What you neglect to mention is that those sources of power are becoming obsolete, especially when you consider that:
- carbon-based energy sources are very inefficient, and we currently have access to less wasteful sources of power.
- storage technology (the biggest solution to the issue of unpredictability of renewables) is becoming cheaper and more accessible, thanks to companies like Tesla (which is why he can offer an electric vehicle for 30k and electricity storage solutions for residential buildings)
- the combination of storage technology and renewables give people the possibility of controlling their energy costs, not rely so mich on the grid, and to make money off of it if they are connected to it.
What is U.S. electricity generation by energy source?
In 2015, the United States generated about 4 trillion kilowatthours of electricity.1 About 67% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and petroleum).
Major energy sources and percent share of total U.S. electricity generation in 2015:1
Coal = 33%
Natural gas = 33%
Nuclear = 20%
Hydropower = 6%
Other renewables = 7%
Biomass = 1.6%
Geothermal = 0.4%
Solar = 0.6%
Wind = 4.7%
Petroleum = 1%
Other gases =
