Hawks' Williams carjacked at gunpoint
Updated: Dec15, 2007, 07:35 PM EST
ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta forward Shelden Williams was carjacked at gunpoint Saturday before the Hawks' game against Charlotte.

Douglasville City Police said two suspects were arrested late Saturday afternoon at Arbor Place Mall in Douglas County, near Atlanta. The suspects were in Williams' car and were attempting a robbery, according to an officer who answered the phone at the
Douglasville Police Department.

The officer, who declined to give her name, said one suspect was taken to a hospital after suffering dog bites from the police canine unit during the arrest.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche says Williams provided police with his license plate number, leading to a search that led to two suspects being arrested in Williams' car at a mall in Douglas County.

"I'm just glad that he's safe," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said.

"Cars and things like that, jewelry, money, all that can be replaced."

Triche said the car was damaged when found.

Williams was in uniform for Saturday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats. He told Woodson and other team officials about the incident. He said the car was stolen outside a barber shop.

Williams declined comment to The Associated Press.

Fulton County Police spokesman Gary Syblis says he was awaiting a report on the incident.

Syblis said Williams, a second-year player from Duke, did not identify himself as a player for the Hawks.

Syblis says the incident occured outside a barber shop on Cascade Road.

The incident is only the latest in a series of attacks on professional athletes. Washington ******** star Sean Taylor was shot and killed at his home in what is believed to have been a botched burglary.

Earlier this month, Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and his entourage were shot at in a parking lot outside a five-star hotel in Indianapolis.

maybe athletes need to have an alter-ego/regular image: cheap car, cheap clothes when going to the grocery or the barbershop..... drive around in a nice carand stuff like that, is gonna make you a target.

i mean "average" in terms of presentation.... i don;t know how shelden williams goes about town, but in general, i would want to keep a lowprofile and avoid attention.... save the nice cars and nice clothes for parties, not the barbershop.....

i agree with them changing their ego, but why should they change how they dress or what they drive? if they can afford it, which they definitely can, whyshouldn't they be able to drive what they want?

A damn shame at that. IDK why all of a sudden athletes are getting drilled at specifically.

Glad to hear hes OK.

I love how people like to blame the victim for being a victim. Have you see how Shelden dresses off the court? He's not even a platinum chains and watchesand bracelets type guy. He wears Sean John and drives a black Escallade like my sister's.

They probably tried to trade him for a Hot Wheels car, but then realized that he just looks ******ed...proceeded to jack his car.

On a serious note...damn.
