this is what i was thinking. ESPN basically isn't even bothering to cover much of the world cup because Fox has the rights. Which means Taylor Twellman gets on every espn show yells a bunch about nothing then disappears into bolivia.
People at work who know im a big soccer fan ask me all the time "is the world cup over yet" "how is ronaldo doing" "did the US win a game yet?" They ask in all seriousness too. Thats the knowledge base for people who can tell you the third string running back on the Ravens but can't tell you the US aren't in the World Cup or that Ronaldo lost already.

If I didn't make the effort to follow the sport, didn't know Spanish/have access to Latino channels,and didn't have friends who were watching, I might not even know that the World Cup is going on. ESPN did a great job last time by actually promoting a World Cup feeling and atmosphere; I'm not sure it those are the correct words, but I think you get what I mean by that. The Fox coverage makes me feel like I'm watching MLS; I've been watching it strictly on Telemundo when I'm at home, but the app I use at work only provides the American English coverage
