NEW YORK (WABC) -- A Soho store cancelled the sale of a new Nike sneaker out of concern for public safety, after hundreds of people lined up outside the store Wednesday night.

So many people showed up to wait in line that at around 7:30pm, the police shut the street down and dispersed the crowd.

Then the store, Supreme New York, released a statement, saying "Due to concern for public safety, NYPD has forced us to not sell the Supreme/Nike Foamposites and accompanying clothing in our New York store.

Supreme New York, located at 274 Lafayette Street, teamed with Nike on a new Nike Air Foamposite 1.

The sneaker was to have gone on sale tomorrow only in New York City, Los Angeles, London and online.

The store in SoHo was the only place on the East Coast where the sneaker can be purchased in store.

The price tag is $250. The sneakers will still be available at 11 a.m. Thursday on the store's web site, http://www.supremenewyork.com
