The Donald Sterling Thread

What does suspending an owner entail?
He has to watch the games from his mansion eating shrimp with his shirt off.

@BillSimmons: To clarify an earlier tweet: Silver could potentially "terminate" Sterling's ownership, then have NBA take over franchise + sell it for him.

:nerd:

America loves to turn on it's own if it may cost them money. Donald Sterling has only voiced his opinions in PRIVATE that most people have whether they believe it or not. Whether it's consciously known or simply exists within the subconscious of many people; not only in America, but in the world. All of this goes into the same pot that has been brewing since the "birth" of this country. Look at the number of billionaires, millionaires, upper class ppl, etc in regards to the ratios of white vs. Black. Does that fact not say the same exact thing Sterling was voicing? Or is it just that Black ppl haven't been smart enough or are too lazy to make it to those ranks? Look at all these shows, like basketball wives and other garbage. Look at the glorification of strippers from my "black" community. Don't be up in arms over anything. You didn't complain when your natural hair was deemed unprofessional, so don't be mad when a highly successful (in regards to money acquired through business ventures) "professional" views everything associated with Blacks undesirable. Don't be up in arms over someone making comments like this when a public trial free'd a man who killed an unarmed Black teen. All of this is silly.

Should he be condemned for his opinions? Only if we condemn the infrastrucure, establishment, laws, protocols, propaganda, history, etc of the entire country that very understandably breeds the opinions of Sterling.

It's like raising a kid with wolves and then you get angry at him because one of his private howling sessions became public. Insane.

Hush man, just stop

I really don't think Silver wants his first few years as commissioner to be tied up in court and legal troubles that Sterling would bring them.

there are so many things wrong w/ this post ...

but i'll just say ... there should be an outrage because you don't have to like a certain group of people, but to go as far as being a slumlord w/ a proven track record and to add these comments. More people need to be aware. it's not just about black people. if the message gets out that this type of attitude is not going to be tolerated (even if it's more about protecting the NBA logo) on any level from any one. That is why this is important.

What legal troubles?

This isn't a normal business that Silver is forcing him to sell. This is an exclusive 30 person club. I'm positive that owners can vote each other out in cases like this. They are the ones that vote new owners in. They make all decisions together. I'm sure the contracts give the other 29 owners the power to do something if it hurts the image/money of the entire league.

Don't know why people think voting him out and forcing him to sell is going to resolve anything. All it does is open Pandora's box, the devos have to go, Dan Gilbert has to go, The Russian has to go. All these owners have blood on their hand to get to where they are at.

Not really. The only reason this is being talked about is because it was made public. Not because it was recently discovered or was made known to. It's been tolerated since, so what's different now? When he says "they" in reference to ppl telling him that his GF is posting pics with Black ppl or whatever, who do you think comprises that "they"? KKK members in Alabama? Let me just put it like this, other owners will tread very lightly in how they express their "disdain". They don't know what Sterling could bring out, or what may/may not have been recorded of them.

Even Michael Jordan himself thinks a little bit like Sterling. See Chamillionaire video. All the same stuff.

How are the situations similar to this?
