Damn, well, that is a complex question.
Some of my own personal travel bucketlist places in Japan have been based off of places Tony has covered on his various shows. He also seems to totally get "IT" (insert Jerigoat reference here) in terms of the culture, the wave lengths the country has going through it at all times, and what many percieve as the "seedy" part of it.
Now that said, I also think he can be extremely crass, full of himself, and a prick. Hell of a writer, film buff, and general personality that given the chance would love to share a drink and stories about our travels in Japan.
I suppose I am 50/50 on him depending on the day, but he is certianly entitled to his opinion. I think at this point as a self-proclaimed ex-pat that is just stuck in the place he is trying to ex-patriot from, I believe he has been vetted enough by native Japanese to have a well informed opinion on Japan itself.
