It might be, but you guys are extremely results-driven when it comes to analyzing Messi. Nevermind that he won a Spanish double this season, no UCL=failure. Nevermind that he's Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer, no trophies=failure.

I'm simply holding CR7 to the same criteria. Did he put up nice number those first three years at RM? Absolutely, but the fact of the matter is that they brought him in to win la Decima, and he came up short three years in a row until they dropped 100m on another Galactico.

How did I know this discussion would lead back to Messi and Argentina with you

If you wanna consider a trophy a season along with damn near a goal a game a failure,I don't know what to tell you.

Interested in seeing if Real fans thought he was a flop before la decima

lol the league will need pro/rel soon
The talent is improving though, although it’s mostly Latin American youngsters that are making the most impact on the league

America gotta improve its academies and make it more accessible
This ^
Don't yall have to pay very high costs just to join a local football team?
In a wealthy country with such a high population there's no good reason to not pump out lots of talent.

You don’t have to pay very high costs to join a local soccer team or league
But the thing is that if you want to develop your game at an elite level from a young age, your family will have to drop some dough in an actual academy or travel team in order to have a chance to make it to the next level.
And this is where our country falls behind in terms of developing youth talent that has the potential to at least be of decent class.

It's just that I don't think you guys hold CR7 to the same standard as Messi. You felt the need to bring up that caveat about Barcelona being dominant at the time, but no one brings up Real Madrid's current dominance to make excuses for Messi, they just say he isn't doing enough to win.

It's not whether I personally consider that to be a failure, it's whether Real Madrid does. Hell, Neymar just won a domestic treble at PSG and many folks consider that a failure.

I guarantee that if you look back at Marca articles at the time, they were questioning Florentino's experiment. Real Madrid fans had an unhealthy obsession with attaining la Decima before they finally won it.

I think there's too much emphasis on developing soccer on a national scale in the US.

Just focus on a city/state scale first.

I don't see why why Cali, NY, TX, and a couple other states can't put together a decent team if Iceland can qualify for the world cup.

If there's no interest in like north dakota, south dakota, etc **** em

There's clearly an untapped demographic in major metropolitan cities that have the money and infrastructure to make it work on a youth level.

MLS teams supporting the local talent is a step in the right direction as they're doing now.

Croatia only has a population of 4.1 million, Uruguay only has a population of 3.5 million so yeah CA, NY, TX should be focused

wasnt there a post that said theres like 2 soccer fields for every 10 baseball diamonds in CA
???

Belgium is another good example, they have a smaller population than the city of LA but they've become a footy heavyweight over the last decade

Population theory is ignorance

What about the availability of football pitches for the kids even in remote areas?
I live in a small rural town with a population of about 2000 people and we're surrounded by other similarly small rural towns.
We have a nice football pitch in the center of the town that's entirely free to use at all times, other than when the grass is being regrown. There's also pretty high fencing behind the goals to bounce back missed shots that otherwise may land in a moat or on top of a building.
All of the neighboring towns have at least one football pitch too. We're the only ones without a real football team that plays in a league, though we do share a sort of unofficial league consisting of local bars. One of those towns holds an annual U-13 cup that attracts talent from all over the country and even from abroad. I remember when I was little there were kids coming to the town all the way from Barcelona. Players like Kompany, Lukaku, De Bruyne, Courtois, Mertens, Witsel, ... have also played in that cup despite it being in the middle of nowhere.

The largest nearby city has a population of around 20k people and they have 4 full sized football pitches. They're part of a sports training facility so they're not entirely free but they only charge €1 for an hour or 2. Generally you're never far away from a football field and in many cases you can use them as much as you want for next to nothing.

Immigration really benefited Belgium's football pool too. Also Michel Sablon has a huge hand in revolutionizing the way Belgium got back on track back in 06-07. For those that care about footy history, look him up. What he did was fascinating. He along with Tom Byer are truly pioneers in what they did. Sablon though experienced a rather quick turn around within a couple of years.

Now this is a ******* signing.

A man of the people.

Would y'all be down to sponsor a club in a 3rd world country or something for charity? As a part of NT or something. @Methodical Management Any interest in getting involved in something like that? Like instead of building a library, build a football pitch, or provide jerseys or something?
that would be dope. somewhere in Africa where its super corrupt..

In the winter window I wasn't the biggest fan of the Mahrez move not because of his ability but because it felt like it was an attempted panic buy because of the way the Alexis saga fell through and im generally against panic buys. But going back in again shows me they do have a plan in mind with him and how he will fit into the squad and its not just a knee jerk reaction. Hope this transfer happens wouldn't be mad at us getting Mahrez who imo of the players that dont play for one of the "top 6" in the league is the best of them. Think he will add alot to City, if this does happen I think this means we will see more games of Bernardo playing in the middle. Was talked about alot that it was the longterm plan for him to play there last summer and he did play their a few times throughout the season.
