The Official NBA Season Thread: HO HO HO

Of course.

The slate of games in the opening week not on TNT drew poor ratings. Down from last year's games in the same slots.

The playoffs last year down 12% and the finals itself down 7% reportedly.

This is not my opinion. Just facts.
Cherry picked facts in a very small time period.

I’ve pointed out facts too and you keep coming back to a single fact about opening night ratings for one game as if it tells the whole story. It says nothing about the state of the NBA or long-term trends.

But go back to whatever Internet echo chamber made you think you had a real point and drink their Kool-Aid some more.
Not sure who crapped in your Wheaties.

I'm entitled to my opinion just like you are. Don't like my opinion? cool.

No harm done.

But be respectful. No need for the passive aggressive disses

He has NOT been helping lately.

Guys at a whole need more minutes. To stay in rhythm when you got it or to find it once you lost it. Playing 14 guys was cute, but it causes too much uncertainty for guys, while kerr just telling them to stay ready. nah. Square up

I would bet anything that these team valuations will not be dropping by 40% in 5 years
Values only going up. Tv deal and salary cap and max contracts.

They can say views going down, but the ink is dry.

With the NBA viewership going down in flames I hope this makes league pass cheaper

Or would they charge more to help keep the league afloat 🤔

Last year's playoffs and finals aren't a small time period.

But moving on
They absolutely are as a basis for evaluating the business viability of something like the NBA. By literally any reasonable, statistically valid standard.

You said in multiple posts it wasn’t your opinion, but “facts”. Glad you realized the difference finally.

Think of NBA ownership as the most exclusive residential island in the world. There are 30 estates on the island, each with a minimum cost of $3 billion. There's no other island in the world like it. Billionaires would fight tooth and nail to get one of these properties. Wait, there's some extra land where we can squeeze in two more estates? Thanks, that'll be $4 billion each because it increases our property values.

Be for real.

I gave facts about the reading and my opinion about the NBA needing to change if they want to reverse the trend.

Stop it

I was being sarcastic to make a point, of course I don't think NBA teams will ever be with 40% less than what they are now. Point being the billionaires care about even the smallest of percentage points. It's part of why they're billionaires to begin with.

Mat and his Brother bought 15 more % of the Suns the other day and now own 66%. They have through the end of 2024 to acquire more shares at the original price from when they purchased in. And they're just trading shares of UWM stock to the other share holders to acquire it. Brilliant grift.

Ratings? Why do we care about ratings? Unless the ratings affect your pockets, why is it even a point of concern?

The NBA is fine and will be fine. Ratings will fluctuate, but in the end the NBA will exist and continue putting forth a solid product. It’ll continue to grow in some markets and lose viewership in others—kinda like most any other sport over time.

I just want to watch hoops without all the stupid blackout crap. That’s legit my only gripe about the NBA. If I’m paying for League Pass and YoutubeTV that includes NBA TV, why the hell are nationally broadcast games blacked out in my area? Over the past few years I’ve seen more Hawks/Grizz games IN PERSON than I’ve watched on TV. That’s nuts.

My only complaint with the current NBA is the volume of injuries and I don’t think the league can do anything to prevent that other than shorten the season, which I also don’t want.
The 2011-12 season got shortened from 82 games to 66 due to the lockout. Honestly I’d be fine with shortening it to that. While personally I don’t mind 82, it’s a bit more irrelevant to play that many games with the play-in and only the bottom 4 teams in each conference not making the playoffs at all.

I was going to mention the NFL because I actually hear a lot of complaints about the current pro football game too. Too soft, to pass happy, etc.

But the ratings aren’t really impacted because fantasy/gambling and the relatively small number of games continue to ensure people tune in to the TV broadcasts.
People complain constantly about the NBA refs, but good lord are NFL refs unbearably in favor of the Chiefs. They’re not even hiding it.

Welcome to The Buddy Hield Experience

The ref argument is a non-starter for me. It's really hard to call games over 48 minutes at the pace and player movement that exists. Also, everything is in HD now, so any slight miss gets amplified. Last season, sitting almost near courtside, I was, like "how these refs keep up and see all this stuff is insane". Zach Zarba was the lead, and he is one of the best refs in the league, and he controlled the game so well. They're bound to miss some things, ultimately.

Also, the coaches and Jokic (who was playing) are constantly working the officials during live play. It was really cool to watch up close and hear some of the interactions. The refs keep their cool really well, and wait for dead balls, free throws and TOs to chat.

Gambling is gonna ruin the sport way quicker than an over reliance on 3 point shooting or iffy all star game structure.

Gambling is the only shot the nba has to ever be the #1 sport. They need to lean into it like the nfl diddin the 90s

One sport specialization at early ages is a bigger contributing factor to injuries than the NBA schedule.

Young players are coming into the league with way more wear and tear than past generations.

If I have a son and he plays I won’t be letting him play spring + summer AAU ball in one calendar year. One or the other and the other season will be spent on conditioning, weight lifting and individuals.

I don’t disagree with you. But then do you think your hypothetical son would run the risk of not developing at the same rate as others? Especially if you want them to play high level ball?
