I guess you don't know anybody whose parents made too much money so they didn't qualify for grants but they didn't make enough to set aside minimum 7K a year without struggling? Financial aid solely looks at how much you make but doesn't account for expenses

Good for you. If there's a way for my children to avoid your situation I'm all for it. I'm not one of those people who think right after High School graduation all of a sudden a financial responsibility like this should be placed on a teenager. I'm not volunteering my children to struggle, sorry that's not life

college is advertised as "the best years of your life", but some times people have to sacrifice all the partying and pointless spending and suck it up for a few years in order to do whats best for their futures

one of my boys mantras was "I hate rich ****** god damn it". Dude came up from a nice middle class LI family, but it wasn't like they had long money, he had to make his own way. This kid had to push loud just to pay for books, clothes, and basic necessities. Didn't have a car had to hoof it or take the light rail to class.
But the dude loved his college experience. He understood a lot of folks had that mommy and daddy money but he did what he had to do to survive and hell he thrived.
Some other folks work through their college years, I know plenty of those types too.
A lot of sacrifice but generally everyone is happier for it.
Some weekends they had enough cash to eat steak and pop bottles, other weekends it was ramen noodles. **** it....
A lot didn't even have cars either.
Nobody is entitled to anything man. I'm all for helping out the disadvantaged but sometimes people who don't come from impoverished backgrounds need to struggle as well, it builds character.
Now the same dude just got accepted to NYU and has a great job. Dude is loving life and just bought a new whip. AND NOBODY HELPED HIM BUT HIM. PROUD OF MY *****.
