The Official Tennis Thread (Vol. 2024 US Open)

Listening to the Wimbledon draw now...

Nole vs. Kohlschreiber in the first round. Then Lleyton Hewitt. Wow.

Serena and Venus could meet in the Round of 16...

Damn even the 3 week break from the French Open flew by. I don't think Serena has played a match since then.

Tennis chicks :Nthat

Uncle Tom expects Rafa to win Wimbledon.Just curious, have you guys heard of nickname Rafatigue? I chuckled when I heard this nickname.

The Williams sisters are two of the few players that usually don't play any tourneys during the short break in-between the French Open and Wimbledon. Nole and Masha generally don't either.

Also...

Maria said inher press conference yesterday that she was going to this year but had issues with the virus that she was suffering in the French open for a week or so after

It's not much longer until my favorite Slam starts. I'm hyped. I'll be rooting for both the King and Queen of Grass.

Before play begins, I wanted to post some thoughts/predictions for the Championships. I'm hoping I'm wrong of some of these, but I have a gut feeling some of this may actually come true. I'll just put everything in a spoiler box since people here ignore walls of text anyway.

— Andy wins his second Wimbledon.

— I think Djokovic could lose at any point in the tournament. I believe he's very vulnerable after losing another RG final. He actually lost a match to 18-year-old World No. 64 Alexander Zverev a few days ago. A dangerous opponent like Anderson/Cilic/Wawrinka could eliminate the defending champ. Kohlschreiber is a tough first round opponent as well.

— Fed could very well reach his 10th Wimbledon final, but I think Berdych (or Murray) may end his quest for #8 this year.

— Venus or Kvitova will end Serena's hopes of a Calender Slam. Actually, I think Venus will pull off the upset in the Round of 16.

— ...Yes, that means I think Venus will make the second week of Wimbledon. I don't see anyone beating her before the 4th Round. Errani would be the highest ranked opponent she could face in the 3rd round, but I can't see her being a threat on grass. Dunno how far Venus can go from that point since she's also playing doubles.

— Boom Boom will make another deep run. Hoping Lisicki gets to the semis to play Kvitova, but Kerber might defeat her in the QFs if she's still alive next week.

— If she's back to 100%, Kvitova will probably win her third Wimby.

Djoker has a very tricky draw, but I wouldn't look too much into his Boodles loss.  It was just an exo where all the players joked around quite a bit.

I will say that his lack of grass-prep could be an issue... didn't play any grass warm-ups.  Very odd.

Yeah, saw that yesterday.  Didn't even know he had an issue!  I think he was still trying to practice prior to the withdrawal.

Damn shame about injuries.

They just showed a graphic on sportscenter on the women with the most grand slams. How was that the first time i've ever heard of Margaret Court who has 24? Maybe I don't watch enough tennis but I think that was the first time i've ever seen her name. With the way people always talk about Graff, I thought she had he most with 22.

Not sure why... I guess it's cuz Steffi's more recent?  Not taking anything away from MC, but IIRC, slams back then were all on grass other than RG... so I guess people like to look at the surface-variety of Steffi's wins?  I dunno.  Or maybe cuz Serena will have to get to 22 before she thinks about 24?  Ultimately, you can only look at the numbers for what they are... can't compare generations.

Anyway...

Hewitt bows out - good fight though. Kei maybe in trouble. Easy for Ana today for once

The Queen of Grass double bagels Madison Brengle in 42 minutes. Finishes her off with back-to-back aces.

Court played before the open era. Grand Slams have more significance since the open era. Not taking anything away from Court but the competition pre open era wasn't that high.

^ Oh yes, yes, yes... that's right... Open Era...
