No contact between Niners, Crabtree
Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2009 6:26 PM ET

As the contract impasse between the San Francisco 49ers and the tenth overall pick in the 2009 draft approaches September 1, a league source tells us that there has been "no contact" between the Niners and Eugene Parker, the agent for receiver Michael Crabtree.

It's widely believed that Crabtree wants to secure more money in the tenth slot than receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey finagled from the Raiders as the seventh overall pick.

It's also widely believed that the 49ers won't pay Crabtree a dime more than the Packers gave to defensive lineman B.J. Raji at the ninth overall slot.

Meanwhile, we're hearing that Parker is dealing with the Crabtree conundrum on the recruiting trail by blaming the holdout on the player. Parker, we're told, is pointing to the deal he negotiated for defensive end Tyson Jackson at the third overall slot as proof that Parker is willing and able to negotiate a fair deal for a first-round pick.

We continue to think that the two sides will come together not long before the regular season begins. But we also think that Crabtree won't have the kind of impact he could have had as a rookie, if he'd merely taken a slotted deal and gotten into camp.

And we recognize the possibility that Crabtree thinks enough of his skills (after all, he said he can run a 4.4 with crutches) that he could re-enter the draft and be picked even higher next year.

We're still kind of rooting for that, primarily since Peter King has vowed to change his name to Derek Jeter if Crabtree goes into the 2010 draft pool.

i guess even parker has had enough of this.
$!%$ this dude crabtree. IF he ever signs, i wonder what he's gonna do to save face?

You know it's bad when even the agent starts dumping on him.

Yeah, Raji would have been a beast in the middle - but once he got snatched up I still wanted to go defense.

Seeing how our pass rush is still suspect as hell, having Orakpo opposite of J. Smith would have been nice.

Look at this beast

i much rather have raji. orakpo's pure strength and speed won't translate if he doesn't have the skills (vernon davis)

Yeah Orakpo could be another workout warrior - but we're talking about a player that was still there at 10 for the 9ers to draft.

Raji was already taken by the Packers, what was our biggest weakness that wasn't addressed during the draft? ... The pass rush.

Although our WR corp isn't the most talented, we could have done without Crabby.

....but im not the coach ...so whatever it takes to win games i guess ....49ers most def. gonna need draft/trade for a QB tho

I know Hill can't throw the long ball but we'll just have to deal with that. I'm not as big as a fan of Hill as some other Niner fans I know, but we'll see how he handles the pressure now since he is being given the job from the beginning of the year. Neither one played better during the preseason but Hill has done more as a starter than Smith has. But I'm 100% with you that we need to draft/trade for a QB in the future.

Cosign I'm fine with Hill being the guy I just hope at some point of the season when he struggles Alex does the best job he can. whether or not that makesin the starters who knows and I could care less. I would have thought the gap between the two would have been bigger by now.

Who's got tickets for the home opener? I'm trying to come up on some tickets right now, but I don't feel like dropping a bill on some decent seats.

You guys think tickets prices will drop at all as the game nears?
49ERS

Smith tells Niners he's done

Backup OT has been afflicted with back pain, not with team in Dallas
ARLINGTON, Texas - The quarterback position is settled, but other competitions for 49ers starting jobs will heat up this evening at the new Cowboys Stadium.

Quarterback Shaun Hill, who took a light workload on Wednesday due to a low-back strain, will start the game, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. His job is not in doubt, as he was named the regular-season starter earlier in the week.

But there is newfound uncertainty at the 49ers' offensive tackle positions, where the club is preparing to lose veteran Marvel Smith, a free-agent addition in the offseason. Smith, a nine-year veteran, was penciled in as the backup at both tackle positions.

However, Smith has informed the 49ers he plans to retire after experiencing pain and discomfort in his back, according to sources. The 49ers announced Smith did not accompany the team on the flight to Texas, but declined to disclose the reason.

"It's personal reasons," Singletary told reporters following the team's practice Friday. "We're going to give him the time just like the other guys, and take care of what you need to take care of and we'll go from there."

When asked if the club would comment on The Press Democrat's midday report that Smith was "likely to retire," a 49ers spokesman said, "No."

The 49ers are holding out hope Smith will reconsider his decision and still be able to fill a role as a backup at both offensive tackle positions, a team source said.

Presumptive starting right tackle Adam Snyder has already been ruled out of action for the game with a right knee sprain, which he sustained late in the first half of the 49ers' exhibition game last Saturday against the Raiders.

The 49ers do not have much depth at the tackle positions. Barry Sims, who started eight games at right tackle last season, will start against the Cowboys. Joe Staley will start at left tackle. Sims, Jacob Bender and undrafted rookie Alex Boone are the others who saw action at the tackle spots last week.

Adding depth at right tackle was one of the organization's priorities in the offseason.

Smith, 31, was considered a risk when the 49ers signed him as a free agent. He played in just 17 games the past two seasons, finishing both years on injured reserve with back problems.

