Don't know why people care about ratings. Do you love watching the game or not? **** the casuals. They'll come and go.

On the flipside, NFL fans love to shove it down NBA fans' throats about the ratings disparity as if anyone cares.

I love watching basketball/NBA. Idgaf what anybody feels. Ball is life. Only thing that sucks to me is when my team loses. Beyond that. It's sports. It changes with players and skill levels and strategy. If you didn't like it, don't watch. It's that easy. There are plenty of sports I don't watch. I don't think any of them noticed.

Also NFL is king now and a fall off doesn not seem feasible too imagine but I feel like next 20-30 years they are going to have a serious issue as people get more aware of CTE, and Grown men running full speed into each other isn’t a good idea, majority parents will not let their kids play football and most likely focus on other sports.

I was going to mention the NFL because I actually hear a lot of complaints about the current pro football game too. Too soft, to pass happy, etc.

But the ratings aren’t really impacted because fantasy/gambling and the relatively small number of games continue to ensure people tune in to the TV broadcasts.

He was never a Lakers fan. He was a Kobe Stan. Then he became a Steph Stan and, by necessity, a Warriors fan.

The next team he roots for will be the team that person he next chooses to Stan for is on.

Even the NCAA basketball window is now just a few weeks in March. Nobody cares about the regular season anymore. And, the NBA has its draft right after the Finals, then free agency starts immediately. Getting rid of the blackout period on signings was a good move as well because there was definitely a lull at the beginning of July.

They have the best offseason in sports. Finals ends and then you get the draft a couple weeks after, then free agency (where big names actually move), Summer League, then FIBA/Olympics every 2 years. That stuff ends up getting more coverage than baseball in the summer.

I like the warriors. I only stopped fking with the Lakers because they pissed me off. Numerous bs things. Getting bronze. Firing magic . Trading all my youngins. I rooted for the Lakers since elementary was still locked in in the down Kobe years and after he retired with hopes of my youngins advancing. I didn't plan to bounce. Was there for the trash years and high draft picks just for Raymone to come and those idiots letting him trade the future for a wonderful world of Disney trophy.

I expect some down years when Steph retires, but I rocks with the organization, ownership, the young talent and drafting. I don't need to be a die hard lifelong fan of an organization just because others do. These are companies. I support while I like them and what they're doing. I have rocked with curry since Davidson and the warriors since mark Jackson was wasting time outs to preach on the sidelines lmao used to roast bro for that lol. Time flies.



I like a handful of players, but I probably won't like the NBA as much anyways tho when Bron Steph and KD bounce. I might just go all in on my Otown sons the Magic. That's home team.

I’ve heard the same “oh, ratings are down” stuff at different intervals during the 30+ years I’ve been an NBA fan. Yet, the game has done nothing but grow. The people who are personally dissatisfied tend to be the loudest.

Some years the ratings are better than others due to a large number of factors beyond just the on-court product. Until it’s a multi-year trend that’s impacting team valuations and player salaries, it’s not a problem.

It's not about if I'm enjoying it or not. How we differ in the way we look at the facts is ok. Agree to disagree.

But the fact that ratings are way down can't be debated. It's a fact.

True, ratings over the years have fluctuated. But never had an opening night game drawn a smaller rating than a regular season ESPN 2 college football game between Maryland and Boston college.

Offensive and defensive schemes are far more complex now than they've ever been. Also, you have to defend out to 30 feet now. In the 1980s, you didn't even really need to defend the three-point line because hardly anyone shot threes the first ten years or so.

Again, all of that extra 10 feet or so of distance per possession you speak of is made up almost entirely in the extra 20 trips down court (2 trips per possession)

Again. Facts are facts.

In the 80s, there were over 10 possessions more per game. How you feel or how I feel about the facts can differ, and that's ok.

The league tripled the media deal from 2016. It's certainly not perfect, but it's will be a sought after commodity in 11 years because it's popular nationally and globally live sport.

You're right. The NBA isn't going anywhere. It's easy to fall into preaching extremes when talking about the significance of current ratings.

I never said that the NBA was gonna go under.

But to deny that ratings are any issue is just not accurate. Nike canned their CEO due to declining sales.

Does that mean that Nike as a company is going under? Absolutely not.

But men with more business acumen than I or anyone else here on nt have decided to sell their teams now rather than later. To me, that's indicative of what they believe is happening.

If you were a stakeholder in the NBA and they told you in 5 years that the fortune you acquired was now worth 3/5 of what it was 5 years ago, there would be major cause for concern. It doesn't mean that you're not wealthy anymore.

I’ve pointed out facts too and you keep coming back to a single fact about opening night ratings for one game as if it tells the whole story. It says nothing about the state of the NBA or long-term trends.

But go back to whatever Internet echo chamber made you think you had a real point and drink their Kool-Aid some more.

Teams not defending in the 80s is new to me. Sounds false.

As of teams are defending better today. That's laughable.

That’s a big part of it for me and many old heads. There is simply no defense and the games lack intensity. Born ball hurt the league. Friendly, flopping and no defense. Now It’s turned into a bad 3 point shooting contest. Boston is jacking up about 50 threes a game.

The All-Star game and weekend is all you need to know. It went from the best in the world trying to show why they are better than one another to a weekend of complaining stars, stars scared to lose, no stars and a giant 3 point contest.

The slate of games in the opening week not on TNT drew poor ratings. Down from last year's games in the same slots.

The playoffs last year down 12% and the finals itself down 7% reportedly.

If you don't have to exert much effort on defense, those extra trips down the court don't matter. Today's players are moving laterally a lot more and exerting a ton of energy and extra wear and tear on their bodies, and covering much more ground.
