat to Penn State.

Seastrunk has taken official visits to Cal and UCLA and reportedly will take an official visit to USC the weekend of Nov. 28; there have been rumors that the Trojans are the team to beat. But more than one offensive line recruit has been told by coaches at LSU that they should come to Baton Rouge to block for Seastrunk. Is this simply a recruiting ploy or is Seastrunk a silent commit to the Tigers, as has been rumored from the beginning of the process? Despite the visits, evidence is mounting toward the latter.

Coaches at two of the schools involved are convinced USC has the edge, but sources closer to the situation feel it's inevitable Seastrunk will end up at LSU. Auburn once was considered the leader but coaches apparently have focused their attention on Michael Dyer of Little Rock (Ark.) Little Rock Christian, and if Seastrunk is going to be a Tiger, it will be a Bayou Bengal.

'T-Rex' update

Terrence Mitchell of Tampa Hillsborough, one of the nation's top cornerbacks, long has been considered a Florida State lean. But with the recent coaching issues at FSU, other schools are jumping to the top of his list. Many feel Mitchell - nicknamed "T-Rex" - will end up will end up at hometown USF. But keep an eye on Tennessee, as the Vols will get an official visit next weekend when they play host to South Carolina.

North Carolina, Georgia and Florida State also are in the mix, but the Bulls are the team to beat now, with Tennessee making a hard charge. Mitchell already has taken an official visit to Georgia and hopes to take as many officials as he can before deciding.

Pittsburgh thinks it has a steal in junior college cornerback Saheed Imoru from Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. He will be visiting this weekend and could commit shortly thereafter.

Five-star defensive end J.R. Ferguson of Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy could take his official visit to LSU this weekend. LSU could be the team to beat. He will take his official visit to Notre Dame on Nov. 21 and his official visit to Oklahoma either Nov. 14 or Nov. 28. South Carolina and Miami were rumored to be the other teams rounding out his top five, but sources say Florida State and North Carolina also are in the mix. Ferguson and his Hargrave team had a 30-play scrimmage against North Carolina a week ago, where Ferguson went head-to-head with UNC freshman offensive lineman Brennan Williams and held his own. Since then, Ferguson has been even more of a top priority for Tar Heels coach Butch Davis.

Ohio State will get an official visit from Georgia linebacker commitment Deon Rogers of Port St. Lucie (Fla.) Treasure Coast this weekend but were hoping for his teammate, linebacker Jeff Luc, to accompany him. But it appears Luc will visit USC on an official this weekend instead. It's doubtful Ohio State would take Rogers at this point, with commitments from Jamel Turner, Chad Hagan and Scott McVey. Each is a bit of a stretch to be a linebacker in college (Turner played end until this season, Hagan plays safety and McVey has size issues). Rogers is another prospect who is questionable as a linebacker with his size, and it's unlikely OSU can take a chance on another 'tweener.

Stanford commitment Louis Young is unlikely to end up in Palo Alto. Young, a four-star cornerback from Olney (Md.) Good Counsel, now is favoring Virginia and Boston College, with the Cavaliers possibly holding the edge because of a commitment from friend and teammate E.J. Scott. Young apparently won't take any officials until after the season. Virginia is a bit of a surprise, as Young talked more about Maryland, Virginia Tech and West Virginia recently. But UVa's recent turnaround has impressed him. BC long has been on his list of favorites, and West Virginia still is in the mix as well.

Casselberry (Fla.) Lake Howell linebacker Christian Jones may be visiting Notre Dame this weekend, but it appears Miami and Tennessee have the best shot at pulling him away from Florida State, his long-time leader. Jones has a strong relationship with Miami recruiting coach Aubrey Hill, and he is enamored with Vols defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Tennessee could be tough to beat if Jones takes his official visit there when the Vols play host to South Carolina, but right now, Miami could be his leader.

Four-star defensive tackle Mike Thornton from Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson was believed to have Georgia and Auburn at the top of his list, followed by Penn State, but when Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin arrived at his game last weekend in a helicopter, that may have catapulted the Volunteers into that top group.

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian defensive tackle Cassius Marsh has visited LSU and Arizona State this month and said his decision should come in the next couple of weeks. The Tigers, Sun Devils and USC are the finalists, and it's a bit of a surprise that California isn't in the mix anymore. Marsh originally committed to Cal, then de-committed; still, numerous sources felt he would become a Bear again.

More schools are getting in the mix for four-star wide receiver Kenny Shaw from Orlando Dr. Phillips. Long considered a heavy lean to Florida State, a source said Shaw wants to see what happens with the coaching situation after this season before he makes any pledge to the Seminoles. While that plays itself out, Shaw hopes to visit Tennessee and Alabama, and also could make it to the Michigan-Ohio State game with some teammates. That game is Nov. 21 in Ann Arbor. One factor could be Michigan commitment Ricardo Miller, a former Dr. Phillips teammate who transferred to Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer over the summer.

Michigan State will have four-star cornerback Christian Bryant of Cleveland Glenville on campus this weekend; it will be his first official visit and probably the only one he'll take until his season is finished. Ohio State clearly is the team to beat here, but Michigan State and Tennessee are making a strong effort. Bryant said earlier in the season that he and teammate Latwan Anderson talked extensively about playing at the same college together, but that has cooled down a lot in recent weeks. Anderson, like Bryan, is considered a heavy lean to Ohio State, but West Virginia and others cannot be counted out. Anderson might visit Michigan State this weekend as well.

Rutgers is in the lead for four-star wide receiver Brandon Coleman from Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara and distance will play a major role in his decision. Coleman doesn't want to go too far away but he doesn't want to be just down the road from home, either, and the Scarlet Knights could be the perfect fit. Virginia Tech is second, followed by Maryland, Virginia and Syracuse.

Sources say Kentucky is the team to beat for Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern running back Rajaan Bennett, who also has Louisville, East Carolina and Vanderbilt with high interest.

Michigan and Virginia Tech are the top schools for Millersville (Md.) Old Mill athlete Josh Furman, who said he's looking for an offer from Miami. He projects as a safety or linebacker in college.

Fork Union (Va.) Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Morgan Moses, the nation's top prep prospect, is focusing on getting home from FUMA before addressing the recruiting process. Virginia's recent rebound after an awful start has settled things down for Moses, who was becoming more and more interested in Tennessee. He will wait and see what happens with Al Groh and the Cavs' coaching staff before making any decisions. Moses, originally from Richmond (Va.) Meadowbrook, signed with Virginia out of high school in February.

Not necessarily.

Ordinarily I wouldn't.

But when the same things he's saying, are being said by others and supposed 'insiders' then these things have legs and possibly some truth tothem.....

And is Florida running a 3-3-5 now? Or was that just for the Arky game?
