I know the media is trying to sell a story and is catering to the lowest common denominator, *cough* casual fan *cough* but are real Giant fans actually buying into this? This whole "Merry Band of Cast offs" Cinderella story.
Can anybody name the castoffs from the Giants?
Alright IronMan. Lets talk. Castoffs might be the wrong word, but it is truly incredibly that THIS team has gone so far. Yes. I know we have one of if not the best pitching staff in baseball. But people forget that we did last year as well....and that was good enough for a solid third place finish in the west. Lets take a look at our key contributers on the offensive side.
Torres - A 32 year old career minor leaguer (could argue that he is one of the players people talk about when mentioning "castoffs")
F. Sanchez - Solid major league player. (not really one people refer as a "castoff", but was a Pirate with zero playoff experience.)
Huff - A player that NO TEAM wanted in the offseason. (prime example of a "castoff")
Posey - A top prospect, but was a minor league player 1/3 the way into the season (not a "castoff")
Burrell - A player that was so bad with his old team, he was essentially given away. (prime example of a "castoff")
Ross - A player placed on waivers by old team (I understand there is more to this than just not wanting the player. I know there was a money issue and the Marlins werent going anywhere. But when you look at this situation on the simplest/most general viewpoint, he is definitely another "castoff")
Uribe - A player no team wanted pre2009. He was given a minor league deal with us, had a good 2009 season, and was brought back to the Giants for 2010....only after he explored free agency and saw there was no deal out there for him. (prime example of a "castoff")
People can choose to use the word "castoff" if they want. The simple fact of the matter is, this is an offensive team with ZERO superstars, which is filled with players that pretty much had no other options than to play with us. Huff, Burrell, Ross and Uribe are definitely in the category of the players you are asking about. Ross, obviously, was a lucky waiver claim that worked out, but he still qualifies as a player his former team essentially gave away.
Im not saying castoff is definitely the correct word, but aside from Posey, you can look at our lineup and realize that almost every one of these players was either A) not wanted by former teams, B) have zero playoff experience, or C) has far exceeded expectations....in some cases two or three of those apply.
