I am going to get my mom a charm for the bracelet she's had since last Christmas, a new Rachel Ray cookbook she mentioned she wanted, and a gift certificate for her haircut.

You have two options:

1)tell the the truth and offer a heartfelt apology

2) make up a lie so outrageous and dramatic that she would feel odd telling you that you are lying. I.e. you had to rush a sibling or good friend to the hospital.

Id go with option 1, though.
