the staff got a call from Scroggins' dad last friday. While he stopped very short of saying his son was opening his recruitment back up, the conversation was positive for UT and I would say the door is starting to swing open. It wouldn't shock me to see them at the Memphis game.
Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee
Watching their game against Florida, you got the impression that if the Vols had a more efficient quarterback, the outcome would have much different. Crompton's numbers last year were not impressive -- he completed 51.4% of his passes (in eight games) and had a 5-4 interception-to-touchdown ratio. This year, Crompton is ranked No. 77 among FBS quarterbacks, completing 54.7% of his passes and an 8-9 INT-TD ratio. When the game is on the line and you need that miracle comeback drive, Crompton doesn't exactly instill a lot of confidence in the offense.

"This is why I'm suspended…..I went to Deion sanders house ….and the NCAA found out…..they ask me if I been to his house I told them no…I thought it was a violation…but it wasn't… so I told them I went to his house… I lied to …them and I shouldn't have….and I'm not suspended for the rest of the season"

Dez's Facebook status...

So instead of talking to your school's compliance officer or your coach to see if going to Deion's house was a violation, you just did it and tried tokeep it quiet, then lied about it? Genius...

Yea, I can.

I'm one that actually values accountability over anything else, though, so I'm probably in the minority.

Like Deion said, Dez panicked when the NCAA asked him questions.

But based on Deion's account of what happened, Dez shouldn't be out too long...

Not really buying that. D1 athletes....especially well known ones like Dez, Tebow, Bradford, etc gotta be extremely conscious of all those damn violations andrules the NCAA has. Something as simple as that he's gotta know aint a violation when he prob got people offering him $@$% on a daily basis. I thinkhe's just admitting to a smaller lie to avoid a bigger truth.

Man these college kids are so stupid sometimes. Dudes taking money, clothes, cars, like people aint watching you. SMH
Elam is back in the fold for Florida
Talk about it in The Tribal Council
On Thursday October 8, 2009 it will be exactly one year to the day since West Palm Beach (Fla.) Dwyer athlete Matt Elam decided to publicly commit to the Florida Gators. When he committed a year ago, Elam cited a 10-year relationship with Gator head coach Urban Meyer as one of the driving forces behind his decision.

5-star Athlete Matt Elams says he is firmly committed to the Gators
However that close knit relationship took a backseat to other factors over the last month while Elam was out on the recruiting trail visiting a couple of other major programs.

While there may not be a party on Thursday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his commitment to Florida, Elam has at least decided to give Meyer, his staff and the rest of the Gator Nation an anniversary gift of sorts.

"I just realized it has been a year," Elam told GatorBait.net of his commitment before then going on to talk about his current situation. "I'm not going to Florida State (for an official visit this weekend) anymore, recruiting is over. I'm committed to Florida. Me and coach Meyer basically had a two hour talk. You know me and him go way back. We talked about our relationship. I sat down and thought about it, and I really don't want to be wasting the time of anyone else."

Now that he has once again put the recruiting process behind him, Elam spoke about what caused him to open it back up somewhat in the first place.

"I've been thinking about some things and was getting some attention and I thought I should look around. I've never been to these different states or saw other schools to give them a chance before I committed (to Florida). I blocked out every other school and just thought about Florida. I thought I should look around and see who else can get my attention.

"I went on these visits and they sell you a dream trying to get you to come to their school."

Conversations with two different coaches over the last week, as well as reading an update on another fellow prospect, helped move Elam back solidly into the Gators commitment column.

Elam felt like some of what he was told and promised by one coach, was also promised to another prospect as well.

"I feel like I want a person to be honest with me," explained Elam. "I'm going to be honest with you, so I want you to be honest with me. I don't want a coach to tell me one thing, and then tell the next safety the same thing. That set me off, stuff like that sets me off."

Though that started to change Elam's mind back toward the Gators, it was a phone conversation with Meyer that sealed the deal.

"I talked to coach Meyer about the safety situation (at Florida). They're going to be losing some key parts in the next two years. Will Hill is probably good enough to leave early and Major Wright will be gone. Some of the other recruits they have won't really be safeties."

Though Elam won't officially visit Florida State this weekend, he will have a chance to see the Seminoles later this season. According to the five-star safety, he will likely take his official visit to Florida for the instate rivalry game in late November.

As an early entry candidate, Elam plans on graduating in December and enrolling at Florida in January. Now that he knows for sure where he will end up, he can concentrate on other things.

"I want to stay committed to stay focused. I put all that stuff to the side. My brother (Cleveland Browns defensive back Abram Elam) told me to go where I feel happy and feel like I'm part of a family. I feel like that's Florida. That's where I'll be comfortable the next four years."
Bowden mess at FSU wreaking havoc on recruiting
12:48 pm October 5, 2009, by Chip Towers

Here's your after-lunch desert of recruiting nuggets:

It's getting really ugly down at Florida State. Make that U-G-L-Y, spelled out in all capital letters. Not surprisingly, it's having a negative effect on the Seminoles' recruiting.

The furor is over legendary coach Bobby Bowden. There has long been an internal debate over when and under what circumstances the patriarchal 79-year-old coach should step down. But it's not internal anymore. After this past weekend's loss to Boston College it's all over the Florida newspapers and television stations.

Not only are the Seminoles wasting away with a 2-3 record but there are rampant reports of in-fighting among assistant coaches and divided support for head coach-designate Jimbo Fisher. It's no surprise when a columnist like Orlando's Mike Bianchi writes that Bowden should step down. It's another thing when the local newspaper calls for Bowden to announce his retirement right away. That's a death knell if there ever was one.

But a person or paper's opinion is one thing. It's another thing altogether when a person in a decision-making position makes his opinion known. Here's what the chair of FSU's Board of Trustees, Jim Smith - one of the original persons responsible for Bowden's hiring in 1976 - said in an article written by respected Tallahassee Democrat reporter Steve Ellis:
"My hope is frankly that we'll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden Era. … I do appreciate what he's done for us, what he's done for the program, what's he done really for the state of Florida. But I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. We have been in a decline not for a year or two or three but I think we're coming up on seven or eight. I think enough is enough."

Through it all, Bowden remains defiant. "I will determine my situation. I won't let some guys' speculation tell me when to move," he said. And, "What would I gain by stepping down right now," Bowden said. "What would you do? Fire everybody and bring in a whole new coaching staff. You can't do that, you know? . . . I'll evaluate myself. I'll wait to the end of the year."

Regardless, all the hulabaloo has had a bad effect on the Seminole's recruiting. To date the FSU 2010 class, once thought to be a juggernaut in the making, has had three players "decommit": Valdosta-Lowndes OT Ed Christian (open); Duncan (S.C.)-Brynes DE Corey Miller (Tennessee); and Pahokee (Fla.) CB Merrill Noel (Wake Forest).

Meanwhile, the Seminoles are in on several five- and four-star prospects in the Sunshine State, including a couple the Georgia Bulldogs are trying to pluck away. If they're to maintain any hope of securing some of that talent and damming talent flow over to Gainesville, expect FSU to make a major announcement regarding Bowden in the coming days or weeks. . . .
