The Official Tennis Thread (Vol. 2024 US Open)

Club Fed prevails but for how long? From the highlights on ESPN his ground strokes had godly pace. Haven't seen that from him in years. Must be the racquet.

SHOWTIME really impressed me last night. Aga has an excellent shot to win the tournament.

Caught the 1st 2 sets of the Nadal match. As soon as Nadal won the 2nd set tiebreaker, I had a feeling it was over for Grigor :lol Missed the Fed/Murray match. :x

I will definitely DVR the Nadal/Fed match :smokin

Let's go Federer and Stan! I'm so excited that we have a bonus Fed-Nadal match to look forward to.

I honestly couldn't have asked for a better draw, wouldn't change a thing!

Nadal v Federer... We know how this story ends (Except in the YEC). UGH. :(

Come on Fed #18 is right there. :\

Rafa celebrated like that was the final. I think he knows if it wasn't for nerves Grigor could have stunned.

Rafa said " just hold on a second young one." Federer dispatches Murray, nice. Not a fan of Murray. Damn at Vicha losing....

On another note. A friend of mine got together last night to play. He took me in the first set 2-6, I got him second set 6-4. I was getting worked the third set and hit 2 service winners to come back being down 15-40...Then the lights went out...Bummer. lol.

Vamos. Grigor will rue the two missed (wide) shots in the third tiebreaker. Especially the (forehand) shot that I believe went wide to Rafa's right, Nadal wasn't getting there to return the ball. Would have been 7-5 Dimitrov in the tiebreaker, up two sets to one with Rafa battling blisters, heat, and pressure. That was Dimitrov's golden opportunity. He's coming on stronger, quicker than Nishikori and Raonic. Up the conditioning and develop more consistency.

I don't think Berdych stands a chance the way Stan has been playing tennis since the '13 US Open. Maybe it's my bias against Tomas, haven't been a fan since the Almagro incident(s). Some of the backhand winners Stan was strafing past Nole's right made my jaw drop. The pace and accuracy. Stan in 4. Rafa in 4 over Fed, even with the new, improved racquet.

Ever impressed with Aga's mobility and court coverage. You'd have to believe this is Li Na's best opportunity with her past success at the Aussie and Masha, Vika, Serena out. I kinda want Genie to win, feel good story but Li Na faces Aga in the Final for me. Li Na beats Genie in straight sets, Aga wins in three.

Happy to see challengers throw their best to unseat Nole, Masha, Vika, and Serena.

My coworker bashed both my favorite young up-and-comers. Said Nishikori will be a poor man's Ferrer because he lacks power or one strong weapon on the tennis court to expose opponents. Good at everything, but master of nothing. Speed may not be enough. He also claimed Milos will always rely on a big serve and not evolve/take the next step, similar to Isner and Jerzy.

aepps: Great call on Cibulkova. Can't believe she beat Halep like that, dominating fashion with relative ease. Wouldn't be surprised if Dominika messed around and upsets Aga in three sets.

Waiting for my picks to hit: Hampton, Keys, Puig.

Masha I saw getting upset. But did not see Serena and Vika losing.
I think the order fans would be most prepared for upset is: Masha, Vika, Serena.

Revolving door with Masha's coaching, Vika can be streaky.

Serena losing to a player that has historically lacked confidence in her game and shots? Nah, didn't see it myself.

I saw Serena taking that L a mile away. Serena spent most of the off-season working on her serve without recognizing that her new found success is because of her improved footwork. Her footwork was really sloppy in her tuneup tournament and it was even worse here. There is a direct correlation between her footwork and the number of errors she hits. Without her footwork she reverts back to a Venus like error machine and when you get everyone's best shot you can't afford to give away games and sets on unforced errors. I can't count how many shots Serena dumped in the net against Ana.

As far as my girl Dominika, I just felt like her game gives people problems because she packs a huge punch for someone her size but she keeps her errors in check and she's in phenomenal shape. That is a tough combination for anyone. Not to mention she took Serena to three sets last year at Miami.

All energy. The aggressiveness is stunning for her stature.

So you all-in then, riding with Cibulkova over Aga?

I'm picking Dominika over Aga. I think this match goes 3 but if Dominika can keep her errors in check and dictate play off her forehand she has a great shot to win.
