Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Just saw the finale of "the incredibly poor decisions of todd margaret"

WOW. that is some DARK !@!% for a comedy. man oh man loll

whole series is 12 eps. Definitely recommended. alot of hit or miss but it wraps up great. will arnett and david cross are excellent together.

I've spent pretty much the whole day watching the Godfather Saga (twice).. For those who don't know, it was a edit Coppola did for TV and he put the first two movies in chronological order with added/extended scenes. Pretty interesting this way, still prefer the originals.

And I'm reminded again, there might not be a more pathetic character in movie history than Fredo. At times I can empathize, but he's just the worst.

the first one might be the most "perfect" or "flawless" movie i've ever seen. I watched it again on thanksgiving because they always air it.

Spoke to known critic Jeffrey Lyons yesterday about Being Flynn, he said it's a touching film, and one of the best performances from De Niro in years. Also said Paul Dano was perfect of the role he played. I've been looking forward to it for a while, but it's a film that won't make a ton of noise.

Anyways, I watched another 3 great movies this past week or so. These ipad apps really make it so easy.

Lars and the Real Girl (ShowtimeAnytime) The creators tried so hard to cover up Kelli Garner but it's just not possible.

My Dinner with Andre (ditto)

Incendies (Starz on demand)

Really enjoy movies like My Dinner with Andre in which a single conversation encompasses much of the movie. I've seen this in a few other movies (Before Sunset, Before Sunrise, 12 Angry Men and Certified Copy). There has to be a lot more. Suggestions?
- The Sitter was dreadful
- Lars and the Real Girl was okay, very different, Gosling was solid, but the film was just meh.

I must be different. I watched all 3 Godfather movies around high school...and that's it. I can't watch em again. Maybe a few minutes here and there, but I don't have the patience for them. Goodfellas, Casino, sure...those...a Vito or Michael scene here and there and I'm out.

I watched The Muppets...I can completely understand why the puppeteers would say this is an insult to the Muppets.

This isn't a Muppet movie, it's a Jason Segel and Amy Adams singing and being cheery movie. They just happen to have talking puppets around them. And there are big random cameos for no reason every 5 seconds from whoever you could imagine. It's a shame. There's just nothing memorable, none of the songs are much good and almost nothing happens with or about any of the Muppets that's not easy or basic or simple or trite.

If you don't care either way and just wanna see them in a movie, it's fine, but the Winnie the Pooh movie is exactly what this kinda intent is supposed to make. I really didn't like The Muppets for all the things it wasn't. And completely understand why it became an afterthought after it came out. To be honest, it reminded me a lot of Speed Racer, except less people got to rag on this, because Segel isn't the Wachowskis and they didn't spend a ridiculous amount on it.

imo...The Muppets are our Doctor Who in a way and Segel managed to do not much of anything with them outside of what you might learn from having toys and that Weezer music video. What a shame.

6/10

But then on the flip, the documentary from last year, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey...really liked it. Not amazing or profound, but just a genuinely goodhearted documentary that gets me to care about The Muppets more than The Muppets, easily. And really has some great Jim Henson, Kermit Love and Frank Oz moments, that make you want to watch everything. 8/10

Agreed.  The Lost ending pretty much ruined the show for me, which until that point, I loved.  I have all 5 seasons of Lost on DVD, but haven't had an interest of watching any of it over again since the finale.  Don't feel that way about the Sopranos at all.  I actually liked the Sopranos ending.

Very twisted ending. Funny though. Kind of sad. But yeah, probably the darkest ending I've ever seen in a comedy.

Happy I'm not the only one on here who's been watching that show though

This. 100%

Even had it planned out to try and watch the whole show again after the last season. But like 2 or 3 episodes into season 6, you could tell...they're really really gonna $++% this up, aren't they?

Agreed. Sopranos ending definitely didn't ruin the entire series for me

I was pissed off for s while though. Still think it's kind of a practical joke.

Let's be real there are only two ways it could end Tony

My cable and internet was down for most of yesterday so I decided to watch a few episodes of Season 4 of Breaking Bad, ended up watching the last 8 episodes.

Season 4:

Best show on TV right now, hands down.

I loved the way they expounded on his character in season 4. You knew there was a dangerous man behind that calm exterior but the extent the show went through to show you how dangerous was mind blowing at times. The Hermanos episode which was more or less a Gus-centric episode was great. I like how they showed Gus "humble beginnings". Even though I accidentally spoiled myself as to what happened to Gus in the finale

I was looking forward to seeing how that actually played out because it seem far fetched when I initially read it, but I have no problems with how it played out.

Walter White.

They made him a sympathetic figure trapped in a dire situation all season, then they showed that Lily of the Valley flower in Walt's backyard in the final scene.

I'm hoping that was just a bait and switch. As desperate as he was I wouldn't think he'd take it to that level.

Season 5 can't come here soon enough.

I finally watched Moneyball last night. I'm a Pitt fan, and I must say, the movie was
30t6p3b.gif
. I knew the premise going in (I read the book), but I honestly saw no acting come from Pitt. Hell, even Jonah Hill.

The actors for the majority of the A's players did not match up even remotely close to their real life counterparts. And it dragged on for about 20-25 extra minutes than it needed to to finish.

Book > movie.

In hand: Citizen Kane

Going to try to watch tonight.

If not, def tomorrow.

Also, you guys are movie buffs, so I wanted to ask you guys for your top 2 or 3 "Ska, you HAVE to see this!" movies from last year that would be out on DVD now.

What a strange film that was. Certainly not one of my favorite Hitchcocks. I was trying to figure out who she looked like, and it finally hit me. Carrie Underwood.

There may not be even two or three "must see" movies of last year. I haven't seen The Artist yet, but it's not out, anyway.

I would start with The Descendants, but that's not out just yet, either (next Tuesday). I think you'll like it a lot.

I'd recommend Martha Marcy May Marlene, 13 Assassins (in Japanese), Hugo (Scorcese) and Margin Call. +The Descendants like Kev said
They're as different as can be, and at least one of them has to do it for you.

Last year was weird.
Barely 1 'everyone can agree this was great,' but plenty of 'this particular thing really did it for me' movies.
Hence why people say it was a bad year for movies.

Gotta see Hugo.. Not sure it's your thing ska, but I'd love to see what you thought. I know a couple other people in here loved it, and it was my favorite movie of last year without question. Like Kev, I still haven't seen The Artist so that may still change my opinion..

I woulda recommended The Artist, but I'm pretty sure it's still in theaters and Ska was looking for DVDs.

Once you get over the kinda douchey style and thinking it's overrated, it sneaks up on you and you get why people love it, beyond being a silent film. Not a nostalgia movie, but more a timeless Hollywood story? And it's kinda surprisingly dark and really bittersweet too.

Hugo...loved it. That is a pure nostalgia film. Had to find it in HD. Not the kiddie movie I expected and more of Ben Kingsley's film than the commercials let on.

Meh, not really a fan. It's a technical masterpiece but the narrative didn't do it for me. A little too long and contrived for my liking.
Casablanca on the other hand

Love everything about that film, especially the score. Moon River > As Time Goes By though.
