We're both pretty big into Lego, and Star Wars. He's known about it since he was 6 and mentions it like 2 or 3 times a year like 'Man that would be so awesome.' Pretty much the same way you or I talk about Ferraris or mansions, like 'That would be nice but never gonna happen,' like a fantasy.

I promise, if I even THOUGHT he would even THINK about doing something like that after being let down like that, he would never get anything more than a Coke and a smile for xmas. Ain't no way. Yes, that would be a **** move by me if I did that, but nah, he's not going to just throw ****.

I do love playing tricks with gift giving, but I don't think that my brand of tricks is mean, per se. For example 2 years ago, I gave him an Nintendo Switch game. Thing is, I took the game out of the Switch case, so he unwrapped it and got super excited at the Switch casing then opened it up and there was no game inside. ☹ I played it off like maybe someone stole it and we can take care of it later but whatever hurry up and open the next one. The next one was... a box of Cheerios with the Switch game taped on the inside flap. So he opened the wrapping and it was Cheerios and he was confused and I told him to look inside... and then he saw the Switch game. Laughs all around.

IMO, those types of 'jokes' are only ok if you actually give them the present at the end. Giving someone an empty box and be like "Why are you so upset? It was only a joke!" is just mean and cruel... and not funny.
