The Official Tennis Thread (Vol. 2024 US Open)

Saw the first two sets before going to bed...so many shots into the net :{ damn rafa

saying Rafa is tired was good excuse... you cant be that tired if your that young :lol

its just like his extraordinary movement in clay, when it comes to grass, its about a couple of notches lower which is enough for most to compete in the same level with him. besides, i think he played three straight tournament in clay before this game and the ample adjustment is wasnt there.

No, I don't buy the "tired" argument. He just played poorly.  His backhand was not working and Stevie D was on-fire.  There were a lot of times where Rafa ran around his backhand (even when the ball landed deep in his backhand corner) to hit his forehand, only to spray it past the doubles-alley. He was that unsure about his backhand.

His knee was also visibly bothering him, but credit to him, he didn't want to talk about it and credited his opponent instead. The grass courts in week-1 tend to bounce a bit lower, while in week-2, when there's less grass and the courts are harder, the balls will bounce a bit higher.  With Rafa's knee issue, the lower bounce made it a bit more tricky for him.
SP, do you remember back in the 90s when clay court specialists from Spain would skip Wimbledon every year because of the surface.
I think that was to avoid Becker, Ivanisevic , Sampras & Agassi. Guys literally didnt stand a chance vs their power and speed
Yeah, I just remembered all the clay-courters being nonexistent at Wimbledon... Emilio Sanchez, Sergi Bruguera, Alberto Berasategui, Thomas Muster... and so on.

Whole different game now with the grass the way it is.

Laura has played poorly since Australia.

Good for her.

Imagine Laura vs. Kerber in the quarters.

Laura's so hot-cold. Sometimes she'd unleash her powerful groundies consistently, sometimes she'd spray all her shots everywhere. She's got another new coach, so she'll need a bit of time to get back into the rhythm of things.

When she's on though... her power can be very impressive.

I've never been impressed by Laura. She has potential but I think a player like Madison keys has more upside

Her name sounds like she works in a different industry.

Serena's opponent was attractive.

Mandy Minella was looking good. Wouldn't even tell her to shower after a match. She'd be good as is.

If nadal was tired then so is Ferrer but he made it past the 1st round.

Yeah, Mandy's a doll... seen her on the tour for a few years already, but she rarely plays well enough to make in the big tourneys.

Why Serena in R1?

Yeah, I was surprised to see that she was 27. I thought I would've seen her at least once before today. She's only played a few matches at majors.

^ My most memorable match of her was when she played Venus a few years back at the US Open... she was all smiley and rather delightful.

a Serena vs Sharapova final will be nice and epic this year at Wimbledon.. Maria kinda needs a win though over Serena.
