It's not, at least in MD. You can pretty much walk into a wal mart and buy a shotgun or hunting rifle

The shooter at the navy yard had a history of mental illness....so yea, in some cases, warning signs ARE there.

Can you give me some examples of people involved in recent shootings in public places who weren't considered to have mental problems?

Mental health in the US is something that needs complete reform. There are people out there who clearly need help, but are ignored. I've seen this first hand.

This is really scary... Everyone around here goes to Columbia Mall, like EVERYONE I know. Now it's never going to be the same going there... RIP to the employees, just terrible. Shootings can happen anywhere at anytime. Honestly I would've never had thought it would happen there.

Ppl fail to realize gun violence has never been lower n this country (overalll.. dont tell me bout chiraq) its jus we hear almost every case n the media now.

Theres nothing worse to me than living ur life that fearfully... i trust god and my eyes and heart

Hopefully i never hurt somebody to the point they want me dead... shrug

And to answer your question imo everyones opinion of mentally stable is going to vary... im not sure u can jus draw a line in the sand because how do you define the line. Half this country is on anti depressants

In many of these instances, there has been either a history of mental illness or warning signs that were ignored.

Mental health in this country is a SERIOUS problem when there are plenty of people who don't get the help that they need.

After Newtown, there was nothing but promises given about changes that would be made. A year and change later, what exactly has been done?

Now, I don't know the mental history of the shooter from yesterday, but it will be interesting to see what exactly comes out as more details are given about motive.

Once you start going the mental health route, it's game over. Anyone with a history of depression could be counted out. Like the rape victim that needed counseling after her attack, she couldnt get a gun. Or the mom who just had a kid and had postpartum depression, she can't get a gun. Or the guy who's girl left him and then he got fired and he has situational depression, he couldn't get a gun.

New laws restrict freedom. Stop trying to take it away.

So where do you draw the line on what disorders are too unsafe. How did u diagnose these disorders? How severe are they?

Proper testing would take weeks and then again be arbitraily to some degree) decided. Whose payin for that?

I'm not making the laws, so it's tough to say. You're ASSUMING that I want to feel like I want to live in a society where there is no violence, but that's putting words in my mouth. I never said such a thing.

All I'm suggesting is that there needs to be some sort of reform done to our current MH laws. Make the gun purchase regulations more strict going forward. Obviously, it's two different things...but look at the hoops your have to jump through to buy a house. Going under contract is one thing...but then you need your inspection, appraisal, walk though- etc. Whole thing (if running smoothly) takes about a month + to complete. Buying a weapon should slightly more difficult than just strolling into sports authority and walking out w. a gun 10 minutes later.

I was supposed to go down there yesterday and pick up my contacts from Lenscrafters.. I'm probably just gonna wait til next week. Can't believe this happened within this community.. Columbia Mall will definitely never be the same for years to come