The 49ers were believed to have their sights set on adding a potential starting right tackle in the draft. However, when receiver Michael Crabtree was available with the No. 10 overall pick, the 49ers selected him over Mississippi tackle Michael Oher.

Crabtree remains one of two unsigned draft picks, as the clubs are believed to be some $7 million apart in guaranteed money, with an approximate $18 million gap in money over the life of a five-year contract.

Other positions up for grabs are:

Right cornerback - The main competition is between veteran Dré Bly, who has played impressively through two games, and third-year player Tarell Brown, who missed the first two games with a toe sprain. But Shawntae Spencer has emerged as a candidate, too, with solid play during training camp.

Third wideout - The starters, Isaac Bruce and Josh Morgan, appear set. But there is still a logjam of receivers battling for playing time. Micheal Spurlock has been entering as the third receiver, but Arnaz Battle and Jason Hill are also in the competition for the spot as the team's slot receiver.

Brandon Jones, who looked to have a grasp on that spot, is out through September with a broken shoulder.

honestly it was a gamble to bring him on board, and now we're gonna face the risks of picking him up. we dont have much depth at the OT spot.
QB Davis' skillset present dilemma
John Crumpacker, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, August 29, 2009
(08-29) 04:00 PDT Arlington, Tex. -- Now that the 49ers have gotten the mundane business of naming a starting quarterback out of the way, they can focus on the much more compelling issue of who will wear a cap and carry a clipboard as the team's third QB.

Much more compelling to Damon Huard and Nate Davis, that is.

While coach Mike Singletary announced on Monday that Shaun Hill will be the starter for 2009, he has not yet designated a No. 3.

Huard, the been-there, done-that veteran in his 13th NFL season, and Davis, the rookie from Ball State, are on the depth chart behind Hill and No. 2 Alex Smith.

Hill will start tonight against the Cowboys and play at least the first quarter, while other starters on offense and defense figure to play the entire first half. Singletary did not announce a quarterback rotation beyond Hill.

Smith is out of the game with a sprained right thumb, meaning Huard and Davis will see significant playing time at the Cowboys' billion-dollar facility. It's not called the Dallas Palace or the Palace in Dallas, but there's no good reason why it should not.

Davis played the entire second half against the Raiders a week ago and completed 6 of 11 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Huard played in the first exhibition game against Denver and hit on 7 of 9 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

"I would like to be No. 3," Davis said. "I just want to do what's best for the team. If that's practice squad, that's what I'll do to help the team."

Davis might be the most intriguing rookie quarterback prospect the 49ers have ever had, given his background and physical skills. He has a dyslexia-like learning disability that makes it difficult for him to read and comprehend, a fact that was known going into the draft but did not stop the 49ers from picking him on the fifth round.

The fingers of one hand could be used to count the number of dyslexic quarterbacks in the NFL, with enough digits left to give someone a knuckle sandwich.

Davis reiterated that when it comes to football, he does not have a learning disability - as long as the material is in visual form instead of words. His playbook is full of diagrammed plays, which makes it easier for him to learn coordinator Jimmy Raye's offense.

"The biggest thing is staying with it, not getting frustrated," Davis said. "They give me pictures instead of words. You give me words, it's going to take me longer to understand. But if you give me pictures, it's easier to understand."

It takes about one pass for an observer to understand that Davis' right arm is a gift he was born with. With a flick of his right wrist, passes zip to receivers, getting from point A to point B at a velocity Hill, Smith and Huard could only dream of achieving.

"He does have a rifle arm," Huard said in admiration.

There's more to the Davis lore than just his fastball. At Ball State, Davis was famous for not using the laces to grip the ball. With his strong, meaty hands, he simply gripped the ball however it arrived on the center snap in shotgun formation and let it fly.

Fair weather or foul, he always wore gloves as well.

It's a shame Davis did not go to Oregon, because he's one odd Duck at a position that usually demands conformity.

"He does some throws with the laces, some without. Sometimes he has gloves, sometimes not," Huard said. "He's the new generation."

The easy thing would be to name Huard the No. 3 based on his experience and put Davis on the practice squad. The problem with that, however, is that on the practice squad Davis would be ripe for the picking for any team desiring him for its active roster.

It's not unheard of for a team to keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but that would leave the 49ers short at another position. If Davis is named No. 3 at the expense of Huard, he would give the team no NFL experience should something happen to Hill and Smith.

In the NFL, something happens with right regularity.

"Learning from those three, they're all veterans. They all give me so much help," Davis said. "They're just team players. It's coming along. I keep working, studying my playbook and keep building my confidence."

Veteran may retire: Tackle Marvel Smith, who did not make the trip to Dallas for "personal reasons," is reportedly contemplating retiring. He had offseason back surgery and was limited to a single practice during two-a-days. The 31-year-old from Oakland's Skyline High won two Super Bowl rings in nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barry Sims will start at right tackle tonight.

No meeting of minds: Despite Dallas being Michael Crabtree's hometown, general manager Scot McCloughan does not plan to meet with his No. 1 draft pick's representatives on this trip.
