Report: Google is Considering Building Its Own Smartphone From Scratch

What if Google were to go the Apple route for its next smartphone? That would be controlling the entire process, from designing the chipset used to the entire manufacturing process and design of the body, alongside development of the software it runs. According to The Information, the search company is currently having internal discussions about this topic, though there isn’t exactly any word on Google signing off and moving forward.

You may be wondering how this differs from Google’s Nexus line and the answer is sort of simple. With Nexus phones or tablets, Google joins with one or more of their close partners to co-develop a product. With the Nexus 5X and 6P, Google asked LG and Huawei to help build them. Those companies not only help manufacture the phones (with branding), but they more than likely help distribute them as well. Should Google decide to go the Apple route and do it all, they take on all of that without the help of LG or Huawei or Samsung or HTC.

In the end, a phone designed from the bottom up by Google would help them push updates (even) easier and gain even more control over the overall Android experience. Honestly, though, it seems like a pretty silly idea. You basically get all of that with the current Nexus line, except Google doesn’t have to do any of the hard labor. By creating their own phone that doesn’t utilize close partners, they could potentially piss off many of them in the long run.

And what’s the point? The Information argues that this is a control play that helps give Google a tightened Android ecosystem. But for that to actually happen, they would have to become Apple and sell hundreds of millions of phones. Otherwise, you just have a Google phone that isn’t a Nexus, not selling and not making any sort of difference in the big picture. I don’t get it.

I love tech writers. Always unprofessional and always ready to offer their unwanted and unwarranted opinions.

btw phone always goes in the same pocket with screen facing in. keys go in my other pocket. if for some reason keys or other objects have to go in the same pocket as the phone, they are to the back of the phone. never gotten a scratch in my pocket (fingers crossed).

Tmobile is going off :eek free streaming on devices AND 30% off SlingTV. If they can withstand the traffic, :hat

DT really needs to start investing in TMUS w/ this upcoming 600MHz auction.

It's all about generating traffic. Tech articles/reviews are a dime-a-dozen these days so writers desperate for attention will make some off-color commentary to garnish attention. **** those guys.

I'm legit considering leaving verizon for tmobile. At the very least, I'll call to cancel while in a tmobile store and ask them what they are willing to do to keep me.

I have upgraded from my Sony Xperia Z3 to a LG V10. Holy smokes this phone is fire. The phone feels high end and everything in the phone just feels fast. Obviously the screen is huge but I'm loving this second screen. Highly recommended upgrade to anyone.

dudes on XDA are so prissy :lol they're in there complaining that edges of some tempered glass screen protectors are too rough and hurt their hands. I remember a few guys saying that the M7 was too rough around the edges and cut up their hands when holding them and caused lots of pain. so funny reading complaints over there.
reddit is the same way, they complain about some weird things over there

You have to realize that the target audience for those two sites are the same people who attend magic the gathering tournaments and LARP on the weekend.

Terry cloth.

I love how apple allows you to answer your iPhone on your MacBooks.  Is there any feature on MacBooks for androids?  Also, is it possible to get marshmallow on the Note5 without compromising the Spen?

Gold platinum note 5 available from T-Mobile

1000

T-Mobile made some big announcements today with Binge On and Simple Choice Amped, but if you’re a fan of gold phones, the day is about to get even better.

T-Mobile is now selling the Gold Platinum version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. It’s available in 32GB and 64GB capacities, just like the White Pearl and Black Sapphire models, and the Gold Platinum model’s pricing is the same as well. The 32GB model will set you back $0 down and 24 payments of $29.17 per month ($699.99 full retail) on EIP or $0 down and 18 payments of $15 per month with eligible trade-in on JUMP! On Demand. The more capacious 64GB flavor costs $99.99 down and 24 payments of $28.34 per month ($779.99 full retail) on EIP or $99 down and 18 payments of $14.50 per month with eligible trade-in on JUMP! On Demand.

Whats the right move between the Nexus 6p and the Note 5?

Go Note 5 if you want: wireless charging, S-Pen + features, and subsidized prices from a Carrier so you don't have to pay in full

6P if you want: Stock Android, fastest updates, USB type-C

It'd be a toss up for me having used the Note 5 & 6P.

If you're the every-year upgrade type of person, I'd go Note 5. The screen on it is just so beautiful and it feels great in the hand. Touchwiz is actually bearable.

If you're the every-two years (or more) upgrade type of person, I'd go 6P. Non-Nexus phone software upgrades are just too inconsistent and you NEED the ability to get the latest software. The footprint of this phone is too much for me personally and it's pretty unwieldy/uncomfortable to hold. Screen is supposedly the same AMOLED as the Note 5, but there's an obvious difference between the two and the 6P doesn't touch the Note's.

Airdroid lets you do that, and more than likely no to your second question. You usually lose S Pen features when you go full stock

so the new snapdragon 820 will allow finger print scanner right thru the display. that's kind of hot.

It'll use ultrasonic waves to create 3D scans, and supposedly it'll be able to read through screen protectors and what not.

Gotta wait till it pops up in a device. Intrigued, but meh.
