Thoughts on this Explorer II 16570?

That polar white dial really pops :pimp:

Just won one at an auction yesterday. Didn't see that coming. :lol Fun piece. Great proportions. Prefer it to the modern one. Like that it's not as hot as the others, so it's different. Don't mind a new Pepsi though. :lol

How much did you get it for?

And how new of one with the white dial do you think I could find for sub $6k?

$5k including premium. With B+P. Was expecting someone to outbid me. :lol The ones I'm seeing at the moment for the white one are at the 5.8k mark. Old and new dials seem to have similar pricing. So just choose which configuration you like the most (tritium / superluminova dial, old clasp / clasp with the flip lock)

This dude I know was trying to sell me on the cheapest he could get me one of those Explorers with the white dial would be one from 10-11 years ago for $7k

Not even gonna bother with him anymore

Man, if you are over 18, this polo head to toe stuff has to stop. There are always guys between 40-50 you see in the city with ill polo gear (all kinds of rugbys, sweatshifts, jackets, whatever) but they have to have some loud top with a nylon type hat to match. It looks ridiculous. I see guys this age all the time (and they seem to travel in groups of men), they all look the same, literally like walking billboards at 45 years old. Dont get me wrong I have a lot of that ****, and I love it, but you wear one piece at a time, not 3. Literally i see guys with grey beards doing this...group of 5 of the at Herald Square Macy's this weekend.

Congrats!!

In terms of wear can you describe the difference? I've been hesitant to go "vintage" because of tech concerns but my opinions have kinda changed as improvements in regards to wristwatces are incremental.

I've been thinking about the 16550..

Personally not for me. Only quartz I'll ever wear now is either a solar or kinetic movement.

Really depends on the condition. But prices are between 5.8-6.5k

Congrats!!

In terms of wear, the older cases have a slimmer profile, smaller case (40mm vs 42mm). The new ones feel chunkier, more solidly built (which I usually prefer, but not for the 216570... Too big). If you're getting into vintage the first time, you'd definitely notice how flimsy they can be, especially the bracelets and the clasp. Rolex quality has gone a long way for sure since then.

Going vintage Rolex shouldn't be too daunting if you can find yourself a good watchmaker to take care of pieces. Just avoid RSC. :lol

What’s the oldest year that you’d go for the Explorer II?
The one I got was 1994. Don't really mind the age, as long as the condition is great. Will need a service no matter how old at this point. I just preferred this folding clasp to the one with a flip lock. Feels better on wrist.

Would you make sure to only buy one that has the box and papers?

And if you bought one without box and papers what’s the most you’d pay for it?

If it's a keeper... Papers and box don't really matter. Just make sure you're getting the real deal. You don't wear the box and papers on your wrist anyway. $5k max for a naked piece in good condition, I guess.

Man, who knew the hype on this Q Timex was so heavy. Wanting to pull the trigger but somewhere that has free returns.

Apparently no where to be found besides eBay at 4x the costs. Wonder when it’ll be back.

it'll keep restocking like the marlin and all metal gshocks, those initial releases sold out too but now readily available and can even be had on a discount

Agreed. Just waiting to get it at least with the 15% off.

That 18k gshock is nuts though.

rfx45 rfx45 what do you know about the 1151 Frederic piguet movement?

I’ve done my googles and there’s not a ton out there. Do FP movements hold their own against other manufacturers in the same price range?

its a very good movement but i am no expert in the inner workings of watches, not as much as id like

i think you might find more result in researching caliber 1150, its the og before blancpain purchased them iirc, fp provided this movement in some capacity ap and vc before the purchase as well but id have to look that up to be sure

ill try and look more into it later but hopefully you find more info while googling for "caliber 1150" instead

Would you guys consider $7,800 for an Explorer II 216570 dated 2017 with all the papers and box a good deal? Would include overnight to AM delivery to my nearest FedEx as well.
