THIS
I will never forget the convo I had with my good friends Dad... he was a stevedore down at the harbors here in Hawaii... big bucks, but long hours... he sat me down one day and started pointing at their boat, cars, etc and said "I bought all this stuff for my kids and family, but at the same time I never made it to any of his sporting events, art shows, and didn't even make it to the hospital when my grand kids were born... don't make the same mistake I did" - it really sank in with me to work hard and have financial stability, but don't focus on just that and instead focus on time with the ohana
A lot of people say this after they’ve made money though.
However, when you are broke / not well off and don’t have the security blanket of money there’s nothing more important to the long term well being of your family than stacking. It’s pure stress and terror knowing you are one bad car accident or one big mess up away from not being able to pay rent etc.
Id rather end up with my kids and I not having spent a lot of time together on activities like sports events etc but at least they had a roof, food, quality education, and the opportunities that I never had. That’s the sacrifice I’ll make for my family to not be broke and hopefully my kids recognize the sacrifice and build on the foundation in a good way.
